For used Ford Mustang cars, choose Arnold Clark

One of the most iconic and recognisable cars on the road, the Ford Mustang is a powerful, sporty coupé that never fails to turn heads. It first went on sale in 1964 but didn’t arrive on UK shores until January 2015. As such, it’s the sixth generation that made its debut here. It launched with two engine options, one trim and two body styles: a fastback (coupé) and a convertible.

Ford Mustang updates and facelifts

In 2023, the Mustang entered its seventh generation. Built on the same platform as its predecessor, it also comes in coupé and convertible body types, with the same powerful 2.3-litre and 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine options. There are a range of trims to choose from, including the Standard Trim, GT and the Mustang Mach 1.

As an American muscle car, the Mustang has few direct rivals in the European market. The Lexus RC F is a V8 coupé competitor and the Toyota GR Supra can compete on sports car performance. In 2023, the model was named Most Fun Car to Drive by Auto Trader.

In 2018, the Ford Mustang was updated. The top-of-the-range V8 engine was given a power boost and the automatic gearbox became a ten-speed unit. Fresh paint colours were also offered.

Practicality and style of the car

The Ford Mustang is larger than sports cars such as the Audi TT and BMW 2 Series, which means four occupants can travel in comfort. Head and legroom are generous for front occupants, but the coupé roofline means headroom is slightly restricted for rear passengers. The Mustang is ideally suited to carrying children or teens in the back. There are ISOFIX anchor points for those needing to fit car seats too.

In-cabin storage is good too, with door bins, a glovebox and a small cubby in the front armrest. If you’re bringing drinks along for the ride, the two deep cup holders between the front seats can accommodate them.

With a practical boot measuring 332 litres in the convertible and 408 litres in the coupé, the Ford Mustang can carry all the everyday essentials. Shopping, a set of golf clubs and gym bags will fit easily into either variant, while the coupé can carry a pair of medium-sized suitcases. If you do require extra room, the rear seats fold with a 50/50 split. The boot is accessible by pressing the key fob twice or using a button on the dashboard, making it easier to load up if you have your hands full.

Running costs

As a sports car with considerable power, the Ford Mustang occupies groups 41–46 out of 50 for insurance. This is more affordable than the Lexus RC F Coupé, which falls into groups 45–50.

There are several Mustang variants that are relatively inexpensive to tax, incurring a flat rate of £180 each year. Those produced before April 2017 have varying premiums, while those with an original list price of over £40,000 are taxed at £570 for the first five years after initial renewal. Thereafter, the charge drops to the standard £180 annually.

How a used Ford Mustang drives

Muscle cars require powerful engines, and the Ford Mustang has two on offer. The first is a 2.3-litre 313bhp EcoBoost petrol unit developing 432Nm of torque. Cars manufactured before May 2018 come with either six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Thereafter, the automatic gearbox is a ten-speed unit. Choose this engine and you’ll get from 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds and achieve an efficiency of up to 35.3mpg on the combined cycle.

For the ultimate in performance, opt for the 5.0-litre V8 petrol, which has an output of 444bhp and 529Nm of torque. This will take you from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds and returns a combined fuel economy of up to 23.5mpg in automatic guise. Both options have a rear-wheel drivetrain.

Those looking for a car they can have fun with on the track can opt for the Mach 1 variant. This retains the 5.0-litre V8 engine, but it boosts power to 454bhp and is paired with the six-speed manual gearbox. Boasting a top speed of 166mph, it can reach 62mph from a standstill in just in 4.4 seconds while offering up to 20.9mpg.

Features you can expect in a Ford Mustang

Interior

Behind the wheel, the Mustang is everything you’d expect from a big, bold sports car. The Mk6 edition, manufactured between 2015 and 2022, mixes retro touches with modern technology to create a fun and charismatic drive. The three-spoke steering wheel features the Mustang logo, and there’s a plaque on the passenger’s side of the dash proclaiming, ‘Since 1964’.

The rotary controls add to the nostalgic feel, yet they sit seamlessly alongside contemporary elements such as the red-ringed starter button. The Mk7, manufactured post-2023, has a more modern feel, with a flat-bottomed steering wheel and fewer buttons and switches on the centre console.

Mk6 editions come with the Ford SYNC 3 infotainment system, which enables you to access media via an eight-inch touchscreen. DAB radio, Bluetooth and a USB socket all come as standard, as well as voice control. Some used Mustang cars may feature the optional Shaker sound system, which adds extra bass to your audio.

The Mk7 edition was updated to feature the SYNC 4 infotainment system. Functions are operated via a 13.2-inch touchscreen, and all variants have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included as standard. The car also integrates with the FordPass smartphone app, enabling you to check on your vehicle remotely.

Technology

From the 2018 update onwards, the Mustang boasts six driving modes: Normal, Sport, Slippery, Drag, Track and a fully customisable option called MyMode. These adjust the car’s throttle, steering and stability control according to conditions and driver preference. There’s also the handy Ford MyKey technology, which enables you to programme your spare key fob(s) with speed limits, restrictions on audio volume and more, ensuring the car is driven responsibly by others.

The majority of the Mustang’s technology concerns its driving dynamics. The GT and Mach 1 editions of the Mk7 model feature a Performance pack as standard. This adds high-performance Brembo brakes as well as a limited-slip differential, which provides more control over power delivery, enhancing performance and handling.

Safety

The Ford Mustang was tested by Euro NCAP in 2017, and it boasts a rating of three stars with a score of 72% for adult occupant protection. In addition to front and side airbags, it features ISOFIX child seat mounting points on the two rear seats, as well as an active bonnet. This raises in the event of a collision with a pedestrian to better absorb the impact and protect the pedestrian. Additional active systems include autonomous emergency braking and lane assist.
