What is the Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG?

A compact five-door hatchback that delivers dynamic performance and a premium driving experience, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class serves as the German manufacturer’s entry level vehicle. The A-Class AMG is the high-performance iteration of the standard car, endowing it with more power and additional technology.

The AMG sub-brand was founded in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. Their names provide the ‘A’ and ‘M’ of the brand, with the ‘G’ standing for Grossaspach, Aufrecht’s birthplace. Initially established to develop racing cars based on standard Mercedes-Benz models, AMG officially joined Daimler-Benz in 1990. The letters have represented high-performance editions of the brand’s road cars ever since.

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG competes with other sporty models such as the BMW M140i and the Audi RS 3. Rivalling these, along with the Honda Civic Type R and Volkswagen Golf R, the A-Class AMG provides a premium experience in addition to outstanding performance, giving it the edge over these competitors.

Its styling marks it out as a performance model, with an AMG-specific radiator grille, red brake callipers and AMG badging. It also offers a powerful 2.0-litre engine with two output options – 302bhp (A 35) and 416bhp (A 45). As such, it’s an ideal choice for those who want exciting performance with responsive handling and advanced technologies.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG history

AMG’s roots are in motorsport. The brand was established as a racing forge in 1967 and soon found its engines gained popularity. It began working with Daimler-Benz in the late 1980s, and in 1990 their partnership was made official. This means that AMG products could be sold and maintained through the Mercedes-Benz global network. Their first jointly developed vehicle was unveiled in 1993: the Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG.

The first Mercedes-Benz A-Class was launched four years later, in 1997. Representing Mercedes-Benz’s first foray into the compact hatchback market, it quickly found success thanks to its spacious, well-equipped cabin and innovative safety features. A second generation was released in 2004, refining the original model and offering a choice of three- and five-door body styles.

The Mk3 A-Class took a new direction when it arrived in 2012. Redesigned from scratch, it swapped its predecessors’ MPV-like stance for a more conventional hatchback appearance. It was with this edition that the first AMG variant was introduced. Named the A45 AMG, it could accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.6 seconds. It also boasted a more athletic design and the latest technology to enhance performance and driving dynamics.

The Mercedes-Benz A 35 was unveiled at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, launching alongside the Mk4 edition of the A-Class. Equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 302bhp and 400Nm of torque, it could reach 62mph from a standstill in 4.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 155mph. The following spring, the hot hatch variant was joined by a saloon. This offered the same exciting performance but with more cabin space and a larger boot for those seeking extra practicality.

A new Mercedes-Benz A 45 S AMG hot hatch replaced the original A 45 in 2022, taking performance to the next level. With the same 2.0-litre turbo engine as the A 35, it produces 416bhp and 500Nm of torque, accelerating from 0-62mph in just 3.9 seconds, and with a top speed of 168mph. In 2023, the A 35 AMG received an update, which included some styling tweaks, but, more significantly, the addition of 48-volt mild hybrid technology to improve efficiency.

Where does the Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG sit in the range?

The Mercedes-Benz AMG variants sit at the pinnacle of the A-Class range. As performance-focused hot hatches, they are set apart somewhat from the rest of the lineup, offering more power and finely tuned handling. To make the best use of the extra power, they are fitted with 19-inch alloy wheels and a body kit that promotes optimal aerodynamics.

What features and equipment does the A-Class AMG have?

The Mercedes-Benz A 35 AMG offers a sporty aesthetic with 19-inch alloy wheels, upgraded brakes and a rear spoiler on the hatchback body style. There are five driving modes to choose from, including Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual. The interior is equipped with the MBUX infotainment system, complete with the ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice assistant, as well as dual-zone climate control and a head up display.

The A 45 S AMG comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sliding sunroof, AMG performance exhaust sound system, roof spoiler and AMG-specific radiator grille in high gloss chrome. Inside you’ll find heated, leather-upholstered front seats with a memory function, as well as dual-zone climate control and a host of sporty accents. Technology includes a Burmester surround sound system as well as augmented reality for navigation.
