Great performance and style are the hallmarks of the Audi TT coupé First launched in 1998, the Audi TT has undergone several facelifts to ensure it continues to deliver a great driving experience with modern technology and stylish good looks. The Audi TT is also available as a two-seater convertible Roadster.

Audi TT updates and facelifts

Audi gave the Audi TT a facelift in 2014, which updated the body kit to give it a more modern aesthetic. In 2018, the Mk4 Audi TT received subtle exterior design changes and the cabin also got new technology such as a condensed infotainment system and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital information screen where the instrument cluster sits. Also in 2018, the Audi TT won WhatCar? Magazine’s Best Coupé Award, proving that even 20 years after its launch it’s still a hugely popular model with motorists.

In 2020, the Mk5 Audi TT received another facelift to upgrade the technology further. Replacing the analogue dials and separate infotainment system with a 12.3-inch virtual cockpit to create an intuitive dashboard and driving experience.

The Audi TT proves to be stiff competition for other premium and sporty coupés on the market such as the Ford Mustang, Porsche 718 Cayman and the Toyota GT 86. A used Audi TT is available with either petrol or diesel engines. Drivers can also choose from front-wheel drive or Audi’s Quattro four-wheel drive option, which optimises torque distribution to each wheel for better grip and road handling.

Practicality and style of the car

The Audi TT Coupé provides drivers with the ideal model for city driving as well as putting the power down on the motorway. At 4.2m long, the TT is 20cm shorter than the BMW 2 Series coupé and is well suited to tight city parking and roads. The Audi TT Roadster is similarly practical, measuring the same as the TT coupé.

When it comes to boot space, the Audi TT is very practical for a coupé, with a capacity of 305 litres which can easily be expanded to 715 litres by folding the rear seats down. That’s larger than the boot space of the Suzuki Vitara, a small SUV, which offers 710 litres. The TT’s boot opens wide to make unloading and loading easy, and because the rear seats fold flat you shouldn’t struggle to fit large items such as suitcases.

The Audi TT Roadster also comes with a decent-sized boot for the size of the car, though it sacrifices a little space for the folding roof. It offers 280 litres of boot space and a broad loading bay to again help you load larger items with ease.

Running costs

Both the Audi TT Coupé and Roadster sit within an insurance group range of 32 to 50. Road tax for a used Audi TT will cost between £180 to £570 annually, with the majority of trims falling into the £180 band. Opt for a 2.0 TDI Ultra S Line 2d or 2.0 TDI Ultra Sport 2d, and you’ll find yourself paying just £20 a year.

How a used Audi TT drives

Used Audi TTs come with petrol and diesel engines available so you can choose the one with the right performance for you.

For petrol engines, there is the 194bhp 40 TFSI 2.0-litre with a seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which can achieve up to 46.3mpg and reaches 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds. There is also an even punchier 242bhp 45 TSFI 2.0-litre engine available in either automatic or manual transmission. This achieves up to 42.2mpg and does 0-62mph in just 5.8 seconds. The 45 TFSI engine is also available in front-wheel or with Audi’s Quattro four-wheel drive system which improves grip and handling on the road in all weather conditions.

The Audi TT Roadster can have a 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that can put down around 395bhp. This offers top speeds of 155mph which can be raised to 175mph by removing the electronic speed limiter. This engine can also go from 0-62mph in an impressive 3.7 seconds. The Audi TT Roadster has a fuel economy of between 32.8mpg and 50.4mpg.

The 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine provides the Audi TT with 184bhp and 380Nm of torque and can reach a top speed of 149mph. A diesel engine has a superior fuel economy of 58.9–61.4mpg and is available with either a manual or automatic S Tronic gearbox as well as the choice of front-wheel or Quattro four-wheel drive. The diesel engine in an Audi TT is perfect for long motorway journeys as it provides a smooth and powerful ride.

Features you can expect in an Audi TT

Interior

When you drive a used Audi TT you won’t be disappointed. It excels when it comes to performance and style and is well-equipped with premium features across the range. The stylish interior of an Audi TT creates an upmarket cabin, with a clean and sophisticated dashboard furnished with high-quality materials.

Another stand-out design feature of the Audi TT’s dashboard is the series of stylish air vents, which have controls built into them. Featuring front and centre on the dashboard they can control the temperature and ventilation of the cabin. These are also effective and powerful enough to provide warmth in the Audi Roadster even with the convertible roof down.

Storage spaces are conveniently located around the cabin space to help keep it clutter-free. In the Audi TT Coupé, large and deep door bins are practical for storing plenty of items, and clever compartments in the front allow for smaller items such as smartphones, glasses or keys to be stored neatly. USB ports are also located nearby so that you can keep charging cables out of the way. There is also a decent-sized glovebox to store manuals and other items securely in the car.

In the Audi TT Roadster, there are equally functional storage spaces such as a series of small cubbies dotted around the cabin of the car, including a compact one in the armrest and another underneath the centre dashboard – these are great for storing away items such as keys, wallets and smartphones while driving. There is also a cupholder so that you can keep your coffee close by and avoid any spillages in the cabin.

Passengers in an Audi TT can expect to be comfortable on short trips with decent headroom and legroom. In the Audi TT Coupé, the backseats are suitable for occasional use by two children, with ISOFIX child seat mounts included as well. The Audi TT Roadster also offers plenty of legroom and headroom for the passenger.

Technology

Audi’s Virtual Cockpit displays all the necessary information for drivers, including infotainment functions such as sat nav, music or hands-free calling. Both the Coupé and Roadster feature a 12.3-inch virtual cockpit digital instrument cluster. This provides the driver with instant, at-a-glance info, so they don’t have to divert their attention from the road. All functions available on the Virtual Cockpit can be controlled via a control wheel located on the centre console or via the controls on the multifunctional steering wheel. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available for smartphone connectivity with the integrated infotainment system.

For those wanting to make hands-free calls in the Audi TT Roadster with the roof down, there’s no need to worry about the other person not hearing you as there is a handy microphone built into the seatbelt that reduces background noise and improves clarity.

Safety

The Audi TT was awarded four stars out of five in the Euro NCAP crash tests. The TT also scored highly in the occupant safety tests scoring 81% for adult protection and 68% for child protection. The Audi TT can come with a host of safety features including electronic stability control to prevent the vehicle from skidding when making sudden manoeuvres, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring and a lane departure warning system that alerts you when you are close to the edge of the lane.

Trims available on the Audi TT

Audi TT Sport

This is the entry-level trim, which is very well-equipped as standard with a series of features including Audi’s Drive Select which enables you to choose between three different modes of driving to alter the performance to match your needs. There is a 12.3-inch screen, Virtual Cockpit, air conditioning, keyless start, light and rain sensors, electric parking brake, rear parking sensors, cruise control, LED and Xenon headlights and a retractable rear spoiler. The interior features heated cloth seats, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and a flat-bottomed leather steering wheel. 18-inch alloy wheels are also available on the Sport trim.

Audi TT S Line

The S line trim adds some sportier features to the Audi TT such as 19-inch alloy wheels, optional sports suspension, an exclusive sports styling kit, brushed aluminium interior inlays and Alcantara and leather sports seats that provide extra comfort and support for the driver and front passengers.

Audi TT Black Edition

The Black Edition trim adds interior and exterior style changes such as black 20-inch alloy wheels, slate grey interior inlays, a fixed rear spoiler and a black styling pack. This makes the Audi TT look even more sleek and sporty with high-quality materials.

Audi TT Vorsprung
