Black MINI Countryman from the front

The MINI Countryman is a compact, family-friendly SUV that’s to fun drive and boasts a spacious interior. One of the larger models produced by MINI, a used MINI Countryman is perfect for adventurous families as its interior provides great comfort to passengers on long journeys and the good handling of the vehicle makes it a pleasure to drive.

Available in petrol, diesel or hybrid engines, the Countryman’s engines all deliver quick acceleration that rivals its closest competitors like the Nissan Qashqai or Peugeot 2008.

MINI Countryman updates and facelifts

Launched in 2010, the MINI Countryman was the first venture by MINI into the SUV market and it sold well. Keeping the iconic fun, sporty and appealing design of the smaller MINI hatchback and convertible models, a used MINI Countryman captures the charm of a MINI and adds more space plus four-wheel drive options to enhance the driving experience for families in particular. And with successive generations tweaking different aspects of the Countryman to keep it fresh and relevant, it remains an attractive and high-performing SUV, well-suited to families and comfortable journeys.

Practicality and style of the car

When MINI launched the Countryman, they did so with families and practicality in mind. As a result, you’ll find a spacious interior that can seat tall adults in the rear seats.

The boot space of the MINI Countryman is also not limited by its compact size. A used MINI Countryman offers 450 litres of boot space, which can quickly be enlarged to 1,390-litres by folding the rear seats down. The space that the MINI Countryman offers is perfect for holding the luggage of a small family, plus more if needed, and it is larger than that offered by the Volkswagen Golf.

Inside MINI Countryman's boot

While the hybrid version has a slightly smaller boot space as a result of the technology required for the hybrid engine, it still has a sizable capacity of 405 litres.

The MINI Countryman can tow between 1,500 to 1,800kg. While this is a modest range it still provides you with plenty of options to tow a trailer or compact caravan.

Running costs

A used MINI Countryman will sit in insurance groups from 15 to 38, depending on trim. Hybrid and Exclusive trims sit higher up in this range, for example. Road tax for a used MINI Countryman is around £180.

How a used MINI Countryman drives

Close up of MINI Countryman's start/stop button

A used MINI Countryman can come with petrol, diesel or hybrid engines. Both petrol and diesel engines are available in either manual or automatic transmission. Despite being larger than MINI’s original hatchback and convertible models, the MINI Countryman has retained the agility, speed and handling that MINI is renowned for.

An entry-level MINI Countryman has a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that is capable of 136bhp and returns between 47.9 and 51.4mpg. Larger 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engines are available in other trims and are capable of a greater 176bhp, with some reaching an impressive 302bhp while returning between 43.5 and 45.6mpg. The 2.0-litre diesel engines are found on older generations and are capable of producing 148bhp.

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) uses a combination of a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor to produce 217bhp and 220Nm of torque. When driving on all-electric, it is capable of 87bhp and reaches up to 78mph. Used MINI Countryman hybrid engines are capable of returning between 156.9–166.2mpg, meaning you go further with the same amount of petrol than non-hybrid options, perfect for those going about town frequently.
