For used Renault Twingo cars, choose Arnold Clark

The Renault Twingo made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 1992. Taking its name from the words ‘twist’ ‘swing’ and ‘tango’, it is a nippy city car that’s fun and practical in urban environments. However, the first-generation model was never launched in the UK, the Twingo only launched in 2007 as a second-generation model in the UK.

It faced strong competition in a crowded sector, rivalling vehicles such as the Volkswagen up!, SEAT Mii, Škoda Citigo, Peugeot 108 and Toyota Aygo. When Renault released the Mk3 in 2014, they gave it a distinctive new aesthetic and a rear-mounted engine, which allowed for impressive practicality. A range of engine options were available, as well as a choice of four trim levels: Expression, Play, Dynamique and Dynamique S.

Renault Twingo updates and facelifts

This third-generation edition quickly found favour with critics and received several awards. These included ‘City Car of the Year’ at the UK Car of the Year Awards in 2014 and Top Gear’s 2014 ‘City Car of the Year’ title. The following year it won Fleet World’s 2015 ‘Design of the Year’ thanks to its striking looks and innovative use of space.

A changing market with more demand for SUVs spelt the end of the Renault Twingo’s production run. The last models were produced in 2019. This model is nevertheless an excellent city car with plenty to offer new drivers and those looking for an urban runaround.

In 2015, the Twingo was available for the first time with an automatic gearbox. There was also an Iconic special edition launched, which returned in 2017. From 2016–2018, a GT variant arrived, offering enhanced performance and a sporty design. In 2018 Renault revised the trim lineup, replacing its original trims with the Play and Iconic trims.

Practicality and style of the car

Choose a Mk2 Renault Twingo manufactured between 2007 and 2014 and you’ll have 188 litres of boot space at your disposal. There’s no boot lip, making the loading of heavier items easy. The rear seats can also be locked into an upright position to deliver 219 litres of space – more than the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108.

Opt for the Mk3 Twingo produced between 2014 and 2019 and you’ll benefit from 220 litres of luggage capacity. That’s plenty to carry shopping or a carry-on suitcase. Fold down the rear bench, however, and you’ll get a flat 980-litre load area, which can accommodate a couple of larger suitcases.

Running costs

The Twingo makes an excellent car for first-time buyers and those looking for a second car. That’s thanks in part to its low running costs. It falls into insurance groups 2–11 out of 50, meaning premiums are among the lowest possible.

Road tax costs depend on the model year you select. Those manufactured before April 2017 can largely be taxed at £20–35 per year, while some are exempt completely from road tax. Those produced after April 2017 are taxed at the annual standard rate of £180.

How a used Renault Twingo drives

When the Mk3 Renault Twingo was launched, it came with a choice of two petrol engines. The first is a 1.0-litre petrol unit with an output of 69bhp. This accelerates from 0-62mph in 14.5 seconds and can return a combined fuel economy of between 51.4 and 67.3mpg.

The more powerful option is the 0.9-litre turbocharged petrol, which offers 89bhp. This can take you from 0-62mph in just 10.8 seconds and returns between 57.6 and 65.7mpg on the combined cycle.

The GT variant is equipped with the 0.9-litre petrol engine and 109bhp. That’s enough to reduce the Twingo’s 0-62mph time to just 9.6 seconds. There’s little compromise on efficiency, however, with combined fuel economy reaching 54.3mpg.

Until 2015, all Twingo variants came with a manual gearbox. Thereafter, the 89bhp unit could be chosen with automatic transmission.

Features you can expect in a Renault Twingo

Interior

One of the strengths of the Renault Twingo is its rear-engine layout. This translates into generous space for both the front and rear occupants. There’s ample head and legroom for four adults, and a small adult or teen can even fit in the middle rear seat on shorter journeys. There’s also a host of storage cubbies positioned around the cabin. In addition to a 6.5-litre glovebox, there are large door pockets and two cup holders placed under the dash. There’s even a single cup holder for rear occupants.

Renault offered a wide range of personalisation options for the Twingo. As such, buyers of new models could choose from an array of retro decals, brightly coloured trims and dashboard Fascias. Those looking for a used Renault Twingo can therefore find something to suit their tastes, as well as their space and performance needs.

On its user-friendly dash, the Twingo is equipped with a universal smartphone mount. This comes with a dedicated USB connection and power supply, enabling you to use maps, music and other apps on the go. You can even download Renault’s R&Go app to access free navigation and multimedia controls. A DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity also come as standard. Some used Twingos may come with the Techno Pack, which was an option on new vehicles. This adds the R-Link infotainment system with a 7-inch- touchscreen, Android Auto compatibility and a reversing camera.

Technology

The Renault Twingo may be compact, but it’s packed with technology to enhance every drive. LED daytime running lights are a standard feature, helping to improve visibility. Every trim also comes with electric and heated door mirrors. For your convenience there’s hill start assist, which holds brake pressure when pulling away on an incline, preventing the car from rolling backwards.

Further up the range you’ll benefit from extras such as manual air conditioning, cruise control and stop/start technology. This feature cuts the engine when you’re waiting at the lights or stuck in traffic, reducing emissions and conserving fuel. Top-spec GT trims include parking sensors to help make manoeuvring easier.

Safety

The Renault Twingo was tested by safety experts Euro NCAP in 2014 and received a four-star rating. With scores of 78% and 81% for adult and child occupant protection, it comfortably matches the Toyota Aygo in both categories (82% and 63% respectively) and is slightly safer for child occupants than the Peugeot 108’s 80%. The Twingo has a pair of ISOFIX anchor points on the outer rear seats for easier installation of car seats. Selected used models may feature the Seats Pack, which adds an ISOFIX mounting point to the front seat.

All Twingo variants come with four airbags, anti-lock brakes and stability control as standard, as well as a system that monitors tyre pressure and alerts you if it gets low. All trims have a speed limiter too. For added protection, choose the top-spec Dynamique S grade, which has a lane departure warning system. This uses an alert to prevent you from inadvertently straying from your lane while driving.
