White MG4 from the front

A small electric car that proves zero-emissions motoring can be fun, the MG4 EV offers performance and practicality to rival some of the bigger names in motoring. Launched in September 2022, it represented a new direction for the manufacturer. The MG4 EV is underpinned by cutting-edge battery architecture and a rear-wheel drive platform that allows for optimal weight distribution.

This eco-friendly hatchback rivals not only compact options like the Renault Megane E-Tech, Volkswagen ID. 3 and the CUPRA Born, but also larger models such as the Kia eNiro. Upon the model’s release, there were two battery sizes to choose from, with a third added later. Trim levels include the SE and Trophy. The latter comes with an extended range of optional extras.

MG4 EV updates and facelifts

The MG4 EV was quickly identified as a standout model, winning nine awards by the close of 2022. Three of these – including Best Value Electric Car and Car of the Year – came from EV experts DrivingElectric. The hatchback was also named Best EV under £40,000 at the Scottish Car of the Year Awards 2023. Those looking for eco-friendly motoring that doesn’t compromise on safety, driving experience or style should certainly add the MG4 EV to their shortlist.

A hot hatch edition – the MG4 EV XPower – was released in 2023. Boasting a dual-motor setup and all-wheel drive, this powerful vehicle produces 429bhp and can reach 62mph from a standstill in just 3.8 seconds. This makes it unchallenged by any other electric hot hatch on the market.

Practicality and style of the car

Step inside the MG4 EV and you’ll find a relatively high driving position for a hatchback thanks to the battery being mounted under the floor. You’ll enjoy a good, clear view of the road ahead. Despite the sweeping roofline, headroom is generous, meaning everyone can travel comfortably.

The MG4 EV is also a practical option for day-to-day travel. With a boot capacity of 363 cubic litres, its luggage space is similar to the Ford Focus (375 litres) and larger than that of the Hyundai Kona EV which has 332 litres of space. There’s a handy cubby under the boot floor, which is ideal for storing EV charging cables. With a wide opening and no lip, the boot is easy to load and unload, even if you have bulky or heavy items to transport. Fold the 60/40 split rear seats down and the cargo space extends to 1,177 litres.

When it comes to towing, the MG4 EV can pull a maximum braked capacity of 500kg. That’s plenty if you plan to bring a small camping trailer along with you for a weekend away.

Running costs

A key part of the MG4 EV’s appeal is its low running costs. Unlike many EVs, which find themselves in higher insurance groups, this hatchback occupies groups 27–33 out of 50. It’s similar to vehicles like the Volkswagen ID.3, which sits in groups 25 to 27. Being an all-electric vehicle, the MG4 EV is exempt from road tax and incurs no fees in congestion zones and ULEZ zones.

Drivers can choose from three powertrain options. First in the lineup is the Standard Range version – a 51kWh battery paired with a 168bhp motor and producing 250Nm of torque. As a smaller battery, it’s lightweight and takes you from 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds.

The more powerful Long Range iteration teams a 64kWh battery with a 200bhp motor and also develops 250Nm of torque. Its larger size means its 0-62mph time is marginally more than the 51kWh variant, taking 7.9 seconds. At the top of the range is a 77kWh Extended Range battery with a motor producing 242bhp. This can rival several popular hot hatchbacks with its 0-62mph time of 6.5 seconds.

The MG4 EV XPower also features a 77kWh battery, which in combination with a 429bhp dual motor setup can get from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds. That’s quicker than the Mercedes-Benz AMG A45 S. The model has all-wheel drive capability for optimal on-road stability and can cover up to 239 miles on a single charge.

Range for the 51kWh Standard variant reaches 218 miles, and the 64kWh Long Range offers 270–281 miles on a single charge depending on whether you choose the SE or Trophy trim. The 77kWh Extended Range battery delivers the highest range, reaching up to 323 miles before needing a recharge.

Charging the 51kWh battery at home with a 7.4kW wallbox takes approximately eight hours. Opt for the 64kWh variant and it’ll take ten hours. Plug any MG4 EV into a 150kW rapid charger and a 10–80% top-up will take less than 40 minutes.

Features you can expect in an MG4 EV

Interior

MG4 interior front seats, centre console and gear selector, dashboard, infotainment screen and steering wheel

The MG4 EV offers lots of useful storage space throughout. The cubby between the front seats can accommodate snacks or trinkets, and there’s a tray for smartphones beneath the infotainment system. The front doors also have large bins and a pair of cup holders sits underneath the smartphone tray.

The cabin itself has a minimalist feel. A neat digital instrument cluster is easily visible behind the squared-off multi-function steering wheel. Audio, phone, navigation and settings are operated via the floating infotainment system. This sits high up on the dashboard, meaning the driver can keep their eyes up and on the road while operating it. Below, there are a set of physical buttons for the air conditioning, heated windscreen and more.

Technology

The infotainment system itself is controlled by a 10.25-inch touchscreen. This high-resolution display has sharp, clear graphics and shortcuts for key features. Included as standard are DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. To access smartphone integration, you’ll need to plug your device in via the USB port. Opt for the Trophy trim for a navigation system that includes live services such as weather, live traffic and Amazon Music.

A wide range of driver assistance tech is also featured as standard on the MG4 EV. Every variant has rear parking sensors for easier reversing and manoeuvring. Adaptive cruise control not only maintains your chosen speed but will also keep the car a preset distance from the vehicle in front. As such, the MG4 EV can slow and speed up without your input and according to the traffic conditions. At night you’ll be assisted by intelligent high-beam assist. This switches the headlights between dipped and full to deliver maximum visibility without dazzling oncoming drivers.

Safety

The MG4 EV was tested by Euro NCAP in 2022 and received a full five-star rating with scores of 83% and 80% respectively for adult and child occupant protection. Parents will be able to fit car seats with ease thanks to ISOFIX mounting points on the outer back seats.

The vehicle is equipped with plenty of measures to ensure everyone aboard remains safe. As standard there’s active emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, identifying potential collision risks and helping you to avoid them. Lane keep assist stops you from drifting off course on the motorway, and traffic sign recognition displays the current speed limit on the instrument cluster for added convenience.

For those who want extra peace of mind, the Long Range edition with the 64kW battery comes with blind spot detection, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert. The latter technology alerts you to vehicles approaching from your left or right as you reverse out of spaces.

Trims available on the MG4 EV

MG4 EV SE

The entry-level MG4 EV comes well-equipped, offering a range of styling and tech features. In addition to 17-inch alloy wheels, the exterior boasts LED head and taillights and electrically adjustable mirrors. Inside are a leather steering wheel and black fabric upholstery, a 10.25-inch infotainment system with DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You’ll get climate control and rear parking sensors. Driver assistance and safety measures include adaptive cruise control, active emergency braking, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition and a driver fatigue monitor.

MG4 EV Trophy

The top-spec Trophy improves the MG4 EV’s infotainment offering with a six-speaker audio system and navigation with live services including weather, live traffic and Amazon Music. There’s a 360-degree camera and a wireless smartphone charger. Interior highlights include black faux leather upholstery and electric driver’s seat adjustment. The front seats and steering wheel are also heated. Added driver-assistance and safety tech includes a blind spot monitor, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert.
