We recently caught up with Gemma Fay to talk to her more about her role as Head of Women and Girls’ Rugby at Scottish Rugby Union. She took on the job in late 2017 following an incredible football career as a goalkeeper, where she made a record-breaking 203 appearances for Scotland.

Although Gemma is better known in the world of football, this career progression was one that made sense for her.

‘Going from having played international football and making the decision to retire is always a big step and it’s been quite hard. As I had quite a public profile in football then took the job in rugby – I think a few people were taken aback by that. But for me personally, I’ve worked for 15 years across many different sports so it was a really logical choice for me.’

Gemma has a broad overview of the women’s and girls’ game and has a plan in place in order to help improve standards and develop the game throughout Scotland.

‘It’s about creating better opportunities for our girls to train more often, to get fitter faster, get stronger and to play as much competitive rugby as possible. We’re working really hard as a team to make sure these opportunities are in place.’

You can watch the full interview below and find out about Gemma’s ideas to develop sport for women.
