What is the Audi A3 S Line?

The Audi A3 S Line is a premium hatchback that represents the sporty side within the A3 range. Launched as part of Audi's pioneering A3 lineup, which debuted in 1996, the S Line trim offers the visual appeal of the high-performance S3 and RS3 models without the associated costs.

The A3 S Line is perfectly suited to young families or those looking for a compact runaround. Its dimensions make it ideal for urban and suburban driving, while its luxurious interior and impressive space offer comfort and practicality. Its performance rivals include the Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG Line, BMW 1 Series M Sport and Volkswagen Golf S.

The S Line trim elevates the model with a more aggressively styled body kit, unique alloy wheels and lowered suspension. It boasts the same engines as the other trims in the range, delivering a blend of performance and efficiency that will appeal to both petrol and diesel lovers.

Audi A3 S Line history

Audi set the standard for premium hatchbacks with the first-generation A3 in 1996. Effectively kick-starting the premium compact family hatchback segment, it proved instantly and enduringly popular. The model was available in three- and five-door formats with a choice of strong petrol and diesel engines.

The next edition of the A3 came in 2003 and was available as a hatchback in both three and five-door as well as with a two-door convertible body. It featured improved passenger space and comfort with an extended engine range. It was with the Mk2 A3 that the S Line trim was introduced, arriving in showrooms in 2005. It proved popular thanks to its comprehensive equipment levels and strikingly sporty styling.

With the Mk3 A3 came an even wider choice for motorists. Body style options were increased, with the addition of a four-door saloon iteration, and the engine options were again revised. Notably, a plug-in hybrid joined the lineup, providing an eco-conscious option. The S Line trim remained as the top-spec variant of this generation until 2020.

The fourth generation A3 arrived in 2020, bringing a slimmed down lineup. Body style options consisted of five-door hatchback and four-door saloon formats only, and the engine range incorporated more units with mild hybrid technology. A choice of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid provides drivers with something to suit any needs and budget.

Like the A3 model itself, the A3 S Line has seen several updates during its lifetime, including the introduction of LED headlights and tail-lamps with strobing indicators, a leather multi-function steering wheel and leather seats. The infotainment system has been upgraded to include a large touchscreen with smartphone mirroring technology, and the virtual cockpit provides crisp, clear information.

Where does the Audi A3 S Line sit in the range?

Until 2020, the Audi A3 S Line sat at the top of the A3 range, offering a sporty look without the high running costs of the more performance orientated S3 and RS3 models. From 2020 onwards, the S Line trim sat beneath the Vorsprung, remaining a popular option. Mk4 editions of the trim level feature 18-inch alloy wheels, a sports body kit and xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights, setting it apart from its siblings in the lineup.

What features and equipment does the Audi A3 S Line have?

From its 18-inch alloy wheels and lowered suspension to its striking bumper design, rear spoiler and extended side sills, the athletic S Line is noticeably eye-catching. It’s also a practical option, offering a 380-litre boot (which expands to 1,200 litres with the rear seats folded flat) and a cabin furnished with comfortable and supportive sports seating with leather trim and S embossing. Other features include dual zone climate control and a Drive Select system with Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Individual modes.

The infotainment system includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen colour display, DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity and sat nav. The A3 S Line also includes Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, letting you manage compatible smartphone apps via the touchscreen. Alternatively, you can use voice control or Amazon Alexa to access infotainment features.

The A3 S Line also comes equipped with a range of safety measures, including automatic emergency brakes, hill-hold assist, cruise control and lane-departure warning. Rear parking sensors are also fitted to make reversing and parking manoeuvres easier.
