What is the SEAT Leon FR?

With a remarkable interior and stylish exterior, the SEAT Leon FR offers drivers a sportier version of the popular mid-sized family car. Available as either an estate or hatchback, the SEAT Leon FR comes with plenty of onboard technology and sleek styling to satisfy enthusiasts looking for a performance car without sacrificing the practicality of a family car.

The SEAT Leon FR competes well on the market rivalling other performance trims such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI, the Audi A3 S-Line and the ŠKODA Octavia vRS. With the FR standing for ‘Formula Racing,’ SEAT designed this trim to match performance cars and to stand out from the standard SEAT Leon by adding a sporty body kit.

Seat Leon FR history

The SEAT Leon was launched in 1999 as one of the fastest models in its class. It came with a 177bhp, 1.8-litre engine that had a top speed of 142mph and achieved 0 to 62mph in 7.7 seconds – faster than many of its family hatchback competitors. The SEAT Leon FR trim was launched three years later in 2002.

Designed to rival the Volkswagen Golf GTI, the Leon FR was an affordable and sporty performance car, coming with several turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. The Leon FR had a top speed of 147mph and achieved 0 to 62mph in 7.3 seconds. The unique exterior design of the vehicle, with its striking new front and rear bumpers, ensured the SEAT Leon FR stood out on the road.

The Mk2 SEAT Leon FR was launched in 2006. It received a similar restyling as the Mk2 SEAT Leon but with a unique front bumper, a larger central air intake and fog lights which include cornering technology to help drivers see around bends.

The Mk2 FR also benefitted from the model’s mid-life facelift in 2009. Its outer styling was updated, with a larger rear window improving the reversing visibility.

The FR again featured in the SEAT Leon Mk3, which was released in 2012. As with previous generations of the trim, the FR offered updated exterior styling, such as new alloy wheels, new signature bumpers and triangular LED lights.

The SEAT Leon Mk4 was released in 2020 with the FR included in the range. The Mk4 FR option includes a lowered sports suspension, sporty dual exhaust pipes, sleek front and rear bumpers, dynamic indicators and triple-zone climate control.

It comes with a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 108bhp. It accelerates from 0-62mph in just over 10.9 seconds. There are also two 1.5-litre engines which can produce 128bhp or 148bhp. The former goes from 0-62mph in 9.4 seconds while the latter does it in 8.7 seconds.

There is also two 2.0-litre diesel. The first is a 113bhp engine which goes from 0-62mph in just over 9.5 seconds while the latter is a 147bhp option which goes from 0-62mph in just over 8.1 seconds.

Where does the SEAT Leon FR sit in the range?

The SEAT Leon FR sits just below the flagship trim for the SEAT Leon, offering the driver a range of performance and style additions that help to make this a practical and dynamic family car. Sitting above the entry-level SE trim and the SE Dynamic, the FR trim is only second to the FR Sport.

For variants of the SEAT Leon with a hybrid powertrain, the FR becomes the entry-level trim.

New FR trims, including the FR Technology, FR Sport and FR Black Edition, were also included in the Mk3’s trims. The FR Technology brought dark tinted rear windows, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors and an XDS electronic differential to improve traction. The FR Sport came with 18-inch alloy wheels, a retuned chassis and part-leather front sport seats.

The FR Black Edition adds new black highlighting to the exterior as well as heated headlight washers and washer nozzles for easier winter driving. In the interior, you’ll find SEAT’s digital instrument display and heated front seats.

What features and equipment does the Leon FR have?

The SEAT Leon FR comes with a unique body styling kit which features a set of unique front and rear bumpers with LED lights, helping to give it an attractive appearance. The exterior also features 17-inch alloy wheels, dynamic turn signals, automatic wipers and electric wing mirrors. For enhanced performance, the Leon FR features sports suspension and different driving modes, which are selected through the infotainment system.

Step inside the cabin, and owners will find three-zone climate control, ambient LED lighting and plenty of smartphone charging points including both USB-C ports and a wireless charging pad. These features help to give the SEAT Leon FR an upmarket feel when driving.
