What is the Volkswagen Polo R-Line?

Drivers will never have a dull moment in a Volkswagen Polo R-Line. With good handling and refined engines, the Volkswagen Polo offers an enjoyable driving experience. The supermini is enhanced with the sporty looks and features added by Volkswagen as part of the R-Line trim level. With the R standing for ‘Racing’, owners can expect their Polo R-Line to deliver great performance as well as look the part.

The Volkswagen Polo R-Line supermini competes well on the market and rivals the Audi A1 S-Line, the Ford Fiesta ST-Line, the Peugeot 208 GT and the Renault Clio R.S. Line.

VW Polo R-Line history

The Volkswagen Polo has evolved over the years since its first launch in 1975. The Mk2 was introduced in 1981, with the Mk3 following in 1994. The Mk3 Polo followed in 2001, with the Mk5 arriving in 2010.

In October 2011, Volkswagen introduced the R-Line trim for the Volkswagen Polo. Volkswagen introduced the R-Line as a top-end trim for the Polo. On the outside, it comes with 16-inch Mallory alloy wheels and newly remodelled front and rear bumpers. On the front bumper, there is a deeper air intake with a glossy black finish, adding to the trim’s front profile. You will also find sculpted side sills.

Inside, you’ll find a gloss black trim on the centre console and a multifunctional steering wheel. There is also signature R-Line branding on the wheel for a welcome styling addition. While you drive, you’ll enjoy well-padded and supportive sports seats with extra side lumbar support. They also have white bolsters for a colour contrast.

This R-Line was available with a 1.4-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. It produces 138bhp and accelerates from 0-62mph in just over 7.9 seconds. It also has a top speed of 130mph.

In 2014, the Volkswagen Polo R-Line received a facelift as part of the Mk5’s mid-cycle facelift. A new athletic look was given to the Polo with remodelled headlights and bumpers helping it stand out. A striking honeycomb front grille was also included.

Volkswagen released the Mk6 Polo in 2017, with the R-Line remaining in the range. The R-Line trim benefitted from the Mk6’s new design, including a new headlight design and a new infotainment system in the cabin.

The Mk6 R-Line is available with a 1.0 TSI engine, which can be configured to produce either 94bhp or 113bhp. The former accelerates from 0-62mph in 10.8 seconds while the latter goes from 0-62mph in just over 9.2 seconds. These engines are paired to a five-speed manual gearbox or an automatic DSG option.

Where does the VW Polo R-Line sit in the range?

The R-Line is the high-end trim for the Volkswagen Polo. In the Mk5’s trim line-up, the R-Line’s performance specifications mean that it sits above entry-level options like the S, SE, SE Design and Match. It sits beneath the luxurious GTI trim due to its powerful engine and premium cabin.

In the Mk6 range, the R-Line is a mid-tier option. It sits above the Match, Active, Life and Style trims but below the upmarket SEL, GTI, GTI Plus and UNITED editions.

The R-Line adds a series of premium features to the Polo as well as a unique design to the exterior. After 2021, the R-Line sits above the Life and Style trim levels. Even before the range was revised in 2021, the R-Line was still the flagship trim since its launch in 2011.

What features and equipment does the Polo R-Line have?

The Volkswagen Polo R-Line comes with a range of equipment and premium features that give it a sportier appearance. On the exterior, the R-Line comes with trim-specific 16-alloy wheels, a unique front and rear bumper design with black gloss highlights and rear privacy glass. You will also find a sports-inspired rear diffuser which helps the trim stand out.

On the inside, you will also find that the sporty appearance has been incorporated into the well-built interior with two-tone sports seats with R-Line branding, stainless steel pedals and a black headlining. There are also decorative elements on the dashboard and door sills that are specific to the R-Line trim which help to enhance the interior design.

On top of the standard equipment that comes with the Volkswagen Polo, other features on the R-Line include adaptive cruise control, driver fatigue detection, traffic sign recognition and automatic high-beam assist. The R-Line also comes with front and rear parking sensors and lane keep assist to further aid the driver.
