Dacia overview

Dacia was founded in Romania in 1966 by the government of Nicolae Ceausescu. Dacia (pronounced DA-chee-uh) has since established itself as one of the world’s best value automotive brands. The name derives from the name given to Romania by the Romans. The manufacturer's first vehicle was called the Dacia 1100. It was this model that kick-started the manufacturer’s mission to produce modern and affordable family cars.

After an investment by Groupe Renault in 1999, Dacia began to find success across Europe. Its Logan range was widely sold on the continent. The Sandero and Duster soon followed, becoming mainstays of the brand’s lineup. In 2013 Dacia came to the UK and swiftly found success by offering a smaller vehicle range compared to competitors. The manufacturer sold over 250,000 cars in its first decade in Britain, and 8 million globally.

Dacia takes a no-nonsense and affordability-first attitude to motoring. This has earned the brand a strong following across Europe. In 2022 the brand updated its identity, pledging to continue delivering simplicity and durability. The manufacturer also pledges to encompass a modernised image and the spirit of adventure.

Like many other manufacturers, Dacia is expanding its range of electrified vehicles. It offers hybrid and Bi-Fuel options on selected models. The addition of the electrified Dacia Spring to the lineup also represents a first step into zero-emissions motoring.

Popular Dacia models

With its rugged SUV styling, the Dacia Sandero Stepway is a capable supermini. The Sandero Stepway offers drivers affordable urban motoring. It formed part of the manufacturer’s original UK lineup, entering its second generation in 2021. Among the engines on offer is an economical Bi-Fuel option. The interior provides all the essentials for a comfortable and connected drive. In 2022 alone, over 8,000 units were sold in the UK.

Launched in the UK in 2013, the Dacia Duster offers a bold, innovative approach to SUV motoring. The Duster is the brand’s best-selling model in the UK. The model makes entry into the SUV market accessible, providing space, practicality and efficiency. The Dacia boasts a four-wheel drive option. This delivers true off-road capability for those who like to adventure further afield. It's a family SUV built for everyday adventures.

The Dacia Sandero launched in 2013. Providing buyers with an entry-level price more often associated with used vehicles. Over the next decade, the model became more refined. The third-generation model gained sharper styling, improvements to the cabin and upgraded technology. This model comes with a Bi-Fuel engine option, which is more sustainable than traditional petrol and diesel units.

The Dacia Jogger is the brand’s debut seven-seater. The Jogger offers excellent flexibility for large families. Upholding the values of simplicity and durability, it’s an estate or MPV that’s strikingly styled and efficient to run. The hybrid option in particular appeals to those who drive primarily around town. Those seeking adventure further afield can even select a model with the sleep pack, which includes a support for a mattress.

Manufacturer awards

Despite only entering the UK market in 2013, Dacia has picked up awards from many mainstream publications. This has cemented its reputation as a quality manufacturer of affordable vehicles. In 2023 alone the brand has received 5+ awards. Dacia scooped Best Value Brand at the Auto Trader New Car Awards. The Jogger received Best Large Family Car at the UK Car of the Year Awards. Also getting a trio of titles at the What Car? Awards, including Best Small Car for Value (Sandero), Best Small SUV for Value (Duster) and Best Seven-Seater for Value (Jogger).

Dacia’s CEO Denis Le Vot was presented with the prestigious Sturmey Award at the Autocar Awards. The Sturmey Award recognises innovation and achievement in the automotive industry. It is named after Henry Sturmey, Autocar’s founding editor and a pioneer within the industry.
