The new Mercedes-Benz S 600: images, spec and release date

Latest addition to the S-Class range, showcasing at Detroit Motor Show, will epitomise 'Essence of Luxury'

The S 600 won't be cheap – but it will be luxurious

The S 600 won't be cheap – but it will be luxurious

Mercedes-Benz is set to unveil the new S 600 at the Detroit Auto Show in the coming week and it looks like it will build on the luxury and innovative technology that characterises all S-Class models.

Travelling in the S 600 will feel like sitting in the luxurious surroundings of a private jet – and, with the abundance of technology at your disposal, it’s bound to be one amazing ride.

S-Class tradition of “the essence of luxury”

The overall performance of the new S 600 has certainly improved, with the twin turbo V12 engine seen in previous models now at 6.0 litre capacity. This helps pack a herculean 530hp and 830Nm of torque from just 1,900 rpm.

The engine features stop-start, which helps improve fuel economy from 20 mpg to 25.4 mpg, with the CO2 emissions dropping from 329g/km to 259g/km.

This car isn’t just powerful though – the S 600 is fast. You’ll go 0-62 mph in just 4.6 seconds, and could hit top speeds of 155 mph.

"The S-Class has always been the embodiment of our claim to deliver the very best in terms of both technology and design. Our flagship model, the S 600, epitomises the focus of our development work, the 'Essence of Luxury', in a way that no other model can.” - Ola Källenius, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Technology and design

This jaw-dropping list of features will provide S 600 owners with an immersive driving experience:

  • SPD - Smartglass technology developed by Research Frontiers brings Magic Sky Control to the S 600 through a panoramic roof. The technology helps block out UV and infrared rays, keeping the car cool and protecting passengers.
  • The Collision Prevention Assist of previous S-Class models becomes Collision Prevention Assist Plus. This allows the system to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 124 mph.
  • As an optional extra, electric windscreen heating ensures a clear screen at all times, even in sub-zero temperatures. Wouldn’t that be handy in Scotland?
  • The innovative head-up display provides the driver with a view reminiscent to that of a jet fighter pilot. All the information needed, such as the current speed, will appear in the driver’s field of view allowing for a distraction-free drive.
  • The head unit is controlled by the introduction of a touch pad using familiar gestures for smartphone users and giving the driver even greater control over the infotainment system. The system recognises a range of languages through Linguatronic, whether they are written on the touch pad or issued as vocal commands.
  • The Driving Assistance Package Plus includes Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control (which can also steer the car).
  • Magic Body Control provides an adaptive suspension system for the S 600. It scans the roads ahead for bumps with the use of small cameras and adjusts the suspension accordingly. Pretty cool.
  • Got passengers? Let them chill out in the back on reclining seats with an ice cold drink from the on-board fridge.

These are just some of the highlights of the feature-laden Mercedes-Benz S 600, and we’re sure to discover more before it hits the market in March 2014. What we do know is that it will set you back a fair bit of pocket money.
