Released in 2015, the Touran’s second generation has continued to impress with its larger, lighter and more efficient design, based on the original Touran introduced in 2003. Perfect for a large family or anyone with hobbies requiring lots of equipment, the Touran’s removable back-row seats mean a huge van-like capacity is available.
Volkswagen has adopted a straightforward, no-nonsense approach with this MPV, from the exterior and interior designs to the overall handling. And while it provides enough space for any eventuality, it doesn’t skimp on quality. High-spec technology and safety features are found through all five trims: the S, SE, SE Family, SEL and R-Line.
The Volkswagen Touran struggles to find competitors that can rival its incredible 1,857-litre load space. The Dacia Jogger and Ford S-Max are considered rivals, but the Touran performs extremely well within its class when considering storage, style and design.
The Volkswagen Touran now comes with one engine option, the 1.5-litre TSI petrol. Cars older than 2015 come with four possible engines: the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol, the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol, the 1.6-litre diesel, and the 2.0-litre diesel engine.
With the SUV’s rise in popularity, the Touran stands as a solid and reliable alternative that is hard to beat. An efficient, well-equipped MPV that has earned its place in its class.
Practicality and style of the car
The Touran’s primary and arguably most impressive attribute is its boot space. The third-row seats are easily installed and removed as and when needed. Without the additional third row, the Touran has a 927-litre boot capacity. Folding down the second row of seats increases that to an incredible 1,857 litres of load space. With the ability to fold the front passenger seat, Volkswagen has provided a 2.7-meter space to play with. This van-like storage capacity invites a range of possibilities - travelling and long-trip adventures are made easy with the Touran.
When comparing the Touran’s capacity to other seven-seaters on the market, it performs very well. Its cost-conscious rival, the Dacia Jogger, provides 565 litres of space with upright seats and 1,807 litres folded – significantly less than the Touran. Even with all three rows assembled upright, the Touran gives enough room for the weekly shop or school bags with 137 litres remaining.
Furthermore, the Touran is great for families with small children and provides five ISOFIX anchors. Five children can sit safely and comfortably in the Touran with ample leg room and personal storage.
Since Volkswagen reduced its engine variety to one, its towing capacity has changed. Post-2015, the petrol 1.5-litre engine can tow braked trailers up to 1,500kg. Before 2015, models with the 2.0-litre petrol engine had a towing capacity of up to 1,800kg. Even with the 1,500kg towing capacity, the Volkswagen Touran can tow mid-sized trailers and caravans while easily carrying extras like jet skis and bikes.
Running costs
Running a Volkswagen Touran is relatively low cost. Road tax ranges from £35–£180 annually depending on the trim and engine you choose, while insurance groups sit within 9–21 (out of 50).
How a used VW Touran drives
Following 2015 and into the Volkswagen Touran’s second generation, the number of engine options was reduced to one. Prior to this, there were two diesel engines: a 2.0-litre and a 1.6-litre, alongside the 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre petrol engines.
Currently, with the Mk2, the 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is the only option available. This engine comes with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission gearbox and both options reach 62mph in 8.9 seconds. With 148bhp, this large, seven-seater MPV has enough thrust to get going rapidly and easily sustain itself on longer journeys.

Features you can expect in a VW Touran
With its vast storage solutions, high-quality interiors and incredibly robust safety equipment, it’s easy to see why the Volkswagen Touran is a top choice for families, up against its rivals on the market.
Interior
Volkswagen has given the interior of the Touran a premium feel and a sense of quality. Plush upholstery is found in most trims. In the rear, you’ll find wipeable seat trays and durable materials, making it easy to keep the Touran clean. Front seats have a higher seating position and are ideal for long journeys with their robust support. Second-row seats can slide back and forth with recline options, too. There is plenty of head and legroom for five adults in the Touran. In some high-specification trims, heated seats can also be found.
You won't struggle to keep your used Volkswagen Touran tidy with its many storage solutions. A hugely impressive 47 cubbies and pockets can be found in the Touran, including a large storage compartment in the roof console, a multifunction centre console with a storage box and under-seat drawers.
Technology
All Mk2 Touran cars come with an eight-inch Discover Media Navigation multimedia touchscreen. As well as its modern touchscreen, there are also physical buttons for adjusting the volume, with the ability to zoom in and out of the navigation map on the standard sat nav system. SEL and R-Line trims also have wireless smartphone connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Despite the level of trim you choose, you won't struggle to keep the little ones entertained or comfortable on longer journeys or daily school trips.
Safety
Euro NCAP awarded the Volkswagen Touran five stars. Its vast array of high-quality safety equipment meant it scored an adult occupancy score of 88%, a child occupancy score of 89%, 71% for pedestrian safety and 76% for safety assistance. You’ll benefit from nine airbags, automatic post-collision braking, a pre-crash proactive occupant protection system, adaptive cruise control, emergency braking and traffic alerts in post-2015 variants. The Volkswagen Touran Mk2 is also the first MPV ever to provide trailer assist.

The SEL trim features some impressive upgrades. These include three-zone climate control, ambient lighting, and interior microfibre trim to the upholstery creating a more sophisticated feel overall.
