For used Jeep Compass cars, choose Arnold Clark

When it launched in 2007, the Jeep Compass represented the iconic brand’s first foray into the ‘soft-roader’ market. This catered to people looking for a smaller SUV that could handle the urban jungle while maintaining some off-road capability. The Compass was instantly recognisable as a Jeep thanks to its seven-bar grille but the model put a greater focus on comfort.

Jeep Compass updates and facelifts

The Mk1 received a substantial update in 2011, which gave it a smarter cabin and some new equipment. It continued to provide an attractive alternative to the Ford Kuga until 2014, when it was retired. Following a brief hiatus, the Mk2 arrived in late 2017. With its modern styling, which embraces Jeep’s off-road roots, and its exceptional level of comfort and safety equipment, it’s a more attractive proposition than ever. It’s built on an extended version of the Jeep Renegade’s platform, meaning it offers more interior space.

The Mk2 Jeep Compass received a facelift in 2021, which brought some exterior design tweaks, including full LED headlamps as standard across the range. More notable was the interior refresh, which gave the model a more prestige feel. A new 10.1-inch touchscreen became the focal point of a revised dash design, and the Uconnect 5 infotainment system was brought in, providing a more responsive experience.

Initially available with two petrol and three diesel engines, the Compass’ later iterations boast greener powertrains: one petrol, one mild hybrid and one plug-in hybrid. Five trims include Sport, Longitude, Night Eagle, Limited and Trailhawk.

The Compass has plenty of competition from models such as the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Volvo XC40 and the Honda CR-V, but none of these really match it for all-terrain prowess. This is a true crossover, being compact and nimble enough to tackle the demands of everyday life while retaining an adventurous spirit with the ability to go almost anywhere.

Practicality and style of the car

Jeep Compass buyers have one option of a five-door body style, which aligns with the brand’s emphasis on practicality. Access is easy, particularly if you’re travelling with young children – the wide-opening doors make it simple to get them in and secured in their child seats. There are ISOFIX anchor points on each outer rear seat.

If you’re travelling with adults, they’ll have plenty of room to stretch out. The front and rear compartments both offer generous legroom, while the vehicle’s high roofline means there’s ample headroom.

Boot space is equally impressive, with 438 cubic litres at your disposal with all seats in place. This beats the Ford Kuga’s 412 litres and is on a par with the cargo volume offered by the Nissan Qashqai and Volvo XC40. The rear seats also split 60/40 or 40/20/40 depending on the variant you choose. As a result, its maximum capacity reaches 1,387 litres. If you have a little less to carry and an eco-conscious mindset, the plug-in hybrid Compass 4xe will suit your needs. This provides 420 cubic litres of luggage space and boasts a raised boot floor, which makes loading bulky items easy.

The Jeep Compass is a good choice for those in need of a tow car. Able to pull a maximum of 1,500kg, it has a solid, stable feel when coupled to a caravan or trailer. It also has a trailer stability system to help prevent trailers from snaking.

Running costs

Despite its comfy cabin and off-road abilities, the Jeep Compass can be more cost-effective to run than many of its rivals. All but the plug-in hybrid variants sit between groups 16–23 out of 50 for insurance, with PHEVs occupying groups 31–33. Comparatively, all but the most basic Volvo XC40 grades sit in groups 22–33, and the Honda CR-V occupies groups 22–25.

It’s a similar story for road tax – most Compass variants incur the annual rate of £180, while PHEVs, due to their higher list price, are taxed at £560 for the first five years that the road tax is renewed.

How a used Jeep Compass drives

The Jeep Compass’ engine choices depend on the model year you choose. When the Mk2 edition was launched, it came with petrol and diesel options. The petrol engines are both 1.4-litre units with outputs of 138bhp and 168bhp. The lower-powered option is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, develops 230Nm of torque and comes with front-wheel drive, returning 36.7mpg. The stronger engine is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, develops 250Nm and has four-wheel drive, returning between 30.4 and 30.7 mpg. Both accelerate from 0-62mph in 9.8 seconds.

The diesel offerings include a 1.6-litre 118bhp, which produces 320Nm of torque and comes with a six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive. This is the most efficient of the original lineup, returning a combined fuel economy of up to 45.6mpg. Choose the 2.0-litre option for outputs of either 138bhp or 168bhp and four-wheel drive. When paired with automatic transmission, this engine returns 50mpg and takes you from 0-62mph in just 9.5 seconds.

Later, the diesel engines were dropped from the lineup in favour of hybrid options. The petrol was also replaced with a 1.3-litre 128bhp unit mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. It reaches 62mph from a standstill in 10.3 seconds and returns a combined fuel economy of 33.6mpg.

The petrol mild hybrid engine was introduced in 2022, and teams a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit with a 19bhp electric motor and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It’s front-wheel drive only, making it perfectly suited to efficient around-town driving. With a 0-62mph time of ten seconds, it’s a shade faster than the petrol option while returning 47.9mpg on the combined cycle.

Choose the PHEV and emissions are slashed to just 44g/km of CO2. This powertrain comprises a 1.3-litre petrol engine and electric motor, which together produce 237bhp. It’s paired with a six-speed manual gearbox and comes with all-wheel drive as standard. Not only is it the most eco-friendly option, returning between 141.2 and 148.7mpg, it’s also the fastest, achieving 0-62mph of 7.3 seconds. With a 30-mile all-electric range too, you can complete school runs and the daily commute emission-free.

Features you can expect in a Jeep Compass

Interior

The interior of the Jeep Compass provides a premium feel without shying away from the brand’s rugged origins. Variants produced before the 2021 facelift – with the exception of the entry-level Sport – all offer an 8.4-inch media display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. DAB radio and Bluetooth also come as standard across the range.

Variants produced after the 2021 update in particular boast soft-touch surfaces, high-quality yet durable upholstery and a multi-function steering wheel. These variants also include the updated Uconnect 5 infotainment system, complete with a 10.1-inch touchscreen display.

All Mk2 models provide ample space to seat five, and drivers get a commanding view of the road thanks to the elevated ride height. Meanwhile, the dash layout is simple and clean, with all controls neatly to hand.

Technology

If you’re looking for a technologically advanced SUV, the Jeep Compass checks all the boxes. Motorway driving is made simple thanks to the inclusion of cruise control as standard. All editions also feature LED headlamps for the best possible illumination. Choose a four-wheel drive variant and you benefit from added traction in wintry conditions.

Longitude trims and up feature an auto-dimming rearview mirror, which prevents you from getting dazzled by the vehicle behind at night time. It also adds a reversing camera for easy manoeuvring and Keyless Go, meaning there’s no need to use the key fob to unlock and start the car – you simply need it on your person.

Safety

The Jeep Compass is one of the safest vehicles around for families and adventurers. In its 2017 test it achieved a full five-star rating from Euro NCAP, scoring 90% for adult protection and 83% for child occupants. Alongside six airbags, standard features on all Mk2 models include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning.
