What is the Toyota Corolla GR Sport

Take Toyota’s most successful model and add sporty personality from the marque’s racing division, Gazoo. That’s the Toyota Corolla GR Sport. It was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2019 and has proved popular across Europe. For UK drivers keen to get behind the wheel of the esteemed GR Corolla, the GR Sport trim offers a worthy alternative. It’s available as a hatchback or an estate, making it a suitable option for families and professionals that crave sportier styling.

The Toyota Corolla GR Sport's popularity comes down to its versatility. It brings the practicality of decent space and a smart interior, but with sportier styling inside and out. Competition comes from hot hatches like the Ford Focus ST Line, Volkswagen Golf R and Honda Civic Type R. It’s a hybrid only, but with a choice of two powertrains: a 1.8-litre and a 2.0-litre.

Toyota Corolla GR Sport history

The Toyota Corolla model itself is one of the marque’s long-standing icons, released back in 1966. It wasn’t until 2019 that the world got to see its GR Sport trim at the Geneva Motor Show. From 2020, the GR Sport was seen on UK roads.

This GR Sport edition was released as part of the Corolla’s 12th generation. It’s built on Toyota’s high-tech TNGA platform, which helped the car earn a place on and remain a front-runner in the British Touring Car Championship. This racing spirit is embodied in the GR Sport trim.

Another key point about its release date is its all-hybrid line-up. It coincided with the year that Toyota decided to switch to a dual hybrid strategy for the Corolla, meaning it is offered with a choice of two self-charging hybrid petrol engines.

One is the fourth-generation 1.8-litre unit putting out 120bhp and 124Nm of torque. It’s backed by a 53kW electric motor, which contributes 163Nm of torque. This combined power gives the Corolla GR Sport a 0-62mph time of just under 11 seconds. The second option was new for 2019 – the GR Sport’s release year. It’s a racier 2.0-litre unit with 178 bhp and 192Nm of torque, again boosted by the electric motor. This version reaches 0-62mph in around eight seconds.

In 2023, Toyota unveiled a facelift for the 12th generation Corolla GR Sport. As part of this evolution, the engines have been revamped to improve their performance, both in terms of speed and fuel efficiency. The 1.8-litre engine powertrain has an improved 0-62mph time by 1.8 seconds, taking it down to 9.1 seconds. Similarly, the 2.0-litre unit saves half a second in reaching 0-62mph, hitting the speed in 7.4 seconds. These improvements come down to the fifth-generation hybrid system, which is lighter and more compact.

Along with a faster engine output, Toyota gave the GR Sport trim rear bumper, under guard and 18-inch alloy wheels a new look as part of the 2023 facelift. The GR logo was also more liberally applied in the interior.

Where does the Toyota Corolla GR Sport sit in the range?

2019 was the first year the GR Sport trim was added to the much-loved Corolla model. It sits towards the top of the range, only one below the flagship Excel. Its athletic appearance sets it apart from others with its large honeycomb mesh on the grille, gloss black roof and two-toned alloy wheels with a bright machined finish around the rim and tips of the spokes.

Note that the 18-inch alloy wheels are replaced with 17-inch ones for the estate, Touring Sports, body. Inside, you’ll find subtle GR styling to complete the sportier feel. This trim matches the Design trim in terms of equipment but with some additions to enhance the driving experience.

What features and equipment does the Corolla GR Sport have?

Across the GR Sport body, piano black finishing gives the car both a sporty and sophisticated look. Silver trimming finishes the rear, outlining the bumper and the exhaust. GR logos are dotted over the exterior to signal its racing upgrade. The 2023 facelift version has a new-look rear bumper.

Inside, the racing-inspired look continues. Sports seats combine black fabric with a pinstripe pattern, finished with a contrast silver ribboning. In variants following the 2023 facelift, you’ll find the GR logo added to the push button starter as another reminder of the car’s personality.

Along with the features of the Design trim, the GR Sport adds a seven-inch colour TFT multi-information screen, presenting the technical data in an intuitive format with 3D graphics. The head-up display projects this information onto your windscreen to keep your eyes on the road. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included with this trim, so you can listen to your choice of music.
