What is the BMW X3 M Sport?

A refined mid-size SUV, the BMW X3 is a five-seat vehicle aimed at families and those looking to take their adventures further afield. With rugged, off-road looks, powerful engines and a high-quality cabin, it has everything you could hope for in a luxury SUV. The M Sport trim sits above the xLine variant and provides a sportier aesthetic thanks to M aerodynamic body styling, gloss black roof rails and an M Sport leather steering wheel. It also offers an additional engine option in the form of a 3.0-litre 286bhp diesel.

In the BMW SUV range, the X3 is larger than the compact X1 but smaller than the X5 and X7. Competition for the X3 M Sport is strong, with rivals coming from all corners of the globe. These include the Lexus NX 300h AWD, the Audi Q5 Black Edition, the Mercedes-Benz GLC 4MATIC and the Land Rover Discovery Dynamic SE.

BMW X3 M Sport history

When the BMW X3 launched in 2003 it more or less occupied a class of its own. At the time, critics struggled to understand the necessity of a smaller SUV, but given the level of competition it now faces, the X3 was arguably ahead of its time. Available with four diesel engines, the M Sport variant topped the range.

The second generation X3 arrived in November 2010 with only one diesel engine and one trim level. However, in March 2011 the M Sport trim was introduced, boasting a more athletic appearance and sportier handling. It remained the highest specified option until June 2014, when a raft of other trims joined the lineup, including the M Sport Plus. From 2014, it came with 19-inch alloy wheels, sports seats, aluminium trim, Performance Control and M Sport suspension.

As with its predecessor, the Mk2 BMW X3 M Sport offered a choice of four engines, all of which were diesel powered. These ranged from the rear-wheel drive 18d – a 2.0-litre 141bhp unit – to the all-wheel drive 35d, a 3.0-litre 309bhp option.

The X3 entered its third generation in 2018, this time with only four-wheel drive variants available. Once again, the M Sport topped the lineup, but was positioned below the more powerful M40d and M40i variants. These stand slightly apart from the rest of the range, offering only one engine option each and a unique specification.

The Mk3 X3 M Sport has four engine options including, for the first time, petrol and plug-in hybrid units. The entry-level 2.0-litre 184bhp petrol can reach 62mph from a standstill in just 8.3 seconds. In 2021, this engine received mild hybrid technology, making it more economical. The 2.0-litre diesel 190bhp engine boasts a 0-62mph acceleration time of 7.9 seconds and is also equipped with mild hybrid technology.

Opt for the 3.0-litre 286bhp mild hybrid engine for even more potent performance and a 0-62mph time of 5.8 seconds. Cleanest of all is the plug-in hybrid, which pairs a 2.0-litre petrol engine with a 108bhp electric motor. With a combined output of 288bhp, it can cover 30 miles on electric power alone, and gets from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds.

Where does the BMW X3 M Sport sit in the range?

In both the second and third generations of the BMW X3, the M Sport was a high-spec variant. From 2014, it was positioned below the M Sport Plus, with the Plus bringing a few extra luxuries. The M Sport remained above the SE, SE Plus and xLine trims. From 2018, the M Sport has sat above the SE and xLine grades, but below the standalone M40d and M40i options. As such it can be considered the pinnacle of the standard lineup.

What features and equipment does the X3 M Sport have?

BMW X3 M Sport trims come equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels, gloss black roof rails and M aerodynamic body styling. Inside you’ll find an M Sport leather-trimmed steering wheel and Vernasca leather upholstery, as well as three-zone climate control and ambient lighting.

From 2018 to 2022 the M Sport featured a 10.5-inch display, which offered access to DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and sat nav. A rear-view camera was also included. When the X3 was updated in 2022, this was replaced with a 12.3-inch touchscreen with improved clarity and resolution.

Boot space for the X3 M Sport is 450 to 550 litres depending on the engine type you choose. All powertrains enable you to tow up to 2,000kg.
