What is the Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line?

Arriving on the UK market in 2012, the R-Line is a high-end trim level for the universally popular Volkswagen Tiguan range. One of the most likeable compact SUVs on the market, the Tiguan is spacious, practical and powerful. Its broad build and modern design set it apart on the roads. Throughout its generational updates, it has maintained its popularity in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

VW Tiguan R-Line history

The Tiguan was introduced to the UK in 2008, while the R-Line trim was added in 2009. As one of the Tiguan’s higher-level trim options, it builds upon the popular foundations of other trim levels with more premium tech equipment and driving assistance, as well as some attractive external upgrades.

The used R-Line is also available with the Volkswagen Tiguan’s most powerful engines. These include the 316bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine, which can do 0-62mph in a range-topping 4.9 seconds, and the 2.0-litre 178bhp diesel which can hit 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds.

While the R-Line trim was added to the Tiguan’s Mk1 lineup a year after the model’s initial release, it was one of the most popular options among buyers. Making up 20% of all Mk1 Tiguan sales, the R-Line trim offered a sportier alternative to some of the entry-level trims. When the Mk1 was given a facelift in 2012, the R-Line wasn’t initially part of the new line-up, but was added retrospectively thanks to its popularity among the original Mk1 options.

Where does the Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line sit in the range?

The Volkswagen Tiguan comes in a range of trims, with the Mk2 options including the Life, Elegance, R-Line and R-Line Edition, with further additions including the Black Edition and the range-topping R.

Among these, the R-Line is one of the premium trim levels, offering some of the Tiguan’s most high-tech features while retaining the widely praised practicality that the entry-level Tiguan is known for.

What equipment does the R-Line have?

The sporty design of the R-Line trim really sets it apart from its competitors. While the entry-level Life trim has 18-inch alloys, and the more practical Elegance trim ups this to 19 inches, the R-Line wields 20-inch ‘Misano’ alloys. This, paired with its uniquely sporty exterior, makes for a handsome and powerful-looking SUV. Front-on, it looks larger than some of its counterparts with a chunky bumper. It also has sports suspension for improved road holding.

Unlike the Life, Elegance and R-Line Edition, the R-Line trim has both a Lane change assist system and a Proactive Passenger Protection system, enhancing safety in line with its sporting credentials. On the inside, the R-Line increases the premium feel, too. A black roof lining, a sports steering wheel and heated sports seats create an air of luxury throughout the cabin, while aluminium dash inserts are another classy touch.

While the lower-entry trims of the Tiguan have some high-tech features as optional, the R-Line boasts many of them as standard. The 12.3-inch Active Info Display system enhances the ultra-modern feel of the Tiguan. Not only does it offer Apple AirPlay and Android Auto connectivity but trims with 4Motion four-wheel drive can also display wheel departure angles.

Advanced LED headlights are another perk of the used R-Line, optimising visibility for tricky conditions or dark country roads. The trim also includes the standard features that have set the Tiguan apart in the SUV marketplace. Adaptive cruise control, driver alert system and fatigue detection are all hallmarks of the Tiguan’s safety credentials, while a multifunctional front-facing camera to maintain safe distances and keyless entry are further luxury additions that reinforce its upmarket appeal.
