For used Hyundai i40 cars, choose Arnold Clark

The Hyundai i40 is a practical and stylish family car first unveiled at the 2011 Barcelona car show. The model is available in saloon and estate body types. Its all-round appeal and performance saw it win Company Car of the Year in 2012.

The i40 was released with a range of different petrol and diesel engines, ranging from 1.6 to 1.7 litres. Thanks to its combination of handy storage space, good running costs and smart technology, it is a great option for families, executives and city drivers. This makes it a competitor to other models like the Ford Mondeo, Škoda Superb and Vauxhall Insignia.

Hyundai i40 updates and facelifts

The Hyundai i40 was in production from 2011 to 2019. Both the saloon and Tourer received a facelift in 2015, which added design features to both the exterior and interior. On the body, both versions received a hexagonal grille, creating a more striking front profile. New alloy wheels were also added along with additional paint finishes.

In the cabin, soft-touch materials, a DAB radio and a more responsive touchscreen were included. To tweak performance, the Hyundai i40’s engines received stop/start, low rolling-resistance tires, and an air alternator. This facelift also added an advanced traction cornering system which offers improved traction and stability as you navigate country roads.

Practicality and style of the car

The Hyundai i40 saloon is one of the more compact models in its class, but still offers good cabin space for five tall occupants. Its height of 1,470mm compared to the Kia Optima’s 1,465mm means that there is 5mm more headroom. For more length, the i40 Tourer is 30mm longer and stands at 4,775mm.

Keeping the cabin tidy is easy thanks to the cubby holes in the centre console. Deep door bins are handy to store large drinks while the glovebox comes with a cooling feature making it ideal for storing fresh snacks.

A used Hyundai i40 also has a generous amount of boot space, offering 525 litres of boot space with all seats up – 35 litres more than the Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport. The Tourer has a standard boot of 553 litres, but this can be expanded to 1,719 litres with the seat folded flat. This is more than the Ford Mondeo Estate’s 1,630 litres and Mazda 6 Estate’s 1,664 litres.

The i40 is a suitable towing car and can pull up to 1,500kg when equipped with the 1.7-litre diesel engine. With a manual transmission paired to the higher-tuned 1.7-litre diesel, it can tow up to 1,800kg.

Running costs

The i40 offers good running costs across both its body types, with the saloon’s insurance group running from 12 to 20. This compares favourably to the Ford Mondeo saloon’s 12-27 range. The Tourer has the same insurance group and offers great value when compared to Ford Mondeo Estate’s range of 17-31.

Both the saloon and Tourer qualify for an annual road tax between £20 and £240, which is better than the Ford Mondeo Estate’s range of £20 and £395.

How a used Hyundai i40 drives

The Hyundai i40 is available with a 1.6 and 1.7-litre petrol and diesel engines, with different powerful configuration options. All of these engines are paired with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual gearbox. A seven-speed DCT automatic gearbox is available on the more powerful configuration of the 1.7-litre diesel.

In the petrol range, there are two versions of the 1.6-litre GDi engine which generates 133bhp. This engine accelerates from 0-62mph in 11.6 seconds and returns 42.8mpg. This engine can also be paired with Hyundai’s emissions-cutting Blue Drive technology which adds stop/start, low-rolling resistance tyres and an improved alternator management system. This pushes this engine’s fuel economy to 47.1mpg.

The entry-level 1.6-litre diesel CRDi engine was added to the range in 2018. This engine accelerates from 0-62mph in just over 10.6 seconds and produces 134 bhp. It returns 60.1-62.8mpg. There is also a 1.7-litre diesel engine which can produce 113bhp or 139bhp. The former goes from 0-62mph in 12.9 seconds with economy of 47.1-55.4mpg. With Blue Drive, it achieves 62.8mpg.

The 139bhp engine accelerates from 0-62mph in just over 10 seconds while returning 56.5mpg. With Blue Drive, it returns 60.1-65.7mpg.

Features you can expect in a Hyundai i40

Interior

The Hyundai i40 has a well-designed interior with soft-touch and hard-wearing plastics making for a pleasant cabin. This plastic runs over the centre console, multi-functional steering wheel and surfaces. In the driving seat, there’s plenty of support and comfort and you’ll have a reasonably high seating position to give you a good view of the road. Acoustic shielding also means that engine noise is hushed in the cabin.

The Hyundai i40 has an attractive ‘wave design’ dashboard with silver chrome highlights which adds a welcome colour contrast. You’ll also find silver chrome insert and highlights on the steering wheel and centre console interface.

The i40 features a seven-inch touchscreen. This infotainment screen comes with sat nav and live traffic updates as well as Bluetooth connectivity. Thanks to its easy-to-use user interface, the menus are simple to navigate and fast to load, helping you easily cycle through different options while keeping your attention on the road. The infotainment system is linked to a six-speaker stereo sound system for good sound quality throughout the cabin.

The facelift also added a 4.2-inch LCD digital instrument cluster. This display shows you your fuel economy and distance driven. This screen and the analogue dials feature an attractive blue backlighting, making them easy to see at night.

Technology

Entry-level trims on the Hyundai i40 have a select range of technology features, including automatic headlights. They also come with an automatic light leveller, which is handy if you’re towing a heavy load.

You will find a lane-keeping assist with a Smart High Beam system which automatically dims your headlights to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers. There is also a speed limit identification system that automatically reads speed signs and displays them on your digital instrument display.

Step up to the top-level Premium trim and you will find a smart key that automatically unlocks the doors as you approach. There is an electric parking brake, a smart tailgate system which opens the boot with a wave of your foot, an adaptive front lighting system and static bending lights.
