The DS 4 is a premium five-door hatchback, designed to combine the practicality of an SUV with the comfort of a hatchback. The DS 4 first released in 2010 under the Citroën brand. By the time of the 2015 facelift, the DS 4 was featured in the DS company’s range following its separation from Citroën. Practicality and style of the car

The DS 4 is designed to be more practical than its rival hatchbacks with its SUV DNA. For this reason, the Mk2 is one of the larger models in this class. It has a height of 1,470mm, width of 1,830mm and length of 4,400mm, making it 45mm taller and 14mm wider than the Audi A3’s 1,425mm and 1,816mm respectively. The DS 4 is also 58mm taller than the Mercedes-Benz A-Class’s height of 1,412mm.

The DS 4 offers plenty of boot space. It has a 430-litre boot capacity with all rear seats folded up – 50 litres more than an Audi A3 hatchback and 60 litres more than the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Fold these down and there are 1,240 litres. The DS 4’s low lip also means it’s easy to load heavy items without too much strain.

This model is also a family-friendly one. When it comes to towing medium-sized trailers and compartments, the DS 4’s maximum braked towing capacity of 1,500kg will be useful. There’s also a good range of cabin comfort, meaning there’s no difficulty settling in on long distances. Across all five seats, there’s ample leg, knee and head room with even tall passengers being afforded reasonable space in the rear seats.

You will find ISOFIX points on the outer rear seats for attaching safety seats. And, for keeping the cabin tidy, there are decent-size door bins and a recess for storing keys under the front arm rest. The glovebox also has enough space to store a map and small, handheld accessories.

The DS 4’s running costs are typical for a premium hatchback. Its insurance groups range from 19 to 32, while most DS 4s qualify for an annual road tax of up to £180.

How a used DS 4 drives

The DS 4 can come with pure petrol, plug-in hybrid or diesel engines. In the petrol range, there is a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine which produces 130bhp, goes from 0-62mph in 9.9 seconds, with a range of 56.6mpg. There is also a 1.6-litre turbocharged PureTech engine which generates 165bhp, and goes from 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds, with 50.4mpg.

If you’re looking for a diesel engine, the MK1 has a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine which has 150bhp, and accelerates to 62mph in 10.9 seconds, with 74mpg. The 2.0-litre BlueHDi engine can be configured to generate either 150bhp or 180bhp. The 150bhp engine accelerates to 62mph in just over 8.5 seconds with range of 57.6 mpg, while the 180bhp option goes from 0-62mph in 8.6 seconds. Only available with an automatic gearbox, its range is 64.2 mpg.

The DS 4 can also come with a plug-in hybrid engine. The E-Tense 225 combines a PureTech 1.6-litre petrol engine with a 108bhp electric motor to create a combined 222bhp engine. Thanks to its 12.4kWh battery, this engine has an all-electric range of 38.5 miles and a top speed of 83mph in its E-drive setting. It can accelerate from 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds with a quoted combined range of 183.8 mpg.

All Mk2 models are only available with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the Mk1 can be equipped with a five or six-speed manual instead.

Features you can expect in a DS 4

A large part of the DS 4’s appeal is its standout appearance. Sitting low to the ground and with lowered bumpers and sleek headlights, the Mk1’s signature styling was attractive and practical. With the release of the Mk2, the model’s exterior aesthetic has been revamped significantly. Its head and taillights boast jewel-style design, giving them an outstanding presence when driving at night. Daylight running lights zigzag down the front bumper which features a prominent and patterned front grille to create a striking front profile.

Sharp creases and sculped doors help slim the middle of the model and add to its streamlined design.

Interior

Step into the cabin and you’ll discover the same angular design throughout the interior. Soft-touch materials and smooth leather feature across the dashboard and upholstery with high-density foam seats offering you great comfort while you drive.

While seated in the driver’s seat of the Mk2, your air conditioning grille is built into the front panel of the driver’s door, creating a wraparound feel. The electric window controls are also placed at an angle on the front panel for ease of access and use.

Technology

The Mk2 features a ten-inch touchscreen above the central console which contains the DS 4’s infotainment system. This system allows you to control the hands-free system, sat nav, climate controls and media. Depending on trim, this system can also support smartphone mirroring, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. You can also interact with this screen through soft-touch plastic buttons on your multi-functional steering wheel.

The Mk2 also has a seven-inch digital instrument display which contains information about your drive, including your driven distance, speed, fuel economy, fuel and battery charge level and sound information.

The DS 4 has an extensive range of safety options, helping it achieve a four-star safety rating from Euro NCAP. Its adult occupant safety score is 85% while the child occupant score is 86%.
