Packed with family-friendly features, the five-door Vauxhall Zafira has brought practicality and comfort to the market since 1999. With high safety ratings and innovative storage solutions, the Vauxhall Zafira stands as a credible contender for those seeking a large seven-seater car.

The Vauxhall Zafira provides enough technology and comfort to satisfy passengers of all ages, alongside a hefty storage capacity that means the weekly shop and longer trips away are hassle-free. The Vauxhall Zafira offers impressive boot space, towing capacity and roof rack storage.

In 2002, the Mk1 Zafira was just shy of the top ten best-selling cars in the UK and was rated one of the most popular cars of its size on the market. Later in 2006, it was named the tenth best-seller and was the very first multi-purpose vehicle to reach such a high ranking.

Vauxhall Zafira updates and facelifts

The first generation of the Vauxhall Zafira received a facelift in 2005 and has been a favourite ever since. The Mk1 comes with three trim options: Exclusiv, Excite and Design. Following the Mk1 Zafira, Vauxhall released the Zafira Tourer Mk2 in 2011, which received a facelift in 2016.

The Vauxhall Zafira Mk1 has three engines available that consist of two petrol options and one diesel. There is a 1.6-litre and a 1.8-litre petrol engine and a 1.7-litre diesel. With a variety of options, the Vauxhall Zafira meets a vast array of driving needs.

Practicality and style of the car

The Vauxhall Zafira’s main attraction is its impressive storage capacity. While three rows of seats comfortably accommodate seven adults, collapsing the third row into the floor reveals a huge 1,820-litre space. A strong contender even against modern rivals, the Zafira has a larger boot capacity than the Dacia Jogger's 1,807 litres from 2022.

With two ISOFIX anchors in the second rear-row seats, the Vauxhall Zafira is designed to carry your littlest passengers safely. With various cubbies and nearby storage dotted around the car, passengers can store their belongings securely while keeping the main cabin clutter-free. The cabin is also well-insulated which reduces wind and road noise well.

With a towing capacity of up to 1500kg (braked weight), owners can pull medium-sized caravans and trailers, or extra equipment like bikes or even jet skis, meaning those more adventurous getaways are possible with the Vauxhall Zafira.

Running costs

Much like the Dacia Jogger and the Volkswagen Touran, the Zafira falls between insurance groups 10 and 22. Alongside this, you can expect to pay £180 road tax annually for 2005 models onwards, depending on the trim you choose. Strongly competing in its class, this car has reasonable long-term running costs.

How a used Vauxhall Zafira drives

The Vauxhall Zafira is based on the Astra and has a strong reputation for handling well. There are two petrol engines to choose from and one diesel. While both the 1.6-litre and the 1.8-litre petrol engines produce enough power to overtake easily, even when towing at full capacity, the 1.8-litre option offers a swifter and more impressive performance. The 1.7-litre diesel has two power outputs which will excite any driver of this seven-seater MPV.

The 1.8-litre petrol engine is more powerful than the 1.6-litre option, reaching 0-62mph in 11.5 seconds, with a top speed of 120 mph. It manages to produce 39.0mph and 168g/km of CO2, compared to the 1.6-litre producing 42.0mph and 157g/km of CO2. Both petrol engines come with a five-speed manual gearbox.

The 1.7-litre diesel engine has 2 power outputs with either a 108bhp or a 123bhp, achieving 0-62mph in 12.3 seconds. This engine has a fuel economy of 55.4mpg and emits 134g/km, making it the most energy-efficient option available. The diesel engine has a six-speed manual gearbox.

Features you can expect in a Vauxhall Zafira

Interior

Inside, the Vauxhall Zafira is representative of its time, with easy-to-use controls and physical buttons. Its central dashboard has a straightforward layout that all drivers can navigate with ease. You will also find controls on the steering wheel, enabling you to keep your hands on the wheel more. In the Vauxhall Zafira Excite and Design trims, you will find AUX-in outlets alongside a mobile system with Bluetooth connectivity.

The Flex7 system means all seats, except the driver’s, can fold forwards to reveal a large loading area. This is bigger than that offered by the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate – the largest estate car on the market. Vauxhall has ensured maximum adaptability with its sliding middle-row bench, allowing you to adjust and alter both storage and passenger space.

Wipeable plastics and durable cloth upholstery are found throughout the Zafira, making it easy to keep clean and tidy long-term. With clever storage solutions and ample room throughout the interior, five adults and two children can enjoy longer, scenic journeys in the Zafira without compromising on comfort.

Technology

The Vauxhall Zafira contains a wide selection of technology that makes driving that little bit easier, despite its early entry to the market in 1999 and facelift in 2005. The Exclusiv entry-level trim comes with an anti-lock braking system, and remotely controlled central deadlocking, with twin front, side-impact and curtain airbags, as standard.

Safety

With families in mind, it's important that Vauxhall made the Zafira safe and with a five-star rating from Euro NCAP. The Zafira has a five-star rating for adult occupants, four for child occupants and two stars for pedestrian protection.

This well-built MPV doesn’t fall short when it comes to safety features, with cornering brake control that helps you avoid skidding on sharp corners. The collapsible pedals avoid leg injuries if an accident occurs, while electronic brake distribution gives the driver maximum control by reducing the likelihood of the wheels locking.

Vauxhall Zafira Excite

The Zafira Excite has some exciting upgrades that make family life that little bit easier. 16-inch alloy wheels can be found on this trim, alongside front fog lights and a multi-function trip computer that keeps drivers informed at all times. Alloy-effect roof rails will also carry bikes, freeing up more space in the boot or towed trailer.
