The Interbrand rankings, calculated based on companies’ financial balance sheets as well marketing activities and potential profit, show Toyota as the top automotive brand in the list - but with many brands catching up.

Hyundai has been creeping up on stalwarts such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW to become one of the most valuable automotive brands in the world.

Hyundai have seen a sharp increase in the value of their brand - it's risen by 20.5% to a whopping $9bn. Ranking at 43 (and entering the Top 50 for the first time) represents the best ever position for the company, having been in the top 100 for the last 9 years. Since 2005, the brand's value has increased by 160% and its ranking has improved by 41 places.

Won Hong Cho, Hyundai Motor’s Chief Marketing Officer, said: “Hyundai’s significant growth in brand value reflects our enhanced status in the global market. This was made possible through global brand campaigns as well as diverse localised brand activities including sports marketing and CSR.

We will strengthen our efforts to become the most loved brand
We will strengthen our efforts to become the most loved brand by delivering even more value beyond customers’ expectations.”

Other car brands climbing the ranks include Porsche, Nissan and Volkswagen.

With 14 automotive companies making the Top 100 Global Brands, Michel Gabriel and Andrew Martschenko from Interbrand discuss the main trends in the automotive industry:

  • The increase in city populations has led to a growth in urban mobility concepts, and the need for carmakers to reach out to a younger generation.
  • Manufacturers are working hard to strike the balance between luxury and excess, and meet the diverging needs of consumers within the luxury market.
  • Brands are being forced to reassess everything from the buying process to supply chains partnerships and digital and social marketing.
  • Successful brands are the ones that are looking towards the future for opportunities, as the automotive industry transforms.

"The successful auto brand leader must inspire employees, sales partners, manufacturers, partners, stakeholders—and, of course, customers," say Gabriel and Martschenko.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin were recently voted into the top ten "Coolest Brands" in the world.

Marcus Breitschwerdt, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz UK, commented: “Our showrooms around the country are full of the coolest cars we’ve ever made, and we’re tireless in our efforts to bring more innovation, style –and great service of course – to more customers than ever before.”
