About used Tesla Model S cars from Arnold Clark

First unveiled as a prototype in 2009 it reached the UK market in 2014. Tesla Model S was providing high-performance electric motoring when many other marques were only just beginning their foray into plug-in power. It was a vehicle that made EV ownership highly desirable. This was thanks to its advanced technology, premium interior and impressive practicality.

The Model S falls into the executive segment in terms of size. It has a five-door hatchback body style and five seats. Buyers initially had the choice of three variants – the 60, the P85 and the P85 Performance Plus. In 2015, a four-wheel drive iteration, named the P85D arrived. The P85D boasting twin electric motors. Two months after the P85D release the 70D replaced the entry-level 60. The Tesla Model S continued to evolve, with different options becoming available throughout the ensuing years. Tesla simplified the lineup in 2019. The Model S became available in Long Range or Performance versions only.

The Tesla Model S rivals other models like the Mercedes-Benz EQE, Genesis Electrified G80, Porsche Taycan and BMW i7.

Tesla Model S updates and facelifts

Over the first ten years of its life the Model S has had numerous updates and refreshes. These have included multiple battery sizes and drivetrains available options. When the updated model arrived in the UK in 2023, there were some significant changes. There were 2 variants available. These included the standard dual-motor Model S and the Model S Plaid. The Plaid added a third motor for breathtaking performance. A new front bumper marked it out from predecessors, and inside there was a more minimalist design. The biggest change, however, was that the model became left-hand drive only. Telsa attributed this to mechanical and logistical complexities.

Practicality and style of the car

At just over five metres long and almost two metres wide, the Tesla Model S has an exceptional amount of space for both passengers and luggage. Slim batteries and compact motors mean the boot is an impressive 804 litres with all seats in place. This is more than the Mercedes-Benz EQE’s 430 litres and Porsche Taycan’s 366 litres. Drop the rear seats, which split 60/40, and 1,600 litres of space opens up. If that’s not enough, there’s a cubby under the bonnet which can accommodate the vehicle’s charging cables.

Those looking to tow can haul a small or mid-size caravan with their Model S. It has a maximum braked capacity is 1,600kg. The vehicle also comes with a Trailer Mode that adjusts the response of some of the safety features, such as cruise control.

Running costs

As a premium electric vehicle, the Tesla Model S sits in group 50 out of 50 for insurance. This is typical for this vehicle class as both the Mercedes-Benz EQE and BMW i7 fall into the same group. As a zero-emissions model, the Tesla is exempt from road tax until 1 April 2025. It is also exempt from other emissions-based fees such as the London Congestion Charge, ULEZ and LEZ areas.

How a used Tesla Model S drives

Step behind the wheel of the Model S and it senses you’re in the car and automatically turns on. Two powertrain options are available, with the entry-level Model S having a dual-motor setup. This produces 661bhp and 967Nm of torque, sending the car from 0-62mph in only 3.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 155mph. With a range of up to 394 miles on a single charge range anxiety is all but eradicated.

The Model S Plaid has three electric motors – two mounted on the rear axle and one on the front. Combined, they produce a staggering 1,006bhp and 1,424Nm of torque, enabling the car to go from 0-62mph in just 2.1 seconds. This version reaches a top speed of 200mph. The maximum range is equally impressive, boasting up to 373 miles on a single charge.

With a maximum charging speed of 250kW, a top-up from 10–80% using a V3 Tesla Supercharger takes just 30 minutes. Charging at home with a 7.4kW wallbox takes just over 13 hours; if you have three-phase power that can support an 11kW wallbox, this can reduced to approximately 10 hours.

Features you can expect in a Tesla Model S

Interior

The interior of the Tesla Model S is as innovative as its powertrain. A 17-inch, landscape-orientated touchscreen display dominates the front of the cabin. This provides access to all vehicle functions, from audio and sat nav (provided by Google Maps) to climate control and other settings. There’s a generous amount of space too, with ample legroom for the front passenger and plenty of headroom for all occupants. In the rear, three average-sized adults can sit side by side in comfort. The middle-seat passenger has ample foot space, as there’s no transmission tunnel. The cabin has plenty of natural light thanks to a panoramic roof that spans the length of the car. The four-zone climate control enables all occupants to travel at their preferred temperature.

When it comes to storage, you’ll find a pair of cup holders between the front seats, as well as a useful cubby beneath the driver’s armrest. Large door bins provide space for drinks bottles or tablets, and there are two wireless charging pads – one for each front occupant.

Selected variants stand out thanks to a steering yoke, which replaces the traditional steering wheel. This gives an aircraft-like feel and ensures your hands stay in the correct position as you drive.

Technology

You can operate almost all the car’s functions via the 17-inch touchscreen display. In addition to the standard features you’d expect – such as DAB radio, music streaming and heating/ventilation controls – there are some unique features available. Romance Mode, for example, displays a fire on the screen and warms the vehicle, while Caraoke enables you to enjoy a sing-along session with the kids. When parked, you can even stream content on Netflix and entertain yourself with games in the ‘arcade’.

The Autopilot feature is one of the model’s most impressive innovations. Providing an element of hands-free driving, it enables you to direct your car over short distances to a location via Tesla’s app. It can also park the car with minimal driver input.

Safety

Tested by industry experts Euro NCAP in 2022, the Tesla Model S received a full five-star rating. With an adult occupant protection score of 94% and a child occupant protection score of 91%, it is one of the safest vehicles in its class. It also has a higher adult and child occupant safety rating than the Porsche Taycan (85% and 83%) and Genesis G80 (91% and 87%). The cabin is equipped with a host of front and side airbags, as well as three sets of ISOFIX mountings in the rear. Active technologies include autonomous emergency braking, collision warning, a lane assist system and a blind spot monitor. All of these use sensors to help prevent an accident or minimise the severity of an impact.

When the vehicle is parked and locked, Sentry mode is activated. This triggers the external cameras, which start to record if movement is detected around the car. If a theft is attempted or the Model S is bumped by another car while parked, the incident is recorded.
