What is the Audi S1?

Small yet mighty, the Audi S1 is an exciting, high-performance hatchback with a premium look and feel. As part of the Audi A1 range, the S1 trim is a sporty option with enhanced power and handling, putting it at the higher end of the trim range. Released as a variation of the Mk1 Audi A1, the S1 was on the UK market from 2014 to 2018.

The S1 retains the compact feel that made the entry-level Audi A1 Mk1 so popular. However, unlike other trims, the S1 comes in four-wheel drive, something that isn’t particularly common for smaller hatchbacks. In addition, it utilises electronically controlled dampers, allowing drivers to switch settings via an in-car menu.

With serious power beneath the bonnet, the S1 is a luxury compact hatchback suited to petrolheads and thrill-seekers who want their A1 to be a cut above the standard Audi offering.

Audi S1 history

As a part of the A1 family, the S1 is an important part of Audi’s modern heritage. The A1 was a relative newcomer to the German manufacturer’s lineup, first in production in 2010. Its Mk1 was on the market from 2010 until 2018, and throughout this period it underwent significant changes.

Originally launched as a three-door model, the A1 Sportback was a five-door iteration of the Mk1, which followed its predecessor into the marketplace two years later. The original included two petrol engines – a 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre turbo – as well as a 1.0-litre TFSI and a 1.6-litre turbodiesel. The A1 Sportback included the same run of engines as the A1, with the addition of a 2.0-litre turbodiesel adding more weight to the lineup.

A range of limited-edition versions of the Mk1 were available alongside the S1, which was released in 2014. Its primary unique selling point came from its four-wheel drive. This was in line with other ‘S’ trims across the Audi range but was particularly notable on the A1 due to its compact size.

In the broader marketplace, it remains rare to offer a hot hatch as four-wheel drive, so the S1 had a distinctive offering compared to its competitors. Its 2.0-litre TFSI engine brings serious power to proceedings, with a 0-62mph time as low as 5.6 seconds. The S1 is available in both three and five door iterations, and it is the three-door model, with 231bhp, that delivers this range-topping acceleration.

The Mk1 A1 ceased production in 2018 and was replaced by the Mk2 in 2019. This second-generation iteration remains available only in five-door form, competing with the likes of the MINI in the luxury hot hatch market. Once the Mk2 ceases production, Audi has announced that the A1 line will be dropped entirely from its lineup.

Where does the Audi S1 sit in the range?

The S1 is a premium, performance version of the A1. The Audi S1 shares much of its styling with the entry-level A1, it's the model’s sporty kit-out and four-wheel drive setup that set it apart as a premium offering in the A1 lineup.

What features and equipment does the S1 have?

As a more upmarket offering of an already premium hatchback, the Audi S1 comes with a range of drive-enhancing features that elevate comfort. Plus, a range of style updates set the S1 apart further from the entry-level Audi A1 – namely a roof spoiler, an aggressive bumper redesign and wide 17-inch alloy wheels. These wheels can be upgraded to a larger 18-inch size for an additional cost.

With both three-door and five-door models of the S1 available, the appeal of this A1 iteration can suit drivers keen for power to those seeking premium comfort from luxury design and impressive tech. With Bluetooth connectivity available as standard, the entertainment system can be upgraded with a BOSE surround sound 14-speaker system, and a Technology pack that adds a Wi-Fi hotspot to your S1.

To offer a customised driving performance, electronic dampers on the suspension can be adjusted via a ‘Drive Select’ switch on the centre console. Options range from ‘Efficiency’, which creates a soft ride, to ‘Dynamic’, which reduces body roll.

Sports seats are another optional extra on the S1 trim, although the standard seats are comfortable and supportive, as you’d expect from a premium brand like Audi. There are two ISOFIX seats in the rear too, making the installation of child seats simple. Further extras on the S1 include parking sensors in the front and rear, as well as cruise control and high beam assist.
