It looks like the Ford Fusion has been on a diet! A new concept car was revealed on Tuesday, which is a whopping 800 pounds lighter than other Fusion models on the market.

By using composite materials, Ford has managed to cut 25% of the weight from the mid-sized family sedan. Each material has been meticulously scrutinised and a lighter alternative selected. For the body of the car, a composite of aluminium, high-strength steel and magnesium has been used, which has vastly reduced the overall weight of the car.

Care has been taken to alter every single part of the car, right down to the engine itself, which has been trimmed down to a one-litre, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine which has a much lower fuel economy than the regular Fusion model. Keen to slim down even more, Ford have partnered up with Samsung’s SDI group in the hope of building more efficient lightweight batteries which would use a combination of lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries to achieve a lighter product.

Two of these cars are currently being put through safety tests, but Ford is confident that the lightweight changes will not affect performance. We’re very excited to hear the results of the safety tests, and to get further details of how the new concept car fares performance-wise. A focus on weight reduction could be an important step forward for the automotive industry, and would have great economical benefits.
