What is the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport?

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport is a mid-to-upper-tier trim on the Golf GTI. It adds a powerful engine and a range of upmarket features, the Clubsport was first released in 2017 to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the GTI. Thanks to its combination of style and thrilling performance, this is a sought-after trim for enthusiasts and those looking for a high-performance hot hatch.

The Clubsport is also a practical choice. It has very supportive sports seats, decent cabin space and a compact size, making it great for both city driving and track days. This means that through its combination of performance and practicality, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport is a worthy rival to other hatchbacks such as the SEAT Leon Cupra and Honda Civic Type R.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport history

The Clubsport was first released in 2016 as part of the Volkswagen Golf Mk7’s 2016 facelift. It was released exclusively in a hatchback body and added revised styling, including a new rear hatch spoiler and a rear diffuser. It also came with brightly coloured twin exhaust outlets and smoked rear light lenses to add to its stylish appeal. Only 1,000 models of the Clubsport were manufactured.

Inside, the Clubsport added Alcantara and cloth racing seats for extra comfort. It also featured stainless steel door plates with a red GTI signature and a suede-material steering wheel. While the Clubsport was released with the same 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine as the GTI, the Clubsport’s engine produced 261bhp – 34bhp more than the GTI Mk7’s 227bhp. This helps the Clubsport accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds – faster than the Mk7’s time of 6.5 seconds.

The Clubsport was updated with the release of the Mk8 Volkswagen Golf in 2019. This update increased the power of the Clubsport’s engine to 296bhp, added a new sports suspension, velour trim upholstery and lowered the car by 10mm.

The Clubsport is only available with a seven-speed automatic DSG gearbox, which offers seamless and rapid gear changes to push your performance.

Where does the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport sit in the range?

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport is a trim on the Golf GTI hatchback line. While above the GTI trim, it sits beneath the Volkswagen Golf R, which became the flagship Volkswagen Golf trim in 2002.

The Clubsport also sits under the limited edition Clubsport S trim, which features a 306bhp engine. This engine accelerates from 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds making it the fastest Golf trim. The Clubsport S is a very limited-edition trim, with only 400 units produced worldwide.

What features and equipment does the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport have?

One of the Clubsport’s most appealing features is its new suspension. This helps the car sit 10mm lower on the road compared to the GTI trim. This suspension dampens bumps so you feel closer to the road without any discomfort.

You will also have an in-built Vehicle Dynamics Manager which integrates control of the electronic differential locks, lateral dynamics components and the electronically controlled limited slip differential. This delivers improved performance and traction, adding to the Clubsport’s extremely rewarding drive.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find a multi-functional leather steering wheel and exceptionally comfortable heated sports seats. Depending on the age of your Clubsport these will be made from cloth and Alcantara leather or a high-grip Velour material. The premium materials used throughout the Clubsport are a welcome upgrade on the GTI trim.

You will also find Alcantara leather on the gear knob, while for added luxury there’s ambient lighting to help keep the cabin illuminated when driving at night.

The Clubsport’s range of smart technology includes climate control, parking sensors which help you back into tight city spots and a 10-inch Discover Media infotainment system. This screen is located in the centre console and comes with sat nav, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is also a 10-inch Virtual Cockpit which shows you key drive information, including your speed, distance driven and mpg at a glance.

The Clubsport also comes with some exterior upgrades which help it stand out compared to the Golf’s entry-level trims. A Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport manufactured after 2019 will come with red brake callipers with signature GTI stamps, a dual-edged roof spoiler and widened side skirts. All of these give this hot hatchback an unmistakably desirable profile.
