Attractive, practical and comfortable, the Škoda Fabia offers exceptional value for money, which in-part accounts for its appeal. Indeed, having won awards from What Car?, Parkers and Carbuyer, as well as the prestigious Red Dot Award for design, it has excelled in its sector since its launch in 1999.

Škoda Fabia updates and facelifts

This nippy supermini first went on sale just eight years after the Czech brand was acquired by Volkswagen Group, adopting the same platform used by both the Volkswagen Polo and the SEAT Ibiza. The following year, ŠKODA released an estate version, which offered an affordable and dynamic solution to those looking for extra space. Then, in 2003, the Fabia vRS was unveiled, a hot-hatch variant that offered enhanced performance levels while maintaining the regular car’s capacity for efficiency.

Four years later, the second-generation Fabia made its debut. Not only did it benefit from a stylish upgrade, it was bigger and better equipped than before. This edition was later joined by a new petrol-powered vRS version and the sporty Monte Carlo trim.

The Mk3 Fabia was launched at the beginning of 2015, with a larger boot and more technological features, while a 2018 update saw styling tweaks and extra driver aids. The current Mk4 model arrived in 2021, boasting class-leading space and a high-quality cabin. As such, it confidently rivals some of the UK’s favourite superminis, including the Renault Clio, Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa.

Practicality and style of the car

As one of the most spacious superminis in its class, the Škoda Fabia has no trouble providing the practicality that most families require. While the Mk3 hatchback can comfortably accommodate two adults or three children in the back row, the latest model offers even more shoulder room, giving you the option of carrying three adults on shorter trips. Legroom is among the best in its class, rivalling premium models such as the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Headroom is impressive too, notably so in vehicles with the optional panoramic sunroof.

The Mk4 editions come only in a five-door hatchback, offering easy access to the back row. There are three ISOFIX and Top Tether anchor points too: one on each outer rear seat and one in the front passenger position, meaning infants and toddlers are secure on every journey.

All Mk3 Fabia hatchbacks feature a 330-litre boot, which is bigger than the Toyota Yaris (286 litres) and Ford Fiesta (311 litres). With rear seats dropped, luggage capacity grows to 1,150 litres. The Mk4 edition offers even more room, boasting a 380-litre boot, which extends to 1,190 litres with the rear seats folded.

Running costs

The Fabia is more affordable to run than others in its class, with most Mk3 models sitting between insurance groups 1–12 (out of a possible 50). Choosing a more powerful engine or a Monte Carlo edition pushes your premium towards the top of that bracket. Opt for a Mk4 and most models occupy groups 2–14, with top-of-the-range trims increasing to group 19.

Road tax for Mk3 Fabia models will vary, with some pre-2017 models only incurring a £20 annual fee, while others produce few enough emissions to be exempt from VED. Choose a Mk4 and you’ll pay the standard £180 charge every 12 months.

How a used Škoda Fabia drives

The Mk3 Škoda Fabia, manufactured between 2015 and 2021, offers a choice of petrol and diesel engines. These include the 1.0-litre petrol, which produces either 59bhp or 74bhp and is highly efficient, returning 57.6–57.7mpg. You’ll find plenty of used Fabias available on the market with this engine.

There is also a 1.2-litre TSI turbocharged petrol unit with outputs of either 89bhp or 109bhp, which offers swifter acceleration, achieving 0-62mph in as little as 9.4 seconds. The only diesel option is a 1.4-litre TDI engine producing 89bhp or 104bhp. All apart from the lowest powered unit are available on the hatchback and estate models.

When the Mk4 arrived, ŠKODA dropped the diesel option, providing a 1.0-litre MPI (non-turbo) and a 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged petrol. The former produces 79bhp and is mated to five-speed manual transmission, while the latter offers 94bhp or 108bhp and comes with a six-speed manual gearbox. The 108bhp unit also has the option of automatic transmission.

Monte Carlo trims come with a 1.5-litre 148bhp TSI petrol engine and DSG automatic transmission as standard. This will take you from 0-62mph in just 8.0 seconds.

Features you can expect in a Škoda Fabia

Interior

The Škoda Fabia is an ideal family car, particularly if you choose the larger Mk4 model. Despite its compact exterior it seats five comfortably, and offers plenty of in-car storage, from a removable cup holder between the front seats to a box that sits in the rear tunnel. The back seat pockets are even divided into two, with one smartphone-sized pocket and a larger one for other items.

Getting comfy in the Fabia is simple. Drivers can adjust the seat for lumbar support, while the steering wheel provides rake and reach options. Meanwhile, the large windows and slim front pillars ensure there’s always a clear view of the road ahead.

ŠKODA’s trademark ‘simply clever’ features add some handy items too. There’s an ice scraper in the fuel filler cap, and SE L trims have a compartment for storing an umbrella inside the driver’s door.

Technology

Choose an Mk3 edition and you’ll get DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity as standard, but you’ll need to choose the mid-level SE for a more sophisticated infotainment system complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Most Mk4 models, however, are equipped with a minimum 6.5-inch touchscreen with DAB radio, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto as standard. Opt for the SE L trim and above for an Amundsen 9.2-inch display with large on-screen tiles that make the system intuitive to use.

Safety

In both the 2014 and 2021 Euro NCAP tests, the Škoda Fabia achieved a maximum five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, with Mk4 models scoring 85% for adult and 81% for child occupant protection. Standard safety features on the latest editions include multiple airbags and lane assist, which detects unintended lane departure and guides you back between the lines. There’s also Front Assist to help you avoid potential collisions and e-Call+, which can establish contact with the emergency services on your behalf when a major accident has been detected.

In addition to the Škoda Fabia’s comprehensive safety kit, convenience features such as rear parking sensors come as standard. These help to make parking and manoeuvring simpler and safer. Step up to the SE L trim and above to add cruise control for effortless motorway driving.

Trims available on the Škoda Fabia

In its third generation, the Škoda Fabia offered both hatchback and estate body styles, each of which came in a range of trims. In the estate, the entry-level S was followed by the SE and SE L, while the hatchback trims were named S, SE and Elegance (which later became SE L). There’s also a Monte Carlo edition of the Mk3.

The Mk4 only comes as a hatchback, and when it first launched, the entry-level trim was the S. This was discontinued, but used versions are available. It features LED headlights, manual air conditioning and a 6.5-inch infotainment system. The other trims available are as follows:

Škoda Fabia SE Comfort

Now the entry-level option, the SE Comfort boasts 15-inch Rotare alloy wheels, LED headlights, a leather multi-function steering wheel, rear parking sensors and air conditioning. It also includes Front Assist, Lane Assist and e-Call+ as standard.

Škoda Fabia SE L

Step up to the SE L and you’ll drive on 16-inch silver Proxima alloy wheels, which complement this grade’s chrome window surrounds. Chrome also appears in the cabin, edging the air vents, while comfort seats and microsuede grey trim lend a premium feel to the interior. An Amundsen infotainment system with 9.2-inch display and navigation provides crystal clear audio and reliable directions, while dual-zone air conditioning keeps you at a comfortable temperature and cruise control makes motorway driving a breeze.

Škoda Fabia Colour Edition

This exciting trim features 16-inch Proxima Black Metallic painted alloy wheels, contrasting-colour roof and door mirrors, privacy glass and a rear spoiler. Inside, you’ll find a two-spoke leather multi-function steering wheel and the Virtual Cockpit, which provides at-a-glance driving data on a 10.25-inch digital screen. Colour Edition trims also have KESSY keyless engine start/stop.

Škoda Fabia Monte Carlo

This top-tier trim comes with a host of desirable features, including 17-inch Procyon alloy wheels and grade-specific badging. It’s the sportiest of all regular Fabia models, hence the inclusion of sports bumpers, front sports seats, a three-spoke sports leather steering wheel, aluminium pedals and several carbon fibre-effect touches.
