Honda overview

In 1946, Soichiro Honda had the idea of using engines to power bicycles. Over the next year he produced and sold some 500 units, using generator engines that traditionally powered wireless radios. When his stock ran out, he developed his own engine, the A-Type. In 1948, the Honda Motor Company was founded, operating out of a small factory based in Hamamatsu, Japan.

Over the following decade, Honda (pronounced HON-duh) continued to create engines for bicycles and farming equipment, as well as developing motorcycles and scooters. It expanded into the USA in 1959. The 1960s saw it enter the automobile industry, where it continued to innovate. The brand is responsible not only for the first in-car navigation systems, but also the first Franz system, which facilitated driving for those with leg and arm disabilities.

Honda’s car range is one of the greenest available, with every model except the Civic Type R being offered in electric or hybrid format. Drivers can expect diverse model options, from the compact and city-friendly Honda e to the spacious and practical CR-V SUV. The 10-millionth Honda vehicle rolled off the production lines in 2016.

Popular Honda models

The Honda Civic has become something of an icon, having first launched in 1972 and evolved through nine subsequent generations. It has appeared in several guises on UK roads, including hatchback, estate and saloon body styles, the performance Type R format, and with petrol, diesel and hybrid engines. Each iteration offers a spacious interior, dynamic styling and a generous level of equipment. The Mk10 edition alone sold over 112,000 units between 2018 and 2021.

The Honda Jazz has a reputation for practicality and reliability. With its intuitive cabin layout and ‘Magic Seats’, it’s notable for its flexibility and convenience. A selection of punchy engines is available on the Jazz, with each ensuring a smooth drive. First released in 2001, this five-door supermini was made available with a hybrid powertrain in 2011 for cleaner motoring and is ideal for urban living. A Crosstar trim was introduced on the Honda Jazz in 2020 and features a raised ride height, body cladding and roof rails.

First launched in 1998 and then returning in 2015, the Honda HR-V is a smart compact SUV with a stylish character. It offers plenty of space for families, a practical boot and impressive towing abilities that saw it winning in the Under 1,400kg category at the 2016 Tow Car of the Year Awards. In line with Honda’s goal of delivering a completely electrified range, it is available with hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines as well as traditional petrol and diesel options.

A five-seat mid-size SUV, the Honda CR-V has been part of the manufacturer’s lineup since 1997. It immediately garnered critical acclaim thanks to its efficiency and reliability. A range of hybrid engines is available, as well as front and four-wheel drivetrains. The CR-V is well equipped and safe too, making it ideal for families and those who want to tow caravans or trailers.

Manufacturer awards

Honda has attained an extensive list of accolades for both its motorcycles and its cars. The manufacturer itself has picked up numerous accolades for its reliability and customer service. In the 2022 Auto Express Driver Power survey, which is the biggest of its kind in the UK, Honda took the Best Dealer title. UK Customers also nominated it for a Motor Ombudsman’s Customer Service Star Award in 2021. In terms of innovation, 2023 saw a Honda engineer receive the highest honour in engineering excellence from the US Government, for his work in airbag technology.

The Civic, Jazz and Honda e models all received awards between 2021 and 2023 from top publications such as What Car?, Top Gear and Carwow. In 2022 the HR-V received a Red Dot Design Award, and the following year the legendary Civic Type R was named Carwow’s Most Anticipated Car of 2023.
