What is the Kia Picanto GT-Line S?

The Kia Picanto GT-Line S is a city car with a turbocharged engine and sleek look. If you’re looking for the performance and style of a hot hatchback in a smaller package (and with low running costs), this trim is an excellent option. It’s well suited to drivers looking for a sporty style or well-equipped small car that sits in a low insurance group.

Since it first appeared on the streets in 2003, the Kia Picanto has undergone four facelifts and produced three generations. As the city car market has slimmed down, the Kia Picanto has emerged as one of most enduringly popular options. The Kia Picanto GT-Line S is a great choice if you’re in the market for a car like the Volkswagen up! GTI, Hyundai i10 N Line, Citroën C3 Shine Plus or Abarth 595 or the less powerful Fiat 500 S.

Kia Picanto GT-Line S history

The Kia Picanto was created in 2003 by South Korean manufacturer Kia. Designed with South Korea’s tax incentives for small cars in mind, this compact, front-wheel drive vehicle was unveiled at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. The car’s second generation came along in 2011, which was given a facelift in 2014 that added daytime running lights and a new bumper.

The most recent third generation of the Kia Picanto, which hit the roads in 2017, has been given two facelifts to date. It has picked up a number of awards, including What Car?’s 2018 Best City Car and awards for its design from iF and Red Dot. The two GT-Line trims have been commended for bringing a more performance-focused option to the historically low cost and accessible Kia range.

The Kia Picanto has evolved into a five-door only city car with a streamlined selection of engines and trim options. It was only upon the arrival of its third generation in 2017 that the GT Line was introduced to the Picanto lineup – including the GT-Line S. This trim is available with a five-speed manual gearbox and a choice of two petrol engines: the 1.0-litre T-GDI petrol, which was introduced solely for the GT-Line and GT-Line S trims, and the 1.25-litre petrol. The former is faster, with 99bhp and 171Nm of torque taking it from 0-62mph in 9.9 seconds. The 1.25-litre has 83bhp and 122Nm of torque, getting it from 0-62mph in 11.6 seconds.

Where does the Kia Picanto GT-Line S sit in the range?

The GT-Line S sits at the top of the Mk3 Kia Picanto trim range as its flagship offering. It sits above the GT-Line trim, pairing useful technology with the sporty GT-Line aesthetics. Expect to find plenty of useful technology designed to keep you entertained and safe on the go, as well as striking design choices that set the GT-Line S apart from its city car competitors.

What features and equipment does the Kia Picanto GT-Line S have?

The Kia Picanto GT-Line S sits on 16-inch alloy wheels. Its exterior has lots of premium and sporty touches, including LED daytime running lights, a twin-exhaust tailpipe and red-trimmed GT-Line bumpers and grille. Your passengers will be shaded from the sun and passers-by thanks to the rear privacy glass – which also makes the car feel a little more exclusive.

To keep you safe, there are all the regular features like cruise control, hill start assist, hill hold, and forward-collision assist. In addition, there are reverse parking sensors to help you avoid bumps and scrapes when bay and parallel parking. The Kia Picanto GT-Line S also has practical, considered touches, like a deep centre console storage compartment and a light-up vanity mirror on the driver’s sun visor.

There are also plenty of comfort-focused features inside – starting with keyless entry to help you avoid the frustration of losing your keys in your bag. The front red-detailed, faux-leather seats are heated, as is the steering wheel, which makes driving on cold days more pleasant. If the heat’s bothering you instead, there’s air conditioning too, or you can open the electric sunroof to let in a welcome breeze.

There’s a useful selection of technology to make the most of with the GT-Line S. You can charge your smartphone using the wireless charger in the centre console. For music and navigation, there’s an eight-inch touchscreen that’s equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a sat nav. The infotainment system makes it easy to make calls, change songs and check directions on the go.

Despite its compact size, there’s plenty of room for five adults to travel comfortably in the Kia Picanto GT-Line S.
