Alpine overview

Alpine is a French car manufacturer established in 1955. Today its produces sports cars and racing cars. Pronounced al.pin in French and al.pine in English.

Jean Rédélé, a French race car driver and entrepreneur, founded Alpine. Rédélé, an ex-pilot, had experienced initial racing success with the Renault 4CV, and was also a dealer for the Renault brand. But after several years of modifying the 4CV, making it lighter and faster, he established Alpine as a standalone car brand. The Coupe des Alpes (Alpes Rally), a race which he had previously won was what inspired the brand name. Pasteur Avenue in Dieppe, was the Alpine plant original location in France.

The first Alpine car was a stylish sports model called the A106. After its launch Alpine went from strength to strength. By the sixties, the manufacturing of the new A108 was international. There were production locations in Brazil as well as France. The subsequent launch of the A110 saw further success for the brand. It remains one of the brands most iconic models to date. 2017 saw the launch of a new, modern version of the A110.

As demand for Alpine grew, it moved its production plant to a larger facility. It remained located in Rédélé’s hometown of Dieppe.

In 1973, Renault acquired Alpine. The two manufacturers were closely tied since the founding of Alpine, since its models used Renault-made engines. The same year, an Alpine-Renault car won the first ever World Rally Championships with the A110.

Renault continued to manufacture Alpine cars, before a hiatus that began in 1995 and lasted more than twenty years. During this time, it dropped the Alpine brand altogether. Relaunched in 2017 with the new A110, the new range has since seen numerous iterations. These include a Grand Tourisme sport coupe and the A110 S. In 2021, Renault changed the name of its Formula 1 division to Alpine.

Alpine announced the release of its first electric car, the A290, in 2023. The A290 is a luxury hot hatch with an ultra-modern interior, based on its parent company’s own EV: the Renault 5 city car.

Popular Alpine models

The A110 is Alpine’s most iconic model, and the only one currently available on the market. Initially produced as a sports car, the Alpine A110 was converted into a domestic vehicle, making it available to customers around the world.

Following Alpine’s relaunch in 2017, a new look Alpine A110 became the brand’s flagship unit. A stylish, powerful sports car with a Renault engine, the new A110 arrived in the UK in 2018. Several different model options were available, including a GT version and a two-seater coupé.

The A110 has also appeared in modern motorsport since the relaunch of the Alpine brand, with both track and rally models produced for racing.

Manufacturer awards

Alpine’s flagship model, the A110 won various awards since its launch. Awarded Evo Magazine’s Coupé of the Year in 2018 along with Top Gear Magazine’s Performance Car of the Year and Sports Car of the Year in the same year. It achieved What Car? Sports Car of the Year Award in 2019.

Alpine cars also boast one of the best infotainment systems on the market, winning the iF Design award in 2022.
