What is the Ford Fiesta ST-2?
One of Ford’s most iconic cars, the Fiesta ST hot hatch is a high-performance variant of the popular Fiesta supermini. The American brand is known for its ability to deliver a dynamic drive, and the ST optimises this to provide a more powerful, responsive experience than ever. The ST moniker arrived in 2005, standing for ‘Sports Technologies’, and has since become synonymous with the best of the manufacturer’s engineering.
Hot hatch credentials aside, the Fiesta ST is as practical as the regular hatchback. Available in three and five-door formats, it appeals to younger motorists and families, as well as to those for whom performance is a priority. Key rivals include the Volkswagen Polo GTI, Peugeot 208 GT and Hyundai i20 N.
The ST-2 boasts all the trimmings of a sporty car, including twin tailpipes, Recaro sports front seats and a selection of drive modes. If you’re looking for an athletic and fun vehicle with all the essentials covered, look no further than the ST-2 grade.
Ford Fiesta ST-2 history
The Ford Fiesta arrived on British roads in the 1970s and performance editions – such as the XR2 and XR2i – have always been a key part of the range. It wasn’t until 2005, however, that the ST badge made its debut, and with it a hot hatch that really began to turn heads.
The first Fiesta ST was the most powerful that Ford had ever produced, boasting a 2.0-litre 150bhp petrol engine. Its striking design, precise handling and reasonable price tag soon earned it a committed following, cementing its place at the forefront of the hot hatch market. In 2013, the Mk2 ST arrived, equipped with a smaller yet more potent 1.6-litre 197bhp engine, which could get from 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds. Available in three and five-door body styles, it held even wider appeal. Trims included the ST, ST-2 and ST-3. The ST-2 built on the entry-level ST grade, adding heated seats, a Sony stereo and a four-inch display on the dashboard.
The third-generation Fiesta ST launched in 2018. Standing apart from the regular Fiesta, it features red ST badging on the honeycomb grille, a unique alloy wheel design and twin tailpipes with chrome accents. A new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine replaces the 1.6-litre option, offering the same power output while reducing emissions. Delivering Ford’s trademark dynamism, it accelerates from 0-62mph in just 6.5 seconds. Key features included the Ford SYNC 3 infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen, and three different drive modes: Normal, Sport and Track.
Where does the Ford Fiesta ST-2 sit in the range?
From 2013 , the ST-2 has served as the middle trim level of the Ford Fiesta ST. It provides buyers with a mid-point between the ST and ST-3, building on the spec of the former while keeping things simpler than the latter.
What features and equipment does a Ford Fiesta ST-2 have?
The Mk3 Ford Fiesta ST-2 boasts all the styling and tech elements you could wish for in a hot hatch. Its unique 17-inch alloy wheels are complemented by LED headlights, sporty bumpers, a honeycomb grille with ST badging, privacy glass, and twin tailpipes with a chrome finish.
Inside are Recaro heated front sports seats, which enhance the dynamic feel of the driving experience, and a flat-bottomed steering wheel gives the driver more space. Air conditioning keeps the cabin at the perfect temperature, and infotainment is delivered by the SYNC 3 system, controlled by an eight-inch touchscreen. Bluetooth, DAB radio, smartphone mirroring and sat nav feature as standard. As a practical option too, the ST-2 offers 292 litres of boot space and folding rear seats that increase luggage capacity further. The outer rear seats also have ISOFIX mounting points for the secure anchoring of child seats.
Three selectable drive modes enable you to optimise your drive according to your preferences or the road conditions. Choose Normal for relaxed, everyday driving, Sport for enhanced responsiveness, and Track to switch off the traction control for unbridled fun. Other technology includes cruise control and a lane keep alert system.
