What is the Ford Fiesta Zetec?

The Fiesta is one of Ford’s most iconic models, and Zetec has meant several things to the car over the years. The name Zetec began life as a moniker for Ford’s new engine range, introduced with the fourth-generation model. At this time a Zetec S spec was also launched, sitting at the top of the range.

The Zetec trim level was introduced with the launch of the Mk7 Fiesta in 2008. By this time, it occupied a high position in the lineup, only topped by the Titanium trim. The Mk7 Fiesta Zetec proves a well-equipped and enticing option for first-time buyers and families.

With the launch of the Mk8 Fiesta in 2017, the Zetec trim was moved to the middle of the range. As such it remains a comparatively low-cost choice, and there are many to be found on the used market. Rivals include the Vauxhall Corsa, Volkswagen Polo, SEAT Ibiza and Škoda Fabia.

Ford Fiesta Zetec history

First launched in the 1970s, the Ford Fiesta offered buyers an affordable, three-door option for urban and family travel. It proved popular, and by the end of the first generation’s lifetime, Ford had sold over one million units.

The Mk2 was released in 1983, again in three-door hatchback format. Despite fierce competition from the Vauxhall Nova and Austin Metro, the Fiesta gained a significant following, selling over 4.5 million units by 1989. With the arrival of the Mk3 in 1989 came the introduction of the five-door body style. The interior felt more upmarket too, with a heated windscreen and more supportive seats available.

In 1995 the Mk4 Fiesta was launched with a softer, more rounded look. It was at this time that Ford first began to use the Zetec name. The fourth-generation Fiesta was available with Zetec SE engines, which continued to be used until the release of the Mk7 in 2016. There was also a Zetec S trim level. The highest in the range, it boasted 100bhp and a revised suspension setup for a sportier drive. This generation was given a facelift in 1999 with the launch of the Mk5.

With the arrival of the new millennium came a new Fiesta. The Mk6, released in 2002, came with a raft of safety features as standard, including passenger airbags and anti-lock brakes. It quickly became the best-selling generation to date. The Mk6’s lifetime saw the Zetec S ‘Anniversary’, ‘Celebration’ and ‘Red’ special editions unveiled; only 400 units of each were produced.

The Mk7 Fiesta was introduced in 2008 with both three and five-door options. It was during its time that the Zetec name took on a new meaning. The Zetec and Zetec S trims were now seated below Titanium but above three other variants: Studio, Style and Style+. The trim could be specified with an array of engine options, including the award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol, which offered outputs of 99bhp, 123bhp and 138bhp.

Zetec models are recognisable by their styling upgrades, which typically include unique alloy wheels and chrome accents. In 2019, both Style and Zetec were superseded by the Trend variant.

The Mk7 Fiesta Zetec (2008-2017) has a premium look, boasting 15-inch alloy wheels with a unique design, front fog lights and chrome accents. There are upgraded features on the inside too, including a leather-trimmed steering wheel and handbrake, ambient lighting and Ford’s iconic Quickclear heated windscreen.

Technology in the Mk7 Fiesta Zetec includes the Ford SYNC system with Bluetooth connectivity and a USB port. The innovative MyKey feature is available too.
