For used Fiat Panda cars, choose Arnold Clark

Relaunched in 2011, the Fiat Panda followed Fiat’s long line of small city cars. Practical for urban living and great for nipping around town, the Fiat Panda has dynamic handling and with a range of engines to choose from, you can find the right performance and fuel economy for you.

Fiat Panda updates and facelifts

In 2020, the Fiat Panda received a facelift which saw a mild hybrid 1.0-litre petrol engine added to the line-up and the trims were realigned to meet customer demands. Also in 2020, the standard 1.2-litre petrol engine was removed from the engine lineup. In 2022, Fiat made some subtle changes to give the Panda a more retro design.

The Fiat Panda rivals other city cars on the market such as the Volkswagen up!, Kia Picanto, MINI Electric Hatch and Hyundai i10. It offers a practical and stylish driving experience, with several trims available which are designed to suit the different needs of Fiat Panda drivers.

Practicality and style of the car

A Fiat Panda offers a good amount of boot space considering its compact size. It has a capacity of 225 litres, and by sliding the rear seats forward this can be expanded to 260 litres. With the rear seats down this expands to 870 litres. And even when the rear seats are forward, there’s still plenty of legroom. A Fiat Panda can also come with split-folding rear seats which can provide more flexibility to configure the car to suit your journey.

In comparison to rivals, the Fiat Panda has more boot space than the 200 litres available in the Kia Picanto, and with the rear seats forward, more space than the Hyundai i10’s 252 litres.

The Fiat Panda’s boot is well suited for those getting about town and has plenty of room for fitting several bags of shopping or luggage items in. The box-like design helps with the practicality of the boot with its wide opening makes unloading and loading easy.

For transporting larger items, the Fiat Panda can tow up to 800kg, which is enough for towing a small trailer. This can be useful for moving large storage boxes or taking rubbish to refuse and recycling centres.

The bright and contemporary design of the Panda ensures it stands out on the road. Practical by design, its boxy body is ideal for city driving as it can fit into tight parking spaces. When opting for the 4x4 trim, the Panda comes with an additional SUV body kit that makes it well-suited for heading out of the city and into rougher terrain.

Running costs

The Fiat Panda is also affordable to run, sitting in insurance groups 3 to 12 and with a road tax of up to £180 a year. The Fiat Panda occupies a similar insurance group range as the Volkswagen up!, which sits in groups 2 to 17 and also has the same annual road tax of up to £180. On the other hand, the MINI Electric Hatch sits in insurance groups 22 to 23, much higher than the Panda.

How a used Fiat Panda drives

Used Fiat Pandas are available with petrol or diesel engines, with some offering mild hybrid technology.

The petrol engines consist of a 0.9-litre TwinAir petrol engine which comes with the four-wheel drive version of the Fiat Panda. This engine is capable of 84bhp and can do 0 to 62mph in about 12 seconds. On iterations before 2020, a 1.2-litre petrol engine is available that is capable of up to 68bhp and achieves 0 to 62mph in 14.5 seconds. These engines are available with either automatic or six-speed manual transmission.

The 0.9-litre engine achieves decent fuel economy, returning between 64.2mpg and 68.9mpg, while the 1.2-litre engine returns between 50.4mpg and 55.4mpg.

There is also the 1.0-litre three-cylinder MHEV petrol engine, which pairs a 3.6kW belt-integrated electric system and a lithium battery with a petrol engine for a combined 69bhp and 92Nm of torque. This is available with a six-speed manual transmission. The MHEV petrol engine has a fuel economy between 53.3mpg and 54.3mpg.

In iterations before 2017, the 1.3-litre Multi Jet diesel engine is available. This engine can put down 70bhp and achieves 0 to 62mph in 13 seconds. This diesel engine is also fuel efficient, returning between 67.3mpg and 74.3mpg.

Features you can expect in a Fiat Panda

Interior

Thanks to its large windows, the Fiat Panda’s interior feels much less compact than you might expect for a car of its size. This gives the driver good visibility when driving.

Its box-like design also helps make it comfortable inside, giving passengers decent legroom and headroom, so you can easily fit four adults comfortably. Rear passengers can slide the rear seats back to give them more legroom if desired.

Fiat’s trademark ‘squircle’ design decorates the dashboard, giving it a contemporary look appealing to modern drivers. Built with robust materials, the Panda’s interior is designed to last a long time and sustain knocks. This is great for families and those looking to use the vehicle for busy day-to-day life or transporting luggage and other items frequently.

There’s also decent interior storage on the Panda. A compact but deep glovebox comes in handy for storing personal items, and two cup holders in the front for the driver’s and front passenger’s convenience. If you’re looking at a used Fiat Panda fitted with the Flex Pack, it will also have a variety of extra storage features such as fold-down tables in the rear seats and a luggage net. These are helpful for those with children as they can be used when out and about on day trips.

Technology

The entry-level Life trim comes with an intuitive DAB radio set-up with USB and MP3 compatibility. A mount on the dashboard helps drivers use their smartphones for navigation and entertainment. On some trims, the Panda will also come with a seven-inch touchscreen with Fiat’s Uconnect radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.

Safety

The Fiat Panda comes with some intuitive safety features. These include an anti-lock braking system which can help to restore traction in an emergency, traction control, ISOFIX anchor points for child seats and power-assisted steering to increase control over steering. The city-braking system automatically brakes if it detects a collision with the car in front. Other features include; hill-hold assist and rear parking sensors, which are especially handy when parking on city streets.

On the exterior, design changes such as body-coloured mirrors and door handles and 16-inch alloy wheels with exposed red brake callipers complete the sporty look of the car.

Fiat Panda City Cross

The City Cross adds to the Panda LED driving lights, body-coloured bumpers, skid plates and new exterior detailing that gives it a robust look.

Fiat Panda Cross 4x4

The Cross 4x4 provides drivers with a driving mode selector that ensures the Panda performs better when on rough terrain with its off-road setting.
