For used Kia Ceed cars, choose Arnold Clark

Originally launched in 2007 as the Kia Cee’d, this family hatchback was created by the South Korean marque specifically for the European market. The model saw heavy revisions in its second generation – which landed in 2012 – making it a strong competitor for established family vehicles such as the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Mazda 3. Later the same year a Cee’d SW (estate) arrived, appealing to those in need of more space, then in April 2014 came the Cee’d GT with its high-performance 201bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

Kia Ceed updates and facelifts

After a facelift in 2015, Kia released the Mk3 Ceed in August 2018, dropping the apostrophe from the name in the process. Available as a five-door hatchback and Sportswagon estate, it offered a choice of two petrol engines or a diesel. In January 2019, the sleek ProCeed 5-door shooting brake and Ceed GT joined the line-up, with a plug-in hybrid variant following in March 2020. The PHEV was short-lived, however, being discontinued when the Mk3 Ceed received a facelift and mild-hybrid technology in 2021. It was this third-generation model that scooped up a plethora of coveted awards, including the 2019 Red Dot Award for design and the What Car? award for ‘Best Family Car for less than £20,000’.

From 2021, the Ceed offered engine choices including 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre petrol units, the latter boasting mild-hybrid technology, and a 1.6-litre diesel option. The Mk3 comes in a selection of trims, including the 2, 3, GT-Line and GT-Line S, although special editions such as Blue Edition and First Edition have graced the roads too.

Practicality and style of the car

If affordable practicality is high on your priority list, you won’t go far wrong with the Kia Ceed. There’s an impressive level of cabin space, with enough head and legroom to seat five adults; even a passenger in the middle rear seat won’t find their foot room too compromised by the centre transmission tunnel. Being a family car, the Ceed has ISOFIX anchor points in the rear seats too, for easy transportation of little ones.

There are also an array of cubbies and pockets to help keep the cabin clutter-free. Mk3 models have a slightly lower-slung driving position, delivering a sportier feel to the ride.

The Kia Ceed’s interior space is matched by a generous boot. Mk2 hatchbacks offer 380 litres, which extends to 1,318 litres with the rear seats folded. Choose a Mk3 edition and there’s an even more capacious 395-litres available, more than a Ford Focus or Volkswagen Golf. With the rear seats down, you get slightly less space than the Mk2, with 1,291 litres at your disposal. If that’s not enough for your needs, the petrol Ceed SW provides the most boot space, with 625 to 1,694 litres.

The Kia Ceed may not strike you as a tow car, but the 1.5-litre petrol variant is capable enough, being able to haul up to 1,410kg (braked). If you want a greener option, the PHEV can tow a maximum braked weight of 1,300kg.

Running costs

Not only is the Ceed affordable to buy but it also has competitive running costs. Mk2 hatchbacks sit in insurance groups 7-15 out of 50, while most of the Sportswagons are in group 11-15. Both the current generation hatchback and Sportswagon occupy groups 8-16. You’re looking at slightly higher premiums if you choose the sporty Ceed GT, which sits in group 22. As for road tax, it largely depends on the year and engine. Some pre-2017 hatchbacks are exempt from VED altogether, while others incur an annual rate of £200. Opt for a Mk3 Ceed (hatchback or Sportswagon) and you’ll pay the standard rate of £180 per year.

How a used Kia Ceed drives

There’s no shortage of engine choices for the Kia Ceed. The Mk2 (2012-2018) comes with a choice of 1.4-litre or 1.6-litre petrol or diesel units with six-speed manual transmission as standard, or the option of an automatic gearbox for the higher powered engines. Those looking for more oomph can select the Ceed GT, whose turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine produces 201bhp.

Choose a Mk3 (from August 2018 onwards) and the choice shifts to 1.0-litre and 1.4-litre petrol units, with the former delivering 118bhp and up to 55.4mpg, and the latter returning 136bhp and up to 50.4mpg. Those with a preference for diesel can select the 1.6-litre CRDi with outputs of 114bhp or 134bhp. These achieve a highly impressive combined fuel economy of 74.3mpg and 67.3mpg respectively and can take you from 0-62mph in as little as 9.6 seconds.

The Ceed GT retained the same engine as the Mk2 iteration, while a plug-in hybrid version of the Ceed SW was introduced in 2020, offering a combined output of 140bhp and emissions levels of 33g/km. This was discontinued in 2021, however, when the facelifted Ceed arrived with mild-hybrid (MHEV) technology for 1.6-litre CRDi cars.

Kia Ceed models from July 2021 have the option of a 1.5-litre T-GDi petrol engine producing 156bhp in place of the 1.4-litre unit. This propels the hatchback from 0-62mph in just 8.1 seconds when paired with the manual gearbox, or 8.3 seconds when mated to dual-clutch automatic transmission on the top-spec GT-Line S.

Features you can expect in a Kia Ceed

The Kia Ceed hatchback and Sportswagon models are family cars, so it’s no surprise that they can seat five adults comfortably. Wide-opening doors allow easy access to the rear too, which is especially helpful for strapping infants into a child seat.

Interior

With Kia, affordability doesn’t mean a sacrifice in quality. The fit and finish of the cabin is completed to a high standard, and the modern dash layout ensures information is clearly displayed. Ergonomic seats provide comfort and support on even the longest journeys, and the driver benefits from a multi-function steering wheel, providing safe and intuitive operation of audio and cruise control functions.

Technology

Mk3 Ceeds come with an 8 or 10.25-inch touchscreen depending on the trim you choose. This provides access to a DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, meaning you can stream audio content and use compatible smartphone apps on the go. A reversing-camera is also standard, assisting with parking and manoeuvring. Step up to the 3 trim to add navigation with European maps.

Safety

At its test in 2019, the Kia Ceed scored a four-star rating from Euro NCAP. Adult and child occupant protection sit at 88% and 85% respectively, which is higher than the scores for the Vauxhall Astra. Standard safety equipment includes multiple front and side airbags, Lane Keeping Assist, Driver Attention Warning – which prompts you to take a break when it detects signs of fatigue – and High Beam Assist, which provides better nighttime visibility without dazzling oncoming drivers. The Ceed also has Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist to help reduce the chance of an impact.

Other useful tech includes cruise control, which comes as standard on models from 2019 onwards, and Hill Start Assist Control, which prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards when you pull away on an incline. Higher trims include an auto-dimming rearview mirror to keep you from being dazzled by the headlights of the car behind.

The Kia Ceed offers four key trim levels, each with a generous amount of equipment. The Ceed GT has a unique spec, which includes sporty accents and advanced tech features. Choose from the following:
