The Renault Koleos is a compact crossover SUV and is the largest SUV in the Renault range. First launched in 2006, the Koleos is only available as a five-door, five-seat model. But with plenty of cabin space and practicality built in, it is well suited to families and those looking for a good level of comfort over long distances.
Renault Koleos updates and facelifts
Thanks to its balance of practicality, technology, and design, the Koleos rivals other models like the Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorrento. Unlike these rivals, the Koleos has retained its five-seat design across two generations.
The Renault Koleos also offers plenty of outer styling to help it stand out on the road. It boasts a simple and attractive exterior which complements its high position on the road. On the inside, you’ll also find plenty of soft and premium materials, such as leather upholstery and chrome inserts, that help make the Koleos pleasure to drive.
The Koleos received a minor facelift in 2011, which revised its front and rear bumpers, front grille, headlights and wheels. The second generation of the Renault Koleos was released in 2016. The Mk2 is 153mm longer than the Mk1, offering much more legroom in the cabin. It is also available in two and four-wheel drive and has an upgraded range of technology. The Mk2 received a facelift in 2020 which restyled its front bumper and added deeper intake and also widened the front grille.
Practicality and style of the car
The Koleos’ substantial size means that there’s ample room on the inside. There’s more than enough headroom for even five tall passengers as well as excellent knee and leg room for all occupants. In the driving seat, you’ll be well positioned with plenty of visibility. Both wind and engine noise are hushed, making for a pleasurable cabin experience.
In the centre console, there are four USB slots which make it easy to plug in your own devices and a handy AUX input. To keep the Koleos clean, you will find four large door bins which are perfectly sized for holding drinks bottles. There are also two front cupholders which can both heat and chill your cups. Handheld accessories can fit neatly into the glovebox and lidded central container.
The model has a standard boot space of 565 litres which can be expanded to 1,795 litres by folding down the rear seats. This is more than the Hyundai Santa Fe’s 1,649 litres.
A Koleos is also a very good option if you’re looking for a car that can tow. It has a maximum braked towing capacity of 2,000kg, which is plenty for most medium to large-sized trailers and caravans.
A Renault Koleos offers reasonable running costs with its insurance groups running from 18 to 24. This compares favourably to the Hyundai Santa Fe’s range of 23–40 and Ford Edge’s 25–34.
It also has a reasonable annual road tax of between £180 to £390.
How a used Renault Koleos drives
The Renault Koleos comes with a select group of two diesel engines. The entry-level option is the 1.6-litre, four-cylinder 128bhp DCi unit. It is only available in two-wheel drive and accelerates from 0-62mph in 11.4 seconds. Its top speed is 115mph and it returns 57.6mpg. It also offers 320Nm of torque and is paired to a six-speed manual gearbox.
The other engine option is a 2.0-litre DCi which generates 175bhp and can be paired to a CVT seven-speed gearbox. Normally, it goes from 0-62mph in 10.7 seconds, but with the CVT option, it can achieve this in 9.5 seconds. It has a top speed of 126mph and returns 45.5mpg.
The Renault Koleos comes with three drive modes: auto, two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. The automatic mode automatically distributes torque and power between the front and rear axles, while the two-wheel drive engages only the front wheels. The four-wheel drive option tunes your drive for off-road performance. All engines also come with stop/start, which helps push your fuel economy further.

Features you can expect in a Renault Koleos
The interior of the Koleos is well-designed and is furnished with soft-touch materials that make it a pleasure to be in. There are leather trimmings running across the multi-functional steering wheel, cushioned seats and the dashboard, making these surfaces easy to grip. For extra style, the air conditioning grille, steering wheel and centre console all boast a silver chrome strip for a welcome colour contrast.
On the centre console, you’ll have a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen which features a DAB radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth as standard. There is also an in-built TomTom sat nav which includes full UK and European mapping. As well as its onscreen menus, there are four manual buttons underneath the screen which can quickly take you to any of the system’s features.
You will also find a seven-inch TFT digital instrument cluster. This is easy to read even when driving at night and displays your speed, mpg, remaining fuel level and distance driven.
The Koleos has a great range of technology which helps keep the driver safe and the car running smoothly. For convenient lane changing, there’s a blind spot assist warning which alerts you to any approaching vehicles that aren’t visible in your wing mirrors. There is also hill start assist, which is especially useful when you’re pulling off on an incline.
The Koleos also features road sign recognition, which can highlight any road signs that you may have missed, as well as a hands-free parking system for smoother parking.
The Renault Koleos is a safe model and has been awarded Euro NCAP’s maximum five-star rating. It was also given an adult occupant safety score of 90% and a child safety score of 89%. As part of its range of safety features, you’ll have surround airbags, speed assistance, lane change assistance, a seatbelt reminder and three ISOFIX points in the rear seats for securing child seats.
