Hyundai overview
The Hyundai Motor Company (pronounced ‘hai-un-day') is a South Korean car manufacturer. The brand was founded in 1967 by Chung Ju-yung. Hyundai’s first model was the Cortina, released as a collaboration with the Ford Motor Company in 1968. Today, the Hyundai Motor Group is one of the biggest vehicle manufacturers in the world.
Hyundai vehicles are globally renowned for their reliability, quality, stylish design and exceptional value for money. The Korean word ‘hyundai’ means ‘modernity’, which fits with the company’s global reputation as a technology leader. Hyundai has invested significantly in electric vehicles, fuel cell technology and autonomous driving.
In 2013, Hyundai launched the world’s first mass-produced fuel cell vehicle in the UK, the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell. Another milestone for the company came in 2018 with the release of the Hyundai Kona Electric. This was Hyundai's first fully electric SUV, positioning the brand as a pioneer in the UK electric vehicle (EV) sector.
Hyundai has embraced ‘connected car technology’. Making use of artificial intelligence to offer helpful driver assistance features. These features can include voice-activated navigation, remote start and remote control of climate and other systems. Some used Hyundai models also have vehicle tracking and real-time diagnostics and maintenance information.
Popular Hyundai models
Among Hyundai’s most popular models is the Tucson. This compact crossover SUV was first launched in 2004 as a smaller option to the Santa Fe. Its second generation was marketed as the ix35 and then the Tucson name was reinstated for the third generation. The fourth generation’s onboard tech, premium cabin and hybrid power make it a highly desirable mid-size SUV. It won the Auto Express Mid-Size SUV of the Year for three years running in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
The Kona was released in 2017 as the company’s smallest crossover SUV until the Venue debuted in 2019. Available in petrol, diesel, hybrid or full-electric, the Kona has enjoyed several facelifts over the years. The model has undergone design and performance enhancements. Also receiving extra cargo capacity and increased rear-seat legroom. The Kona Electric launched in 2018 with 39.2 kWh and 64 kWh battery capacities. The electric model offered an updated design, the latest technology and up to 300 miles range in a single charge. It is a popular choice for drivers looking for a competitively priced EV.
The Hyundai i20 is a supermini hatchback that made its debut in 2008. It's a stylish and spacious model that has been enduringly popular ever since its release. The Mk3 launched in 2023 featuring a new facelift. The Mk3 also received a punchy 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. This can produce 100bhp. This is linked to a choice of either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
First released in 2008, the Hyundai i10 is a compact city car ideal for driving around town and tucking into small spaces. Boasting a spacious interior with ample legroom to comfortably seat taller drivers, the i10 is a popular first car for new drivers and a practical choice for households looking for a handy second vehicle. Its Mk3 offers even more legroom, space for a fifth occupant and a large 252-litre capacity boot.
The Hyundai Bayon is a five-door subcompact crossover SUV, which launched in 2021. The Bayon is Hyundai’s smallest SUV in Europe. It is based on the third-generation Hyundai i20. The Bayon offers more smart technology including mild-hybrid powertrains, driver attention alert, an emergency call system, hill start assist, lane keep assist and parking sensors.
Launched in 2016, the Hyundai Ioniq has been billed as Hyundai’s answer to the Toyota Prius with its hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains. With its roomy interior and impressive features, the Ioniq offers excellent value for money. Its stylish silhouette, Bi-Xenon headlamps and LED taillights make it stand out from the crowd. A facelift in 2019 brought some interior and exterior style refinements and a larger 10.25-inch infotainment screen.
The Hyundai i30 is a mid-sized family car, which shares its platform with the popular family hatchback, the Kia Ceed. Released in 2006, the i30 has been manufactured in various iterations including three and five-door hatchback, five-door estate and a five-door liftback. Named Car Buyer's Car of the Year in 2012, it comes with a choice of three petrol engines and two diesel engines, either with manual or automatic transmission.
