White Hyundai IONIQ 5 from the front

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is a stylish electric family hatchback that stands out on the road. It has a spacious cabin with plenty of on-board features. The IONIQ 5 is equipped with a quick-charging electric powertrain.

The IONIQ 5 competes against other electric cars in its class including the Nissan Ariya, ŠKODA Enyaq iV, Toyota bZ4X and the Volkswagen ID.4. In recognition of its performance and good value for money, the IONIQ 5 won Auto Express’s Car of the Year in 2021.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 updates and facelifts

White Hyundai IONIQ 5 from the front

Based on the IONIQ model, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 was launched in 2021 with two battery sizes: a 58kWh unit and a 73kWh unit. In 2022, a larger 77.4kWh unit replaced the 73kWh unit that improved the Hyundai IONIQ 5’s range.

Practicality and style of the car

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 has a 527-litre boot. This can easily be expanded to 1,587 litres by folding down the rear seats. This creates a good space to carry suitcases and other items of luggage. In terms of its competitors, the IONIQ offers more boot space than the Nissan Ariya’s 466-litre boot, the Toyota bZ4X’s 452-litre boot as well as even the non-electric Volkswagen Golf’s 380-litre boot.

Since there is no engine under the bonnet, this means there’s an extra 57 litres of storage space in the front of the vehicle. This is useful for storing any extra luggage that you can’t squeeze into the boot or to neatly store away the charging cable.

The boot also features a retractable load cover to keep the boot contents out of sight. The rear bench can also be slid forward or backward to free up some more space in the back – perfect for fitting any awkwardly shaped items into the boot.

A large flat loading bay is created by folding down all the rear seats. This makes transporting large and bulky items easy. For larger items, the IONIQ 5 can tow up to 1,600kg with the 77kWh battery model, which is enough to tow a trailer.

Running costs

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 falls into insurance groups 29 to 40 but benefits from exemption from road tax due to its all-electric powertrain. In comparison, both the Toyota bZ4X and Nissan Ariya fall into higher brackets than the IONIQ 5. The Toyota bZ4X, in groups 35 to 40, and Nissan Ariya, in groups 30 to 44.

The entry-level 125kW powertrain on the IONIQ 5 consists of a 58kWh battery that is paired with a motor to put down a combined 167bhp and 350Nm of torque. This has a range of up to 240 miles before needing to be recharged and achieves 0 to 62mph in 8.2 seconds.

Next is a 225kW powertrain that comes with a 73kWh battery which puts down a combined 300bhp and 605Nm of torque. This achieves 0 to 62mph in 5 seconds and has a range of up to 286 miles before needing to be recharged. This powertrain also comes with all-wheel drive.

There is a 160kW powertrain with a 77kWh battery that can put down a combined 213bhp and 350Nm of torque. This version has a range of up to 300 miles before needing to be recharged and achieves 0 to 62mph in 7.2 seconds.

There is also a 168kW powertrain that uses a 77kWh battery and puts down 224bhp and a combined 350Nm of torque. This achieves 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds and has a range of 315 miles before needing to be recharged.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 interior front seats, centre console and cupholders, dashboard, infotainment screen displaying satnav map and steering wheel

The IONIQ 5 features a stylish and minimalist interior design that is finished with high-quality materials. The clutter-free dashboard is intuitive to use and helps make the interior feel spacious.

The 12.3-inch infotainment screen is located on a long panel that floats above the dashboard. This panel also houses the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The infotainment screen has clear graphics and an intuitive menu layout that makes it easy to use on the go. This is all controlled via the touchscreen interface or on the controls located on the steering wheel. The system includes a DAB radio, integrated sat nav, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. This allows drivers to access their personal music libraries and contacts for in-car entertainment and hands-free calling.

Located below this panel are the controls for the dual-zone climate control. These are located on a small panel which makes up the minimalist centre console.

The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is located next to the infotainment system. This displays traditional dials digitally as well as other information such as battery level, current range and sat nav directions. This screen can also display a video feed from the blind spot monitors as well as notify you of any other changes made to the vehicle. This can also come with a head-up display, which projects important information on a small transparent screen in front of the driver so they can keep their eyes on the road.

In the front, there is a large glovebox, a large cubby located behind a pair of cupholders and another cubby located beneath the centre console. In the rear, there are a pair of storage nets located on the back of the front seats that can be used to stow away entertainment devices.
