For used Toyota Verso cars, choose Arnold Clark

The Toyota Verso was designed with families in mind. It has a good-sized boot and spacious interior; it is ideal for the everyday demands of family life. Launched in 2009 at the Geneva Motor Show, the Verso was introduced to the market with the intention of providing a reliable and practical family MPV.

The Toyota Verso has proven a popular choice, with a reputation for reliability and good build quality. It competes against other MPVs on the market, such as; the Ford S-Max, the Ford Galaxy, the Renault Grand Scenic, the Volkswagen Sharan and the Mazda 5. The Verso is an attractive alternative to its rivals, as a well-designed and practical seven-seater MPV.

Toyota Verso updates and facelifts

Toyota gave the Verso a facelift in 2013, updating the interior and exterior with some modern technology. The exterior received a new bumper design and body shape that made it look more attractive. Inside, a 6.1-inch infotainment system was installed with an integrated sat nav. Toyota also revised the engine range. Offering a range of high performing diesel and petrol engines. The suspension set-up on the Verso was also improved, providing a smoother ride when on rough roads.

Toyota halted production of the Verso in 2018, after the growth in popularity of SUVs over MPVs.

Practicality and style of the car

The Toyota Verso has a 178-litre boot with all seven seats up. With the third row of seats folded neatly down in the rear, it reveals a 440-litre boot. When all the rear seats are folded down, a large 1,696-litre boot space is revealed, which is perfect for transporting bulky items and storage boxes. This offers more space than the Mazda 5’s 1,566 litres.

The boot space can be easily adapted to fit different needs. The rear seats fold flat into the floor, creating a flat loading bay. There is also no lip on the boot, making heavy items easier to load. There is an out-of-the-way storage area under the floor of the boot. This can be used to store the parcel shelf when not in use or to store other personal belongings out of view.

The seats on the middle row can also be individually slid forwards or backwards. This increases the boot size slightly or frees up some more legroom.

The Toyota Verso can tow up to 1,300kg with either a diesel or petrol engine. This is enough to enable drivers to tow a medium sized trailer or small caravan.

Running costs

Part of the Toyota Verso’s appeal is its reasonable running costs. Falling into insurance groups 10 to 19, the Verso sits in a lower insurance group than most of its competitors. The Volkswagen Sharan, for example, falls into insurance groups 15 to 25, and the Ford S-Max falls into groups 16 to 34.

Road tax on the Verso varies between £35 to £320 depending on the trim and engine type of your selected model.

Features you can expect in a Toyota Verso

Interior

The cabin of the Toyota Verso is spacious and can comfortably fit up to seven passengers. It provides a good amount of legroom and headroom, while also accommoding their accompanying luggage.

The Toyota Verso is well built. It’s durable interior can withstand countless knocks and bumps from suitcases or young passengers. Good-quality materials such as soft-touch plastics on the dashboard and metallic highlights around the buttons and dials give the car a stylish look and feel. The revised suspension set up helps to make journeys smooth for all on board. Equally, wind, road and engine noise are kept to a minimum thanks to the aerodynamic design of the car’s body.

There are plenty of storage spaces to help keep the Verso clutter-free. In the front there are two gloveboxes and a cupholder. In the rear, the middle row passengers get access to a pair of fold down table trays on the rear of the front seats and map pockets for extra storage. There are also storage bins located in the floor of middle row for extra storage. Door bins are decently sized, providing space to store personal items or a water bottle. The third row of seats have two large cup holders that will fit large water bottles.

On the entry-level Active trim, a CD player and radio set up features on the dashboard. This set-up has AUX and USB smartphone connectivity. Both systems can be controlled via the buttons located on the steering wheel, helping the driver to keep their eyes on the road.

On the Icon trim and higher, drivers will find a 6.1-inch infotainment screen located on the centre of the dashboard. This uses the Toyota Touch system for an easy-to-use menu to access onboard entertainment and car functions. On the Design trim, this accesses the integrated sat nav. The infotainment system has a DAB radio and Bluetooth and MP3 connectivity. Owners can connect their smartphones to the system for hands-free calling and listening to their personal music libraries.

Technology

The Toyota Verso comes with a range of driver assistance features. Lane departure warning notifies the driver when they are close to the edges of their lane, helping to prevent drifting. Also included are auto high beam headlights that automatically switch between high and low beam when the car detects an oncoming vehicle.

The Verso also features include hill hold assist. This prevents the car from rolling backwards until the driver is ready to accelerate. Cruise control is incorporated on the Icon trim and above. This maintains a set speed, helping reduce driver fatigue. On the Icon trim level and above, you will find auto wipers as well as a rear-view parking camera.

Safety features include electronic stability control and traction control. An intelligent steering assist system is also included. In the event of the car skidding, this will assist the driver in turning in the opposite direction to bring the car under control.

The automatic braking system detects an oncoming collision and applies the brakes if the driver has not already done so. This works alongside a pre-collision system that alerts the driver with a forward collision warning.

Safety

The Euro NCAP awarded the Toyota Verso five stars out of five on the safety tests. They also awarded the Verso good scores for adult and child occupancy tests, with 89% for adult protection and 75% for child protection. It scored 86% on safety assist features.

Other safety features include ISOFIX points in the outer seats in the middle row, which are used to attach child seats securely into the car. There are also seven airbags located strategically around the cabin. These protect both front and rear passengers, while a seat belt warning alerts the driver to any passenger that does not have a seatbelt on.
