What is the BMW 1 Series M135i?

First launched in 2012, the BMW 1 Series M135i is a performance version of the BMW 1 Series hatchback. Popular among thrill seekers and petrolheads, it offers more power than its regular 1 Series counterpart, as well as finely tuned suspension and a range of driving modes.

Endowed with a powerful turbocharged petrol engine and rear-wheel drive, the first generation is a true driver’s car. If you’re looking for a model that can get you from 0-62mph in just 4.8 seconds while remaining comfortable and practical, the M135i should certainly be on your shortlist.

The BMW 1 Series M135i is a hatchback, available in three and five-door body styles. Key competitors include the Audi S3 and Volkswagen Golf R. It continued until 2016 when it was replaced by the M140i. A new generation of the M135i emerged in 2019, boasting BMW’s trademark xDrive all-wheel drive setup. This sends power to all four wheels, although it’s front-dominant, never delivering more than 50% of torque to the rear wheels.

BMW 1 Series M135i history

The BMW 1 Series first launched in 2004, entering what was then the most competitive car segment of all. Designed to replace the 3 Series Compact, it remained true to the brand’s ethos of producing the ‘ultimate driving machine’. As such, it shunned the conventional front-wheel drivetrain, instead incorporating a front-mounted engine to drive the rear wheels.

The 1 Series saw great success in the UK, and it was towards the end of its first generation – in 2012 – that the model was joined by the M135i. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in five-door format, it garnered immediate attention as a compact car with impressive power. The three-door iteration was launched at the Geneva Motor Show just a few months later, with the model marking the beginning of the German manufacturer’s M Performance sub-brand.

A 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine lay under the bonnet, producing 315bhp and getting from 0-62mph in just 4.8 seconds. A choice of manual or automatic transmission was available too. A year after its launch, the M135i was updated. Automatic headlights and wipers moved off the options list and onto the standard equipment list. In 2014 a new steering wheel and new tyre pressure and temperature sensors were fitted. Bluetooth was also added to enable music streaming, and an SOS button augmented the safety kit.

A final facelift occurred in 2015, bringing LED headlights, a standard ‘full black’ instrument panel and added storage in the cabin. The engine was also boosted by 5bhp and the drive modes received some refinement. This accentuated the difference between Comfort and Sport settings.

The first iteration of the M135i saw its final year of production in 2016, after which it made way for the M140i. Then in 2019 it re-emerged with significant differences from the previous model. Not only did it boast BMW’s xDrive technology, making it an all-wheel drive car with a front-wheel bias, but it was also given a 2.0-litre engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Although smaller, this still delivers 306bhp and 450Nm of torque, maintaining its predecessor’s 4.8-second 0-62mph time.

Where does the BMW 1 Series M135i sit in the range?

The BMW 1 Series M135i marked the inception of the manufacturer’s M Performance sub-brand. It acts as a top-of-the-range 1 Series, boasting greater power, swifter acceleration and a more responsive drive. Many used M135i models also feature the optional Adaptive M Sport Suspension, which delivers a sportier feel thanks to tighter body control and more precise steering.

What features and equipment does the BMW 1 Series M135i have?

There’s a 380-litre boot at your disposal and the cabin features supportive seating. The BMW iDrive infotainment system includes a 10.3-inch touchscreen, voice control and a rotary dial. These methods of operation provide access to DAB radio, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

The 2019 M135i is fitted with new software for the traction control and torque steer compensation system for sharper handling. The augmented engine noise has also been upgraded, producing a sense of drama as you accelerate.

Alongside 18-inch alloy wheels, there’s a prominent grille, a rear spoiler, M exhaust system and M Sport brakes with blue callipers, all of which set the model apart. Inside you’ll find dual-zone climate control, heated front sports seats and Anthracite headlining. Driver assistance features include cruise control, launch control and lane departure warning.
