White Seat Leon from the front

One of SEAT’s most successful compact family cars in the UK, the SEAT Leon launched in 1999 to offer drivers a sophisticated, dynamic car that is well suited to family needs. Spacious and well-equipped with a range of convenient technology, a used SEAT Leon is a comfortable and enjoyable ride for everyone onboard, making it suitable for both long and short journeys and family trips away.

SEAT Leon updates and facelifts

White Seat Leon from the side

There is plenty of choice if you’re looking for a used SEAT Leon. Available in petrol, diesel and hybrid engines, as well as 3-door and 5-door versions, and a hatchback or estate model. The model competes well with other compact family cars such as the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Audi A3, and scooped the accolade for Best Family Car of the Year at the What Car? Awards in 2022.

With decent running costs and a large and practical boot space, the SEAT Leon is an attractive choice. The Mk4 SEAT Leon was released in 2020, but no matter the model the Leon offers good levels of handling and driving performance. The SEAT Leon has plenty of safety features that have earned it high scores from Euro NCAP, as well as other convenient technology inside the cabin making it a practical and safe car to drive.

Practicality and style of the car

Owners of a used SEAT Leon, whether the estate or hatchback version, will find it has plenty of boot space, which makes it perfect for packing family suitcases when going on holiday. The Leon Estate has an impressive capacity of 620 litres, this is greater than the 608-litre boot offered on the Ford Focus Estate. The boot can be expanded to a vast 1,620 litres with the rear seats down.

The boot space is slightly reduced with a hybrid engine to 470 litres and 1,470 litres but this is still a large and practical space and greater than one of the Leon’s main rivals, the Volkswagen Golf.

The Hatchback has a capacity of 380 litres which, when the back seats are folded down, expands to 1,210 litres. This is the same size as the Audi A3 which also offers 380 litres and is five litres larger than the Ford Focus.

A SEAT Leon has a maximum braked towing capacity between 1,500kg and 1,800kg depending on the fuel type of the vehicle. The 2.0-litre TDI and the 20.0-litre TSI engines are capable of towing 1,800kg, whereas the 1.5-litre TSI and the hybrid engine can tow 1,700kg. The 1.0-litre TSI can tow 1,500kg. Most engines enable drivers to tow most small caravans and trailers with confidence and control.

Running costs

The cost of running a SEAT Leon is relatively low compared to other family cars. A used SEAT Leon falls into insurance groups 12 to 36 and with road tax costing between £170 to £180 a year. This makes a SEAT Leon cheaper to run than rivals such as the Volkswagen Golf or the Ford Focus, which fall into higher insurance groups.

Used SEAT Leons come with a variety of engines, with petrol, diesel and hybrid options all available, as well as manual and automatic transmission – exact combinations available will vary by age and trim.

Petrol engines available for a SEAT Leon include a 1.0-litre TSi, with an output of 108bhp, which can achieve up to 51.4-52.3mpg, and a 1.5-litre 128bhp TSi, which achieves 52.3mpg. The most powerful petrol engine is the 2.0-litre TSi, which puts down 187bhp while still delivering a decent fuel economy of 42.2mpg.

Mild and plug-in hybrid engines are also available. The plug-in e-Hybrid Leon uses a 1.4-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and can put down a combined 201bhp with 350Nm of torque. When fully charged it can achieve up to 235.4mpg. There are also two mild hybrid engines available, which feature a petrol engine assisted by a 48-volt electric starter-generator to reduce fuel consumption and environmental impact compared to a petrol-only powertrain. The SEAT Leon has a 1.0-litre and a 1.5-litre eTSi mild hybrid. The 1.0-litre has an output of 108bhp and fuel economy of 51.4mpg, while the 1.5-litre has an output of 147bhp and achieves up to 49.6mpg.

Diesel engines available include the 2.0-litre TDI and the 1.6-litre, with both available in manual and automatic transmission. These engines have a higher fuel economy ranging between 62.8mpg and 67.3mpg and can put down around 113bhp. These engines are a good choice for frequent motorway travel due to their higher fuel efficiency.

Features you can expect in a SEAT Leon

Seat Leon interior rear seats

Available in either a 3-door or 5-door model, the SEAT Leon offers passengers plenty of space and comfort on long journeys. The SEAT Leon is one of only a few cars in its class that offers genuine comfort for five adults because it’s longer than other compact family cars – for example, 800 to 400mm longer than the Volkswagen Golf – extending passenger space. It has two ISOFIX mounting points in the rear to fit two car seats if needed. SEAT Leons from 2020 onwards provide the most legroom and headroom for passengers. This is because in 2020 SEAT decide to extend the length of the Leon by between 132 to 318mm, in comparison to the previous iteration.

The Leon’s exterior design is sleek and smart, with sloping roofline and deep bonnet contouring. By adapting the classic small car design, SEAT gave the Leon a distinctive style that rivals popular options like the Volkswagen Golf for style and sophistication.

Interior

Inside, the Leon offers drivers a quality cabin with a range of technology on offer. Depending on trim, the dashboard can feature a central, vibrant 10-inch infotainment touchscreen for music, navigation and hands-free calling. The SEAT Digital Cockpit instrument cluster displays important information, such as speed and fuel levels to help ensure you are informed and in control on every drive.

Furnished with quality soft-touch plastics, the cabin also features plenty of storage spaces to securely keep items within easy reach. In the front, a glovebox, cup-holders and space under the central armrest all provide convenient storage for the driver, with all doors having deep door bins for water bottles and other everyday items.

Technology

As you climb up the trim levels you can also find additional features available such as LED headlights, all-round parking sensors, triple-zone climate control, and a satellite navigation system. Used SEAT Leons can also come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. With options to also include USB type-C charging ports for front and rear passengers, it’s easy to connect and charge your smartphone while on long journeys. Some higher trim levels, including the FR trim and above, also offer a wireless smartphone charging tray to declutter the cabin from wires while charging your phone.

The SEAT Leon delivers a sporty, fun drive. Good handling and responsive brakes help on the road, while the tight turning circle makes parking in tight spaces easier. Engine and road noise is hushed in the cabin providing a pleasurable driving experience for both the driver and passengers.

Safety

The SEAT Leon scored a full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test, with a 92% score for adult occupant protection and 88% for child occupant protection, reinforcing its reputation as a safe compact family car. Depending on age and trim, you’ll find comprehensive safety features such as Predictive Adaptative Cruise Control, which uses the sensors around the exterior and other information to control the speed of the car when activated, traffic sign recognition, real-time traffic information and blind spot detection. The suite of safety features on a SEAT Leon makes it a reassuring compact car that is suitable for both city and long-distance driving.
