Range Rover Sport updates and facelifts

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport Mk2 was launched in 2013, which brought a bold and modern look to the original Range Rover Sport, which was launched in 2005. The Mk2 also came with a new hybrid engine and performance enhancements, including a new aluminium chassis and front and rear suspension.

In 2017, the Range Rover Sport received a facelift, which made some subtle design changes to the exterior and interior of the vehicle. On the exterior, a new front and rear bumper design and a rear black spoiler were added as well as new LED headlight options. In the interior, the 2017 facelift added a dual-view touchscreen and upgraded seats with extra support.

The Mk3 Range Rover Sport was launched in 2022. Built on a different chassis than the Mk1 and Mk2, the Mk3 has a slightly different bodywork allowing it to be fitted with a range of engines. The interior features a 13.7-inch digital instrument display and a curved 13.1-inch infotainment screen. Outside, a new sleek front bumper and grille and retractable door handles add style.

Practicality and style of the car

The Mk2 Range Rover Sport has a 784-litre boot. This can be expanded to 1,761 litres by folding down the rear seats. The boot space is still a useable 221 litres even when all seven seats are in use. With the hybrid engine option, the boot space reduces to 705 litres to accommodate the battery and electric motor. The Mk2 offers more space than the Maserati Levante’s 580 litres and the BMW X5’s 650 litres.

The Mk3 Ranger Rover Sport, because of the change in chassis and car dimensions, offers a 647-litre boot. This can be expanded to 1,491 litres by folding down the rear seats. Unlike the Mk2, the hybrid engine does not impact the size of the boot. In comparison to its rivals, the Mk3 offers a larger boot without needing to reduce the number of passengers it can carry. The Mercedes-Benz GLE offers 630 litres and the Lexus XR 461 litres.

The boot has a flat loading bay that enables easy loading of bulky items. Loading can be made even easier by lowering the suspension on the vehicle – this can even be done using the buttons located in the boot.

Most engines on the Mk2 and Mk3 can tow up to 3,500kg, enough for a small trailer or caravan. With hybrid engines, the Mk2 can tow up to 2,500kg, whereas the Mk3 can tow up to 3,000kg. The Mk2’s SVR P575 petrol engine can tow up to 3,000kg.

Running costs

The Range Rover Sport falls between insurance brackets 24 to 50 and has an annual road tax between £150 and 570, depending on the iteration and engine type. This is lower than the Mercedes-Benz GLE which falls into insurance groups 44 to 50 and has a road tax between £560 and £570 and the Maserati Levante, which falls into group 50.

How a used Range Rover Sport drives

The Range Rover Sport is available in a range of petrol, diesel and hybrid engines.

The petrol range starts off with the P300 2.0-litre petrol engine, which can put down 297bhp and achieve 0 to 62mph in 7.3 seconds. This engine returns between 25.2 and 34.9mpg. Next is the P400 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine with a mild hybrid system with a 48V electric motor that can put down a combined 395bhp and 550Nm of torque. The P400 engine returns between 27.9 and 29.4mpg and achieves 0 to 62mph in 5.7 seconds.

Also available is the P530 4.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 523bhp. This achieves 0 to 62mph in 4.5 seconds and returns around 24mpg. Stepping up in power, the P635 4.4-litre petrol engine puts down 626bhp and achieves 0 to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds. The P635 engine returns between 22.6 and 24.9mpg. This is the fastest engine available on a used Range Rover Sport.

Available on the SRV trim, the P575 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine puts down 567bhp and achieves 0 to 62mph in 4.5 seconds. This is available only on the Mk2 Range Rover Sport and returns between 18.9 and 19.3mpg.

Diesel engines include the D250 3.0-litre petrol engine that can put down 296bhp. This achieves 0 to 62mph in 8.5 seconds and returns between 29 and 40mpg. There is also a D300 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that can put down 296bhp with 48V mild-hybrid assistance that can put down a combined 297bhp and 650Nm of torque. The D300 engine achieves 0 to 62mph in 6.6 seconds and returns between 35.1 and 37.7mpg. On the Mk2, the D300 is available without the mild hybrid assistance and achieves 0 to 62mph in 7.3 seconds.

There is also the D350 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that is capable of 345bhp. This engine achieves 0 to 62mph in 6.9 seconds and returns between 35.1 to 36.4mpg.

Hybrid engines include, on the Mk2, the P400e 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to an electric motor that puts down a combined 398bhp and 640Nm of torque. This achieves 0 to 62mph in 6.7 seconds and can also travel 31 miles on electric only.

On the Mk3, there are two versions of hybrid engines. The P440e 3.0-litre petrol engine is mated to a 38.2kWh battery that can put down a combined 434bhp and 620Nm of torque. This achieves 0 to 62mph in 5.8 seconds. A step up from this is the P510e 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine with a 38.2kWh battery putting down a combined 503bhp and 700Nm of torque. This achieves 0 to 62mph in 5.2 seconds. Both the P440e and P510e can travel 70 miles on electric only.

Features you can expect to find in a Range Rover Sport

Interior

 

The interior of the Range Rover Sport is furnished with high-quality luxurious materials with a modern design.

In the centre of the dashboard is the infotainment screen. This can come in two sizes depending on the iteration of the vehicle; either a 10-inch screen before 2022 or 13.1-inch after 2022.

Before 2017, the infotainment system consisted of a singular 10-inch touchscreen display. On iterations between 2017 and 2022, the dashboard features a dual-screen infotainment system, as part of Land Rover’s Touch Pro Duo system. The top screen displays media, hands-free calling and navigation settings, while the bottom screen is used to control comfort functions such as climate control. After 2022, this was replaced with a singular 13.1-inch curved touchscreen display using the Pivi Pro system.

Other features that come with the infotainment system include an on-board Wi-Fi hotspot, a DAB radio as well as Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. An integrated sat nav comes as standard across all trims, as well as dual-zone climate control and heated front and rear seats. The Range Rover Sport can also come with Land Rover’s Meridian sound system providing good audio quality throughout the cabin.

This system can be controlled via the touchscreen interface or, on the pre-2022 system, a set of rotary dials to control either screen. On both systems, the menus are intuitive and feature helpful shortcut buttons on the side of the screen to make navigation quick and easy. There are also controls located on the steering wheel, so the driver does not have to look away from the road for long.

There is also a 13.7-inch digital instrument display, or 12.5-inch on iterations before 2022, which digitally displays traditional analogue dials such as the speedometer, fuel gauge and rev counter. This display can be customised to display a variety of other information. A head-up display can also feature, which projects driving information onto a small transparent panel in front of the driver.

The height of the Range Rover gives occupants plenty of headroom. There is also lots of legroom available, especially in the Mk3 with its wheelbase that is 64mm to 320mm longer than the Mk2. The high driving position gives drivers a wide view of the road ahead.

To add to the comfort of the vehicle, the Range Rover Sport can come with heated and cooled front and rear seats, as well as massaging seats, a heated steering wheel and climate control. Ambient LED lighting in the interior keeps the ambience pleasant.

When travelling, the cabin is kept quiet by the noise-damping materials to keep out unwanted road, wind and engine noise. Air suspension fitted to the vehicle helps reduce the impact of any bumps in the road.

Storage throughout the vehicle is good, keeping the cabin clutter-free. In the front, there is a good-sized glovebox that has two compartments to help keep it organised, two cup-holders on the central console that can be covered and in the front of the central console a smaller cubby for smartphones with charging points. The Range Rover Sport can also feature a central cooler cubby for keeping drinks cool. Door bins in the front and rear are a good size for water bottles and other personal belongings.

Technology

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport comes with a range of features to assist the driver. These include adaptive cruise control, which uses the range of sensors and cameras located around the car to adjust the speed of the car to maintain a safe distance from the car in front. Lane keep assist also features on the Range Rover Sport, preventing it from drifting off the road or into another lane. Matrix, Pixel or Pixel-Laser LED headlights can also feature, helping the driver to see further on the road at night and prevent other drivers from being dazzled by acting as a form of auto-dimming headlights. Other convenient features include remote locking and soft closing doors.

Safety

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport scored a full five stars on the Euro NCAP crash safety tests. It also scored well on adult and child occupant protection tests, scoring 85% for both. The Range Rover comes with a high score for safety assist with 82%, beating the Mercedes-Benz GLE which scored 78% and Audi Q7 with 72%.

Safety features on a used Range Rover Sport include automatic emergency braking system, front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree parking camera. To help with off-road driving, the Range Rover Sport can come with all-wheel drive supported by traction control which helps the driver maintain control over different terrains. Terrain Response also helps with going off-road by adjusting the performance of the car depending on the type of terrain it is on. Blind spot monitoring also comes with the vehicle, alerting drivers of potential hazards such as other vehicles or cyclists in the blind spots of the car. There are two ISOFIX anchor points installed as standard on the outermost rear seats to securely attach child seats.

The HSE trim is the entry-level trim for the Mk2 Range Rover Sport. In the interior, this trim adds ambient LED lighting, Windsor leather heated front seats, heated rear seats, heated windscreen, climate control and a dual-view infotainment system with a Meridian sound system. On the exterior, the HSE trim adds Matrix LED headlights, animated directional indicators, a rear camera and front fog lights. Other features include cruise control, 20-inch alloy wheels and power fold heated door mirrors.

Range Rover Sport SE

The SE trim is the entry-level trim for the Mk3 Range Rover Sport. Range Rover Sport Autobiography

The Autobiography trim adds a host of extra features to the Range Rover Sport. In the interior, features include a powered sunroof, heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, heated leather steering wheel, suede cloth upholstery, three- or four-zone climate control and a central cooler compartment. On the exterior, features include 22-inch or 21-inch alloy wheels, a 360-degree parking camera and power fold heated door mirrors. Range Rover Sport SVR

The SVR trim is the flagship trim for the Mk2 Range Rover Sport. This includes premium features on the inside, such as Windsor leather SVR branded heated sports seats, an SVR branded heated steering wheel and brushed aluminium highlights. On the exterior, pixel LED headlights, sports suspension, active exhaust system and a body-coloured carbon fibre bonnet.

Range Rover Sport First Edition

The First Edition is the flagship trim for the Mk3 Range Rover Sport. This trim adds some First Edition branded features as well as 23-inch alloy wheels.
