For used Citroën Berlingo cars, choose Arnold Clark

First released in 1996, the Berlingo is all about practicality, providing a quirky alternative to a mainstream MPV. The model’s success speaks for itself: over a million units of the Mk1 edition were sold worldwide. When the Mk2 was launched in 2008 – named the Berlingo Multispace – it built on its winning formula, adding more space and a higher quality cabin. The Berlingo name is often associated with Citroën’s acclaimed small van, which is the light commercial vehicle that this model is based upon.

Citroën Berlingo updates and facelifts

Rivals were soon launched in the form of the Peugeot Partner Tepee, the Vauxhall Combo Life and the Volkswagen Caddy Life, but the Berlingo continues to prove popular.

The Mk2 was updated in 2014. On its launch, the Mk3 boasted a revised engine lineup, a more comfortable interior and additional tech features. Buyers can choose from petrol or diesel fuel, both of which deliver a smooth and refined drive.

The Mk2 and Mk3 are both available with five or seven seats depending on your needs, and there are three trim levels to choose from: Feel, Flair and Flair XTR. The third generation arrived in 2018, underpinned by the same platform as the Citroën C5 Aircross. Technology and safety measures were stepped up too, making this a more attractive proposition than ever.

The Mk3 Berlingo has won over motorists and critics alike. It won MPV of the Year at the What Car? Awards in both 2019 and 2020, as well as being named MPV of the Year at Company Car Today’s CCT100 Awards in 2021 and 2022.

Practicality and style of the car

In the Citroën Berlingo, passengers have ample room to stretch out, with head, leg and shoulder room all proving generous. The M model, with five seats, is large enough for most families, and with ISOFIX mounting points in the rear, you can fit up to three car seats in the rear.

The rear doors also slide open, which makes it even easier to get everybody in and out of the car, even when you’re parked in a tight spot. If you do need that extra space, the XL model, with seven seats, gives you greater flexibility. It’s worth noting, however, that the third-row seats are best suited to children or young teens.

Mk2 editions (2008–2018) with five seats offer 675 cubic litres of boot space, which grows to an impressive 3,000 litres with the seats folded. The whole second row (and third row in seven-seat variants) can be removed completely, for truly van-like capacity.

Opt for the Mk3 version (2018 onwards) and you get even more space – 775 cubic litres in the five-seat model and 1,050 litres in the seven-seater with the second-row seats in place. If you’re transporting long items, the front passenger seat can fold down too. A wide-opening boot also ensures loading and unloading all your luggage is simple.

If you’re looking to bring a light caravan or small trailer along on your journey, the Berlingo can accommodate an unbraked towing capacity of 740kg or a braked capacity of 1,200kg.

Running costs

The Berlingo MPV’s low running costs are part of its appeal. Mk2 models occupy a wide range of insurance groups according to the engine and trim you choose. The most affordable sit in group 4, while the highest spec variants are in group 23 of 50. If you’re considering a Mk3 Berlingo MPV you’ll find it sits in groups 11–15.

Road tax for the Mk2 is similarly varied, with many pre-2017 cars incurring a rate of only £20–35 per year. Those from April 2017 onwards – and Mk3 editions – are charged at the standard annual rate of £180.

How a used Citroën Berlingo drives

Opt for a Mk2 Berlingo (2008-2018) and you have the choice of a 1.6-litre petrol engine with 94bhp and 152Nm of torque, or a 1.6-litre diesel with outputs of either 99bhp or 118bhp. The petrol unit is best for trips around town and can achieve up to 39.8mpg.

The 99bhp diesel offers stronger performance, developing 254Nm of torque and returning 67.3–68.9mpg when paired with the standard six-speed manual gearbox. Automatic transmission is an option for this engine too. The 118bhp unit is more powerful still, producing 300Nm of torque, which is enough to get from 0-62mph in 11.4 seconds. It’s almost as economical as the 99bhp diesel too, with a combined fuel efficiency of 64.2mpg.

Choose a Mk3 edition (2018 onwards) and the engine lineup offers a 1.3-litre PureTech petrol unit with either 108bhp or 128bhp and a 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel with 99bhp or 128bhp. For the ultimate in efficiency, choose the 99bhp diesel, which returns an impressive 50.6mpg on the combined cycle and comes with a six-speed manual gearbox. If you want speed, however, the 128bhp diesel is the best option, accelerating from 0-62mph in 11 seconds. This variant comes only with eight-speed automatic transmission.

The petrol editions are suited to urban driving, providing enough pull to keep pace with city traffic. Like the diesel engines, the entry-level option comes with six-speed manual transmission, while the higher-powered unit is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Features you can expect in a Citroën Berlingo

Interior

As a vehicle that’s built to handle all of life’s day-to-day challenges, the Citroën Berlingo puts simplicity and durability first. The cockpit has a van-like feel, with clear controls and a high-positioned gear stick.. Meanwhile, the seats are upholstered in smart, hard-wearing fabric that’s designed to withstand muddy boots, spills and more. Choose a Mk3 edition (2018 onwards) and there’s a stylish feel to the cabin, with quality cloth trims and brighter colour options for the seats. Some trims even feature ambient lighting and a panoramic glass roof.

A total of 28 cubbies can be found throughout the Berlingo, offering up to 186 cubic litres of volume – that’s similar to the entire boot capacity of some city cars. Upper and lower glove boxes, large door bins and underfloor compartments are joined on some top-spec, five-seat variants by the Modutop system, a full-width airline-style locker. This is accessible from the rear row or the boot and can hold a maximum weight of 10kg.

Technology

Most Mk2 Berlingo cars come with an RDS radio and CD player as standard, while top-spec XTR trims offer a seven-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth and Mirrorlink for smartphone connectivity. If you choose an Mk3, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with DAB radio comes as standard, alongside Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

For the benefit of modern driver aids, choose the Mk3 Berlingo MPV. This edition comes with cruise control as standard, as well as handy features such as active lane assist, which prevents you straying from your lane on the motorway. Traffic sign recognition is also standard, helping you keep to the local speed limits.

Safety

Scoring a four-star rating in its 2018 Euro NCAP test, the Citroën Berlingo MPV is fitted with electronic stability control, emergency braking assistance and head and chest airbags as standard. Many iterations also come with Citroën’s Grip Control system, which optimises traction to provide extra stability in snowy or muddy conditions. Adult and child occupant scores are 91% and 81% respectively, meaning you and your passengers can travel with peace of mind.
