Arnold Clark offers the best used Land Rover Discovery deals, guaranteed.

The Land Rover Discovery is a born adventurer, at home on the road and off the beaten track. One of the most awarded 4x4s of all time, the Discovery 4 (2009) won its seventh consecutive ‘4x4 of the Year’ award at 2011's WhatCar? Awards.

It won the Tow Car Awards over eight times and picked up the ‘Tow Car of the Decade’ award in 2016. It also won the ‘Large SUV’ award at Auto Express's New Car Awards in 2012. In 2017, Auto Express judges awarded the Discovery the ‘Best Large Premium SUV’ of the year, going on to crown in the ‘Car of the Year’.

Comfortable and powerful – the Discovery works well as a comfortable MPV, a class-leading off-roader or towing heavy loads and remains the poster boy of rugged 4x4 SUVs.

Land Rover Discovery updates and facelifts

The Discovery Series I debuted in 1989, with Series II introducing newer, more powerful engines in 1998. In 2004, the Discovery 3 marked the beginning of the second generation. It sported a redesigned aesthetic, though it kept its iconic shape. In 2009, the Discovery 4 arrived, changing the look further and again varying the engine lineup.

The third generation of Discovery began in 2017. Based on the Range Rover, the Discovery 5 is more rounded and aerodynamic. Like its predecessors, it is a seven-seater 4x4 SUV. A 2021 facelift tweaked the interior and engine lineup. The Discovery 5 comes with petrol and diesel engines, with some MHEV (hybrid) options.

Practicality and style of the car

With all seven seats upright, the Discovery’s boot has 228 litres of space, increasing to 1,137 litres with the rearmost seats folded. Bikes and other similarly sized items are easily accommodated. You can lower the seats using an app on your phone for ease.

Thanks to the boot lip, 300kg carrying capacity and square boot shape, shopping bags, luggage and equipment are easily stowed. Folding the second-row seats provides a huge 2,406 litres of space, more than enough to carry small pieces of furniture.

The Land Rover Discovery can tow up to 3,000kg with a petrol engine and up to 3,500kg with a diesel engine. This makes it one of the best cars on the market for towing capabilities. The Land Rover Discovery makes short work of large caravans, boats, fully laden trailers and more.

If your adventures land you in deep water, don't worry – the Discovery 5 has a wading depth of 900mm. That's 200mm more than previous generations.

Running costs

The Land Rover Discovery falls between insurance groups 38 and 45 (out of 50), average among its rivals. The Audi Q7 is slightly higher, between groups 41 and 50, with the BMW X5 also reaching as high as group 50.

Road tax is up to £675 yearly for 2017 models onwards. By comparison, the Audi Q7 can reach up to £570.

How a used Land Rover Discovery drives

Features you can expect in a Land Rover Discovery

Interior

The Discovery offers excellent road visibility, plenty of storage and lots of useful features. The door bins can comfortably hold large water bottles. Two vertically arranged glove compartments give you secure spaces to store your items out of sight. The central console has large cupholders that slide away to reveal underneath storage with charging ports. The central console also has a deep storage compartment that, in the top-spec trim, can be upgraded to a fridge. A small storage unit behind the climate control dials keeps small items securely out of sight. Bags can be kept tidy and secure with retractable hooks in the footwells.

Climbing through the trims, the Discovery gains a sat nav and parking camera. Its 2021 facelift saw the Discovery 5 upgraded to the 11.4-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system, offering a best-in-class user experience with a clear, curved display. In the back, top-spec trims have built-in screens for entertainment on the go. Rear passengers can adjust the dual-zone climate control with dedicated dials. Aeroplane-style storage nets on the back of seats keep items secure.

Sturdy handles help passengers get in and out of the back. The sliding back seats are comfortable and accessible, offering plenty of legroom and headroom for adult passengers. The low transmission tunnel means central passengers have a comfortable leg position. The back seats can easily be folded down electrically, then slid forward to access the rearmost two seats.

The third-row seats comfortably seat two adults. There are cubbies on each side for storing small items, each with 12V charging ports to keep devices topped up. The seats are also electrically heated in some trims.

Technology

As standard, every Land Rover Discovery 5 gets air suspension, DAB radio with Bluetooth connectivity and six speakers throughout the car. Higher trims upgrade that to ten speakers, sat nav and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Since its 2020 facelift, the Discovery has featured Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, making it quick and convenient to connect your phone. A heads-up display gives the driver essential information, like the current gear, speed and navigation directions.

Many models of the Discovery feature automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, rear fog lights, a heated rear windscreen and trailer stability assist. The mirrors are also heated and electrically adjustable, with power folding and memory functions to make it easier if more than one person drives the car.

Thanks to hill descent control, hill launch assist and gradient acceleration control, you can drive your Discovery with confidence and precision no matter where the road takes you. Wade Sensing tells the car when you are traversing deeper bodies of water, while the Adaptive Dynamics, Electronic Air Suspension and Roll Stability Control keep the car under control even when pushed to its limits.

Many trims feature adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, front and rear parking sensors, rear traffic and collision monitoring, traffic sign recognition and a 3D surround camera.

Safety

Scoring a full five stars in its 2017 Euro NCAP safety test, the Land Rover Discovery is remarkably safe, with features like autonomous emergency braking and seat belt reminders. It scored 90% for adult occupancy protection and 80% for child occupant protection. As a safe family car, the Discovery excels. There are ISOFIX mounts in all passenger seats except the rear centre.
