Maserati overview

Founded in 1914 in Bologna, Italy, Maserati (pronounced ma.zuh.raa.tee) is one of the most iconic car brands in the world.

With a history rooted in motorsports, Maserati still has a reputation today for its iconic sports and racing cars. Three brothers – Alfieri, Ettore and Ernesto Maserati founded the company, ‘Officine Alfieri Maserati SA’. The company specialised in spark plugs and then, during World War I, aircraft engines. In 1926 it launched its first automobile: the Tipo 26.

Like the many that came after it, the Tipo 26 carried the Maserati logo which a fourth Maserati brother, Mario, designed. The logo is based upon the trident on a Neptune statue found in Bologna’s Piazza Maggiore.

While one of the brothers, Alfieri, died in 1932, Ettore and Ernesto oversaw the growth of the Maserati brand with the help of another brother, Bindo, until 1937 when it was sold to the Italian industrialist, Adolfo Orsi. Orsi relocated Maserati to his hometown of Modena, where its headquarters remain today.

After the war, Maserati expanded its product line beyond race cars, offering luxury sports and grand touring (GT) vehicles. In 1968, fellow European manufacturer Citroën bought a controlling stake in Maserati. But after Citroën went bankrupt in the early seventies, Maserati’s ownership passed to GEP, a state-owned holding company, and Alejandro de Tomaso, an Argentinian industrialist.

Maserati changed hands again in the nineties. Fellow Italian car manufacturer Fiat first acquired the business in 1993. Then, in 1997, Fiat handed ownership to Ferrari, which it also owned, before grouping it with Alfa Romeo in 2005, after which it became the luxury division of Fiat: Fiat Chrysler.

In 2021, Fiat Chrysler merged with PSA, a French automobile manufacturer that owned Citroën, to form Stellantis. Maserati is now one of its subsidiaries.

Known primarily for its high-end sports cars to today’s buyers, Maserati is a highly sought-after luxury brand with limited cars on the roads. In 2023, it launched its first ever all-electric vehicle: a sports car, the GranTurismo Folgore. It has also launched the Grecale SUV as an EV model. Maserati has stated that it will offer electric options of all its current models by 2025.

Popular Maserati models

The Maserati GranTurismo is one of the Italian manufacturer’s best-known models. At the time of its launch in 2007, the stylish two-door sports car broke the record for the quickest development in the industry. It went from design to production in nine months. Its various iterations range from the original GranTurismo I to the more powerful MC Sport Line and the muscular looking MC Stradale.

Another of Maserati’s iconic models is the Quattroporte: a luxury sports sedan which dates back to 1963. Now in its sixth generation, the original Quattroporte was a stylish saloon. Today, the Mk6 is larger than any of its predecessors and comes with a range of powerful petrol or diesel engines.

One of Maserati’s newest models is the Grecale. A sleek SUV with impressive interior technology and a sleek design, the Grecale comes with hybrid technology and competes with other luxury SUVs like the Porsche Cayenne. The Grecale Folgore, launched in late 2023, is an all-electric version of the same model.

Manufacturer awards

Maserati’s motor racing accolades over the last century speak for themselves. But more recently, the Italian manufacturer has received numerous awards for its premium models that are currently on the roads – from its sports cars to its EV SUVs.

Perhaps most notably, the Maserati MC20, one of the manufacturer’s supercars, won British GQ’s Super Sports Car of the Year in 2020. The model also won Product Design of the Year at the European Product Design Awards and was Evo’s Car of the Year in 2022.

Even more recently, the GranTurismo Folgore – Maserati’s first ever EV – won Best Electric GT at the Top Gear Electric Awards in 2023.
