DS overview

Citroën first used the DS name (pronounced DEE-ess) for a vehicle it produced between 1955 and 1975. Launched at the 1955 Paris Motor Show, the DS caused a sensation thanks to its glamorous styling and innovation, and Citroën sold 80,000 cars within the first 10 days.

  

35 years after production ended, Citroën revived the DS line in 2010. The first models to bear the name were the DS 3 and DS 4 hatchbacks. Based on the Citroën C3, the DS 3 won a multitude of awards and, in 2013, became the best-selling premium subcompact car in Europe. DS became a standalone brand in 2015, representing premium editions of Citroën cars. As such, Groupe PSA owned it until 2021, when PSA merged with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to form Stellantis.

  

Designed with French expertise and flair, DS vehicles are known for their avant-garde style and their focus on performance. Although the vehicle range is modest compared to rivals, a variety of body styles and powertrains are on offer to suit different requirements. The manufacturer committed to a progressive strategy of becoming 100% electric by 2024, and as such, all its vehicles come in either plug-in hybrid or pure electric form.

A sporty, compact SUV, the DS 3 Crossback replaced the DS 3 supermini in 2018. With its bold styling and generous equipment levels, it lives up to its premium title. At launch it was the first all-electric small SUV on the market, proving especially attractive to eco-conscious drivers. Low running costs and a five-star safety rating further add to its appeal.

 

The DS 7 is a mid-size SUV that provides an attractive alternative to more mainstream rivals. Released in 2017, it offers plenty of interior space for families, as well as premium design touches that enhance the driving experience. In line with the brand’s commitment to electrification, the model is available as a plug-in hybrid as well as a diesel.

 

Introduced in 2011, the DS 4 is a hatchback that delivers a premium experience and efficient motoring. Available in petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid guises, as well as four trim levels, it caters to a range of needs, from shopping trips and school runs to business use. Its distinctive styling is also a highlight, helping the model to reach just shy of 50,000 sales in 2022-23.

  

Citroën launched the DS 3 as the first vehicle under the revived DS name, and it has enjoyed great success since its 2010 release. The original hatchback was a multi-award winner offering low emissions and a luxurious interior. Upon entering its second generation in 2018 it became the DS 3 Crossback, but a refresh saw it return simply to ‘DS 3’ in 2023. The all-electric variant has been available since 2019 and offers 250 miles of range.

  

Manufacturer awards

Citroën established DS as a brand in its own right in 2015, and DS has since received its fair share of recognition across the automotive industry. In both 2019 and 2020 the manufacturer won the What Car? Used Car Scheme Award for its DS Certified programme. The level of service and benefits offered by the brand surpassed that of competitors, making it particularly attractive to buyers.

  

In terms of models, DS won the Best Interior title at the 2018 Festival Automobile International for the DS 7 Crossback. The DS 4 won Diesel Car of the Year at the 2022 Diesel&EcoCar Magazine Awards, and in 2023, the DS E-TENSE PERFORMANCE concept won Concept of the Year at the GQ Car Awards.

  

Since its formation in 2021, DS’s parent company, Stellantis, has received awards for its efforts in sustainability and the improvements to its vehicle repair network.
