White Jeep Wrangler from the front

First unveiled at the 1986 Chicago Auto Show, the Jeep Wrangler epitomises the go-anywhere ethos of the American manufacturer. Available in two or four-door options and with a petrol or diesel engine, you can also choose between a retracting soft top or a removable hard top. Trim levels available are the Sahara, Overland and Rubicon.

Rivals of the Jeep Wrangler include the Land Rover Defender, which was retired in 2016, the Mitsubishi Shogun and the Toyota Land Cruiser. None of these, however, can boast the rugged charm and sheer off-road prowess of the American 4x4.

Jeep Wrangler updates and facelifts

It has been through four generations since the initial launch in 1986, with the second arriving in 1996 and the third entering showrooms in 2007. The Mk3 comes in two-door and four-door iterations.

The Mk4 Wrangler arrived in 2018, retaining its iconic vintage looks and off-road capabilities. It also inherited the previous generation’s removable roof. A revised Wrangler was revealed at the New York International Automobile Show in April 2023. It features an updated but still recognisable grille, new wheel options, powered front seats and a 12.3-inch touchscreen.

Practicality and style of the car

The Jeep Wrangler is well suited to those who lead an active lifestyle and require a car to take them off road and carry kit for any adventures. The boot of the two-door Wrangler provides 192 litres of space – enough for hiking boots and poles, or a gym bag. For more room, the rear bench is folded and flipped forward as a single unit. This frees up 587 litres.

Choose the four-door option and there’s more room for luggage. The boot holds 533 litres of cargo with all seats in place, and 1,044 litres with the split folding seats down. That’s plenty for fishing gear, suitcases or camping equipment and closely matches its rival, the Mitsubishi Shogun, which has a maximum capacity of 1,119 litres.

Not only is the Jeep Wrangler confident and capable off-road, it also makes an excellent tow car. Choose the four-door and you can haul up to 3,500kg of braked weight. That’s more than enough for a large caravan or a horsebox. If you have smaller towing needs, the two-door option can pull a braked weight of up to 1,500kg.

Running costs

The Mk4 Jeep Wrangler (2018 onwards) occupies insurance groups 32–41 out of 50. Choose a Mk3 (2007–2018) and the model sits between groups 18–31. This matches its rival, the Land Rover Defender, which sits between groups 27–50 for variants from 2020 onwards.

In terms of road tax, you’ll pay either £180 or £570 per year for the Mk4 edition. The higher fee is paid for the first five years the tax is renewed on models with a list price of £40,000 or more. After that, it reverts to the standard £180 annually.

How a used Jeep Wrangler drives

The Mk3 Wrangler came with a 3.8-litre petrol V6 engine. This was replaced in 2011 with a more efficient 3.6-litre option, which delivered 282bhp and 350Nm and could be specified with manual or automatic transmission. There is also a 2.8-litre diesel available for this edition, which has an output of 174bhp and 400Nm of torque. Available with an automatic gearbox as standard, it achieves a 0-62mph time of 10.6 seconds.

Choose a Mk4 and there are petrol, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and diesel options. The petrol is a 268bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged unit that develops 400Nm of torque. It’s mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and achieves a 0-62mph time of as little as 7.6 seconds. It also returns a combined fuel economy of up to 34mpg. Opt for the 2.2-litre diesel and you’ll have 197bhp and 450Nm of torque at your disposal. With a 0-62mph time of 9.9 seconds and a fuel efficiency of 38mpg, this is a punchy yet economical option.

The eco-conscious will appreciate the Jeep Wrangler PHEV, which the brand has called Wrangler 4xe. Pairing a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, it produces 375bhp and offers a combined fuel economy of 67mpg. It covers up to 28 miles on electric-only power and CO2 Emissions are reduced to 79g/km. The 17.3kWh battery can be charged in around three hours using a 7kW Wallbox. The electric motor not only makes the Wrangler more environmentally friendly, it also boosts performance, delivering a 0-62mph time of 6.4 seconds.

Features you can expect in a Jeep Wrangler

Interior

Jeep Wrangler interior driver seat, centre console, gear sticks, dashboard, infotainment screen and steering wheel

The Jeep Wrangler’s practicality lies primarily in its all-terrain abilities. For that reason, it’s best suited to those with an active lifestyle or regular off-roading needs. Opt for the two-door variant if you only need to accommodate rear passengers occasionally.

There are two seats in the back, offering room for children and teens, adults can be transported comfortably on short journeys too. The four-door iteration has three rear seats and provides more legroom for adults. Headroom is abundant in both versions and with the roof removed, even the tallest passengers are accommodated.

Inside, the Jeep Wrangler is smart and functional. Soft-touch materials and leather trim are incorporated on the doors, steering wheel and dashboard, adding a feeling of comfort. The dash has a logical layout that makes everything easy to operate. In keeping with the retro feel of the exterior, elements of the design hark back to the early years of Jeep. What’s more, everything can be easily wiped clean, meaning no matter how much mud and dust gets into the cabin, it’s easy to keep clean and tidy – perfect for the adventurer.

As a model that focuses on practicality, the Jeep has plenty of storage cubbies. In addition to cupholders between the front seats, there are door bins and a glovebox to stow all the essentials you need for your journey. Behind the wheel, you’ll get a commanding view of the road thanks to the high, upright driving position.

Infotainment is excellent too. All Mk4 Wranglers (2018 onwards) come with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, which is responsive and easy to use. It provides access to sat nav, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and an eight-speaker Alpine audio system.

Technology

The Jeep Wrangler may be a no-nonsense vehicle, but that doesn’t mean it lacks technology. All the essentials are included to ensure you have a comfortable and convenient drive. For example, climate control comes as standard, as does keyless go – a handy feature that means you don’t need to search your pockets or bag for your car keys to unlock it and start the engine. When you’re manoeuvring, there are rear parking sensors and a reversing camera to help you out. Motorway driving is made easier thanks to cruise control too.

If you are choosing a Wrangler for off-roading, you’ll find plenty of tech to assist you in the top-spec and off-road-focused Rubicon trim. There is a dedicated Off-road Mode, which enables you to tailor the vehicle’s performance to the surface you’re driving on, and extra differentials to help avoid slipping on challenging surfaces.

Safety

It is the Wrangler’s rugged simplicity that appeals to many of its buyers. As such, its equipment is kept straightforward. You’ll find four airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control and automatic emergency braking as standard on later Mk4 editions. You may also find used models that feature the Launch Pack, which includes blind spot monitoring. This identifies vehicles and other objects in your blind spot and alerts you to their presence with an illuminated visual signal.

Trims available on the Jeep Wrangler

Jeep Wrangler Sahara

The entry-level Sahara trim includes 18-inch alloy wheels, powered door mirrors and a removable roof on the exterior, as well as technology such as keyless go, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. The infotainment system comes with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, 8-speaker Alpine sound system, sat nav and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

The top-spec Rubicon trim is off-road focused, providing removable sway bars, an Off-road Mode, 17-inch black alloy wheels and protective rock rails along the lower body sides.
