Close up of badging on the white BMW i4

The BMW i4 is a fully electric executive car. It boasts a stylish interior and offers good performance. As is typical of a BMW, the i4 handles well and provides a long range of up to 360 miles on a single charge. The BMW i4 won the Auto Express Premium Electric Car of the Year award in both 2022 and 2023 thanks to its high-performance and good value for money.

The BMW i4 competes with other premium electric cars, including the Tesla Model 3, the Polestar 2 and the Hyundai Ioniq 6. The BMW i4 was launched in 2021 as BMW’s contribution to the growing electric car market. Available with two hybrid powertrains, the i4 was designed to be a sporty and stylish car and includes plenty of digital technology.

Practicality and style of the car

The i4 offers a 470-litre boot, which is large for its class. This can be expanded by folding down the rear seats for up to 1,290 litres of space. The i4 offers around 200 litres more space than the Polestar 2 with its 1,095 litres. With the rear seats in place, the BMW i4 still outcompetes its rivals, with the Hyundai Ioniq 6 offering 401 litres and the Tesla Model 3 offering 425 litres.

The hatchback-style tailgate opens to reveal a wide loading space, making it easy to lift large items in and out of the boot. On the side of the boot wall is a storage net for small items such as safety equipment. The loading lip is low, making loading and unloading heavy items easier. The outermost rear seats come with ISOFIX anchor points for securing child seats.

For transporting larger items or towing a caravan, the i4’s electric motors can tow up to 1,600kg.

Running costs

The BMW i4 falls into insurance groups 35 to 43. As it is an electric car, it benefits from having no additional costs from road tax. In comparison, the Polestar 2 and Hyundai Ioniq 6 fall into a similar insurance group bracket as the i4, but the Tesla Model 3 falls into the higher bracket of 48 to 50.

How a used BMW i4 drives

There are three electric powertrains available on the BMW i4. With a range of up to 352 miles on a single charge, the BMW i4 has a larger range than the Hyundai Ioniq 6 which can do up to 340 miles, allowing drivers to go further without worrying about looking for the next charging point.

The entry-level BMW i4 eDrive30 puts down 335bhp and 400Nm of torque. It can achieve 0 to 62mph in 6 seconds. The 70kWh battery offers a range of between 277 and 288 miles before it needs to be recharged, which at a public 50kW charger takes around 1 hour and 14 minutes.

The eDrive40 delivers 335bhp and 430Nm of torque, achieving 0 to 62mph in 5.7 seconds. Thanks to a larger 83.9kWh battery, this powertrain has a range between 337 and 352 miles before the battery needs to be recharged. This takes around 1 hour 23 minutes at a public 50kW charger.

The M50 powertrain generates 537bhp and 795Nm of torque, allowing it to achieve 0 to 62mph in 3.9 seconds. It also has an 83.9kWh battery, offering a range of between 258 and 318 miles. This means it takes around 1 hour and 23 minutes to be fully recharged. The M50 comes with four-wheel drive, which helps to deliver full power to all four wheels for better control.

Features you can expect in a BMW i4

The BMW i4 is a modern and stylish car that features a distinctive front grille as well as blue highlights on the side of the vehicle that helps it to give a sporty look.

Interior

Inside, drivers will find plenty of high-quality materials and finishes that give the i4 an upmarket look and feel. Passengers will find themselves very comfortable in the cabin of the i4. With plenty of legroom and headroom, even rear passengers receive a good amount of space. The i4 can comfortably fit four adults with ease.

Comfort is enhanced through the handling and performance of the car on the road. Long journeys are made relaxing through the precise steering and air suspension that smooths out rough roads. As a result of the batteries being placed lower down in the vehicle, the i4 remains stable when going around corners.

Up front, storage spaces in the i4 include a good-sized glovebox, a cubby under the central armrest, a pair of cup holders under a sliding lid and a front central cubby that could be used for storing smartphones and other personal items when driving. Front and rear door bins provide a good space to store water bottles or other small personal items. Also, in the rear, there are map pocket nets located on the back of the front seats that can be used to store entertainment devices.

Technology

BMW i4 interior front seats, centre console and gear selector, dashboard, steering wheel and infotainment screen

On the dashboard, drivers will find a sweeping curved display. This houses two screens, a 14.8-inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, alongside each other.

The infotainment display uses BMW’s iDrive 8 system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Navigating the menu is easy and intuitive as a result of the touchscreen interface, shortcut buttons and click-wheel navigation tools. Voice and gesture control can also be used when operating the infotainment screen. Other features that come include integrated sat nav with 3D mapping, 5G connectivity and automatic air conditioning.

The 12.3-inch digital instrument display has clear graphics that display the traditional speedometer, fuel gauge and rev counter on the screen, along with other information if desired. A head-up display also features on the top of the dashboard to help keep the driver's eyes on the road.

The BMW i4 comes with a range of features that are designed to assist the driver on the road. These include lane keep assist and lane departure warning, which uses sensors on the car to prevent it from drifting out of the lane. When the vehicle approaches the edge of the lane or when the car switches lanes it alerts the driver so they can take corrective measures. The i4 can also come with adaptative cruise control with stop and go, which uses radar technology to maintain a safe distance from the car in front and can even stop and go in traffic.

Other driver assistance features include a reversing camera, which helps the driver avoid collisions, and traffic light detection, which decelerates the vehicle when it detects a red light ahead.

Safety

Achieving four out of five stars on the Euro NCAP safety tests, the BMW i4 also scored well on adult and child occupant protection, securing 87% on both. This score matches that of the child protection score on the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and beats that score given to the Tesla Model 3 with 86%. The BMW i4 also scored 71% on pedestrian protection, in comparison to the Hyundai Ioniq 6 which scored 66%.

Safety features on the i4 include autonomous emergency braking, which is fitted as standard, as well as an active bonnet, which helps to protect pedestrians in a collision by releasing the bonnet to increase the distance from hard structures in the engine compartment.

Other features include evasion assist. Thanks to sensors around the car, this system helps the driver make evasive manoeuvres by directing the vehicle towards a safe space. For protection in the rear of the vehicle, rear collision prevention alerts the driver of an oncoming vehicle so they can make manoeuvres to avoid the collision. If it is unavoidable, side windows are closed automatically to help protect those inside. A rear cross-traffic warning system also helps to prevent collision by warning drivers of oncoming vehicles when reversing.
