For used BMW iX1 cars, choose Arnold Clark

The BMW iX1 represents a major milestone in the luxury electric vehicle market. It blend the brand's iconic design language with cutting-edge technology. The model provides a familiar yet innovative experience for eco-conscious drivers. As BMW's entry-level EV, it competes with premium rivals such as the Mercedes EQA, Audi Q4 e-tron, and Volvo XC40 Recharge.

The BMW i3 was a standalone electric model. Unlike its predecessor, , the iX1 has been developed to essentially be an electrified version of the already popular BMW X1 SUV. This makes the iX1 is the ideal choice for those looking to make the transition from electric from petrol or diesel vehicles.

While it offers an exterior design that is enough to catch the eye, the model’s interior elevates its overall appeal. The cabin exudes a premium feel throughout, featuring an infotainment setup that rivals those found in BMW's flagship models. The vehicle provides ample space for families and has a boot that is almost as large as the regular BMW X1. The placement of batteries under the floor also allows for a higher seating position, a feature that SUV drivers have come to expect.

While the iX1 faces competition from various other electric SUVs, its blend of subtle design, premium interior, and impressive performance make it one of the most desirable options in its class.

BMW iX1 updates and facelifts

The BMW iX1 was introduced as an all-electric iteration of the popular X1 SUV in 2022. In autumn 2023 a new entry-level variant – the xDrive20 – went on sale. With a single electric motor, it offers a range of up to 296 miles and can accelerate from 0–62mph in 8.6 seconds.

Practicality and style of the car

The BMW iX1 boasts an impressive 490-litre boot capacity. This outclasses competitors like the Mercedes EQA and the Volvo XC40 Recharge. This generous space makes it a practical choice for families and individuals alike, offering ample room for shopping, school bags, holiday luggage or even outdoor gear. The boot also features a convenient underfloor compartment, perfect for storing a charging cable or other small items.

The iX1 rear seats feature a 40:20:40-split design that can be folded down to expand the luggage capacity to a cavernous 1,495 litres. While the seats don't fold completely flat, they do provide a substantial amount of space for transporting large items. The boot area also has a low lip, making it easier to load heavy or bulky items, making the BMW iX1 the ultimate combination of style and practicality.

Running costs

The BMW iX1 is exempt from road tax as well as the London Congestion Charge until 2025, resulting in significant savings for those who frequently drive in the city or are looking to reduce their annual motoring expenses. Insurance-wise, the iX1 falls into group 37 out of 50 if you opt for the base xLine model. If you're eyeing the sportier M Sport variants, these land in insurance group 38. Premiums are comparable to those of other electric SUVs in the market, including the dual-motor versions of the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Volvo XC40 Recharge.

How a used BMW iX1 drives

The first BMW iX1 to grace the UK market was the xDrive30. This model has two electric motors boasting a combined output of 308bhp and 494Nm of torque. This delivers a 0–62mph acceleration time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 112mph. Activate the bonus 'boost' mode via a paddle behind the steering wheel, and get an extra burst of speed for up to 10 seconds.

When it comes to efficiency, the iX1 has been developed to provide an impressive 272-mile* range. Charging is quick with compatibility up to 130kW charging speeds. As such, if you find yourself at an ultra-rapid DC charging point, you can top up the battery from 10 to 80% in as little as 29 minutes. Charging at home comes via a standard 7.4kW wallbox and takes approximately 10.5 hours.

In autumn 2023, the xDrive20 joined the range. Sharing the xDrive30’s 64.7kWh battery, it comes with a single electric motor on the front axle. Producing 204bhp and 247Nm of torque, it takes you from 0–62mph in 8.6 seconds and delivers a range of up to 296 miles*.

Features you can expect in a BMW iX1

Interior

Step into the BMW iX1 and you'll immediately notice the spacious and premium ambience that defines the interior. The floating centre console works to provide an 'open plan' feel, making the front area expansive and inviting. The dashboard epitomises modern design and features a curved panel that incorporates displays for both the instrument cluster and infotainment controls.

Front occupants benefit from plenty of head and legroom, and the elevated ride height provides the driver with a clear view of the road ahead. The rear seats offer ample legroom too. There are also reclining backrests for extra comfort. Storage comes in the form of a pair of deep cup holders and generously sized door bins at the front of the cabin, as well as a shelf beneath the floating console.

High-quality materials are used throughout, with hard plastics strategically located to withstand the wear and tear of daily use. Light-coloured wood options are available to brighten the cabin too.

Technology

A state-of-the-art infotainment system comes with a 10.7-inch touchscreen display. There is a 10.25-inch digital driver display behind the steering wheel. Both screens are slightly curved and encased in a single pane of glass.. The system runs on BMW's latest iDrive 8 operating system, and features large, logical tile shortcuts that make navigation simple. With BMW iDrive you can use voice commands, which are activated by saying 'Hey BMW.' Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard features, making complete smartphone integration easy.

Setting the perfect environment throughout is straightforward. The climate control functions are incorporated into the touchscreen interface to make adjusting the settings quick and intuitive.

Safety

The BMW iX1 sets a high standard for safety, a fact underscored by its maximum five-star rating from Euro NCAP. The vehicle excelled in the adult and child occupant protection categories, scoring 86% and 89% respectively. It even received an exceptional 92% for safety assistance technology.

The iX1 comes equipped with lane-keeping assistance to ensure it stays in its lane on the motorway. It has adaptive cruise control to maintain a safe distance from the car ahead. The intelligent Reversing Assistant is one standout feature and can remember the previous 50 metres of steering input and retrace them in reverse – perfect for navigating out of tight parking spaces. Additional features like a reversing camera, an attentiveness assistant that suggests when you should take a break, and BMW's Active Guard system all contribute to a comprehensive safety package.

An optional 'Driving Assistant Professional' pack is also available on selected pre-owned models. This includes advanced features such as cross-traffic warning, lane-change warning, rear collision prevention, and steering and lane control assistant. The iX1 also takes pedestrian safety into account. It emits a distinctive sound at low speeds to alert those nearby. The rear outer seats come equipped with ISOFIX child seat mounting points, making the iX1 a family-friendly choice.
