The stylish and sporty Abarth 124 Spider is a two-seat soft-top roadster, part of Abarth’s 124 range. Fiat produced the first 124 Spider in 1966 before Abarth, Fiat’s performance division, souped it up for its 1972 release. Three years later, the Rally model went on to claim victory at the European Rally Championship.

Abarth 124 Spider updates and facelifts

The Abarth 124 Spider, also known as the 124 Abarth Stradale, was first released in November 1972 as the performance version of the Fiat 124 Spider. It was then re-released in 2016 in a joint venture with Mazda.

In 2016, fifty years after its initial release, Abarth revealed the new and improved 124 Spider at the Geneva Motor Show. This model was manufactured by Mazda for the FCA Italy brand. The Mazda MX-5 is the main competitor of the Abarth 124 Spider with both cars sharing a lot of the same mechanics. The Abarth 124 Spider also rivals the Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ due to the similar handling and driving experience offered. The model’s punchy performance also pits it against models like the Audi TT Roadster.

In 2017, Abarth revealed the special edition 124 Spider Scorpione at the Geneva Motor Show. The 124 Spider Scorpione featured higher specs, including a mechanical locking differential, the classic black bonnet and a deluxe interior with red and black leather sports seats. It was produced between July 2017 and May 2018.

In 2018, stunt driver Alastair Moffat set a Guinness World Record in the Abarth 124 Spider achieving the “fastest figure of eight, five times between two cars” in a time of 45.66 seconds, neatly demonstrating the nimble nature of the roadster.

Practicality and style of the car

The Abarth 124 Spider offers a comfortable ride and plenty in the way of practicality. The car itself is low slung, and the driving position mimics that of a traditional sports car, with a straight view down the bonnet. Measuring 4,054mm long by 1,740mm wide and standing 1,233mm tall, the Abarth 124 Spider is slightly smaller than the Toyota GT86 (which measures, 4,240mm by 1,775mm by 1,320mm) and the Subaru BRZ (which measures 4,265mm by 1,775mm by 1,310mm). This makes the model easier to manoeuvre and delivers a more exhilarating and close-to-the-ground driving experience.

The Abarth 124 Spider offers 140-litres ofboot space, 10 litres more than the Mazda MX-5. It also has a neat slot behind the seats to allow the fabric roof to fold away without impacting luggage room. A reasonably sized glovebox can be found between the two seats inside the car to keep the cockpit decluttered. You get a removable cup holder between the two seats, which can be moved to a slot in the passenger footwell, and compact door bins on each door. There is also a dedicated space for your phone in front of the gearstick.

All controls within the car are within easy reach and the infotainment system on the centre console can be operated using a rotary controller or seven-inch touchscreen. The folding roof is manual but is quick and easy too operate. Just undo the latch, manually pull the roof down and click it firmly into place. To put it back up, flick the lever between the seats, pull the roof over the car and clip back into position.

Running costs

The Abarth 124 Spider falls into insurance groups 29-31, depending on the engine and trim. This is lower than the Toyota GT86, which falls into groups 30-35. Road tax will cost between £180 and £240 per year, which is comparable to a Mazda MX-5 of a similar age.

How a used Abarth 124 Spider drives

The Abarth 124 Spider has a 1.4 Turbo MultiAir 4-cylinder engine, offering up 170bhp and 250Nm of torque from the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The four-outlet exhaust delivers a satisfying rumble, louder than its Fiat counterpart, particularly when you hit the sport button. The car goes from 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds (6.9 for the automatic).

Each trim of the Abarth 124 Spider comes with a petrol engine with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. You’ll get 44.1mpg with the manual transmission and 42.8mpg with the automatic. The model features Bembo brakes, Bilstein dampers, firm springs and anti-roll bars for a dynamic driving experience.

Features you can expect in an Abarth 124 Spider

Interior

The Abarth 124 Spider offers a luxury interior design including a leather steering wheel, Alcantara leather-trimmed dash, alloy pedals and suede gaiter. Black or red leather seats are available for added luxury. The overall styling is a nice nod to its rallying heritage without feeling overtly retro. A special touch comes courtesy of the Abarth numbered plaque screwed on the bulkhead between the seats.

Technology

All trims come with a generous level of equipment as standard, including keyless start, heated seats, cruise control, and automatic air conditioning. For in-car entertainment, there is DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports and a seven-inch touchscreen. Depending on the original build of the car, some models may come with extras like a sat nav, a Bose sound system, a Visibility Pack with full automatic LED headlights, and wipers and rear parking sensors.

Safety

The Abarth 124 Spider has not been crash tested by Euro NCAP. The Mazda MX-5, on which the model is based, received a four-star rating when it was tested in 2015. Neither the Toyota GT86 nor the Subaru BRZ have been tested by Euro NCAP owing to their low sales volumes.

Abarth has included a range of safety equipment in the model including front side, front passenger and driver airbags alongside electronic stability control and ABS. The car also has ISOFIX anchor points on the passenger seat.
