For used BMW iX3 cars, choose Arnold Clark

The BMW iX3 is the German brand’s first ever electric SUV. Launched in continental Europe in 2020, it arrived in the UK in 2021. The iX3 rivals other all-electric crossovers including the Mercedes-Benz EQA, Volvo XC40 and Tesla Model Y.

BMW iX3 updates and facelifts

The iX3 shares much of its stylish design and engineering with BMW’s compact X3 SUV but the ‘i’ in the name means there are no petrol or diesel engines. Instead, a zero-emissions electric motor drives the rear wheels. The result is comparable practicality and style to the X3 in a quieter, more eco-friendly package.

The five-seat iX3 also upholds BMW’s reputation as the ultimate driving machine, winning Best Electric SUV To Drive at the What Car? Cars of the Year Awards 2023. If you’re looking for a family SUV that’s enjoyable to drive but kinder to the planet, a used iX3 could be your perfect choice.

BMW gave the iX3 a facelift in 2021, with a larger version of its trademark kidney grille positioned between sleeker headlights that were 10mm narrower.

Practicality and style of the car

The driving position is excellent, with good adjustability for the driver’s seat and steering wheel. Plenty of leg, elbow, and headroom allows both front-seat occupants to get comfortable too. Spacious rear seats provide room for three adults to sit together and are also fitted with two ISOFIX child-seat anchors.

With 510 litres of boot space, the BMW iX3 offers comparable luggage room to an Audi Q4 e-tron, which has a 520-litre boot. The rear seats fold completely flat thanks to small levers that are easily accessed from the boot. This provides up to 1560 litres of luggage room –  comparable to its Audi rival’s 1490 litres. It’s also possible to fold the rear seats in a 40/20/40 split, allowing owners to create the perfect balance between luggage room and passenger space.

Towing capacity is 750kg whether the trailer has brakes or not, making a used iX3 the perfect choice for towing a small trailer.

Running costs

The BMW iX3 is rated in insurance groups 44 to 45 out of 50. This is directly comparable to the Mercedes-Benz EQA 350 and makes it a more affordable alternative to the Tesla Model Y, which sits in group 50. Like all electric cars, road tax is free.

How a used BMW iX3 drives

All versions of the BMW iX3 are powered by an 80kWh lithium-ion battery that’s comparable in size to those fitted to electric SUV rivals. With a single-speed gearbox and one electric motor driving the rear wheels, the iX3 produces 286bhp, accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds and offers a range of 286* zero-emissions miles between charges on the official government test cycle.

BMW quotes 32 minutes to charge the battery from 10-80% on a 150kW rapid charger, and 7.5 hours to charge from 0-100% using an 11kW charger – the type generally used for overnight home charging.

Features you can expect to find in a BMW iX3

Interior

The BMW iX3 shares much of its interior with the regular X3, meaning the iX3 features impressive build quality, generous storage at the bottom of each door, five comfortable seats and logically organised controls. The gear selector lever also has the same operating logic for parking and moving away as its X3 sibling, making an iX3 a great way to transition from petrol or diesel to a fully electric car.

To this familiar base, the iX3 receives subtle BMW i Blue highlights on its gear selector lever, Start/Stop button and multi-function steering wheel. It also switches to dedicated digital displays tailored for an electric vehicle, including Driving style analysis that provides tips to encourage a more efficient driving style.

Live Cockpit Professional is standard equipment and includes two displays. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument display replaces conventional analogue dials behind the steering wheel, with information that can be configured to suit each driver. A 10.3-inch central infotainment screen is controlled via touch or the iDrive rotary controller located next to the gear selector – this makes it possible to scroll through content displayed on the screen and minimises eyes-off-the-road time.

The interior of the BMW iX3 feels light and spacious, thanks to its panoramic glass sunroof. This can be controlled by the car’s key. The sunroof also features sun protection glass, which reduces the impact of UV rays on occupants.

Technology

The iX3 is equipped with comprehensive driver-assistance systems as standard. Driving Assistant Professional includes Active Cruise Control (ACC) to maintain a set distance to the vehicle in front, even during stop-start driving. It also adds Steering and Lane Control Assistant, helping to keep the iX3 centred in its lane.

The iX3 features Standard Parking Assistant, which incorporates parking sensors, a rear-view camera and can take control of the accelerator, brakes and steering during parking in either parallel or perpendicular spaces. Other technological features on the BMW iX3 include Digital Key, keyless entry and exit, a smart opener for the boot and noise-reduction glazing.

Safety

Fitted with seven airbags, the BMW iX3 has earned a maximum five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, including an occupant protection score of 93%, with 84% for child protection.

Active Protection is standard on the BMW iX3. This initiates additional measures if an accident is imminent, including tightening seatbelts, closing windows and braking automatically after impact. Other safety features included on the iX3 are BMW’s adaptive LED headlights with high beam assist, to help improve visibility in poor driving conditions. Some variants will feature Drive Recorder, a system with a crash and an event recorder, which documents data in relation to any accidents.

Trims available on the BMW iX3

BMW iX3 M Sport

M Sport is the iX3’s entry-level trim and offers a very high level of standard equipment. Highlights include M Sport body styling and high-gloss Shadowline trim, adaptive LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels and automatic tailgate operation. The interior features BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional infotainment system, leather upholstery, three-zone climate control and a panoramic glass sunroof.

BMW iX3 M Sport Pro

M Sport Pro sits at the top of the range. In addition to M Sport trim, it upgrades to 20-inch alloy wheels and adds extra Shadowline exterior trim. Internally, the seatbelts are feature BMW Motorsport’s red, purple and blue accents, and a head-up display that projects key driving information on the base of the windscreen and a Harman Kardon surround-sound stereo system are included on this trim.
