The MINI Convertible is a premium convertible, which was first released in 2005. Offering a premium interior, efficient engines and distinctive styling, the MINI Convertible is one of the enduring models in the convertible vehicle class. It is available in three versions – Cooper, Cooper S and John Cooper Works – with the Cooper and Cooper S available in three trims: Classic, Sport and Exclusive.

The MINI Convertible comes with a fully automatic roof which can partly open while driving to form a sunroof. This, and its design inspiration from the original MINI, help it stand out as a desirable model in the marketplace. Through its great practicality and performance, the MINI Convertible is equally well-suited to city driving, cross-country or motorway adventures and trips with the family.

The MINI Convertible’s compact and stylish design makes it a competitor to similar convertibles, like the Fiat 500C, Mazda MX-5 and Volkswagen T-Roc Convertible. The MINI Convertible has also won Auto Express’ Convertible of the Year for consecutive years since 2018, marking it out as a class leader in this segment.

MINI Convertible updates and facelifts

The MINI Convertible was first launched in 2005 with a fully automatic roof and a drop-down tailgate reminiscent of the classic MINI. The roof was made from soft fabric, making it well-suited to summer drives, and boasted signature headlights and exterior design.

The second generation of the MINI Convertible launched in 2009, adding subtle changes to the exterior, including chrome-rimmed headlights and revised body panels.

The MINI Convertible Mk3 was released in 2016. It introduced further exterior enhancements, including new headlights and chrome rings, a new hexagonal front grille and a longer wheelbase. A new touchscreen infotainment system was added along with a refreshed choice of petrol and diesel engines.

The Mk3 received a mid-life facelift in 2018, adding LED head and taillights, new alloy wheels and puddle lighting. It received another light facelift in 2021, which introduced a new colour and some internal style tweaks too.

An all-electric MINI Convertible was unveiled in 2022, with only 999 entering production – 150 of which were available in the UK. This model borrows much of the same styling and design, adding an electric motor to power the car.

Practicality and style of the car

The MINI Convertible has grown in size since its first iteration. The model has a length of 3876mm, a width of 1727mm and a height of 1,415mm. This makes it 305mm longer and 100mm taller than the Fiat 500C.

The extra length given to the MINI Convertible Mk3 means it has plenty of useful storage space, including 215 litres in the boot – more than the Fiat 500C’s 182 litres and Mazda MX-5’s 130 litres. With the roof stowed, the MINI Convertible’s boot offers 160 litres of space. Thanks to its split 50:50 rear seats, you can increase boot space to 433 litres in three-seater configuration or fold down both rear seats to expand the luggage space to a full 661 litres in two-seater mode.

On the road, you’ll find plenty of comfort in the front two seats, with the rear passenger seats better suited to children. There’s reasonable head and legroom to be found as well, which helps you stay comfortable on longer distances.

Running costs

The MINI Convertible’s running costs are reasonable, with its insurance group ranging from 16 to 33, which is typical when compared to the Mazda MX-5’s range of 23 to 31. Its annual road tax runs to a maximum of £180 a year – less than the Mazda MX-5’s maximum of £320.

How a used MINI Convertible drives

The MINI Convertible comes with a choice of three petrol engines, all of which can be paired to a six-speed manual gearbox or a dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic option.

The entry-level petrol engine features as standard on the Cooper model. It is a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine which generates 134bhp and produces 220Nm of torque. This power means it can go from 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds. It offers a fuel efficiency of between 49.6 and 57.6mpg.

The mid-level option is available on the Cooper S. It is a four-cylinder, 2.0-litre option. It generates 176bhp, accelerates from 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds and returns between 40.9 and 47.1mpg.

The flagship engine is available on the John Cooper Works iteration of the MINI Convertible. It has 228bhp and accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds. It returns 46.3mpg.

The MINI Electric Convertible uses a 181bhp electric motor to power the wheels. It produces 269Nm of torque and goes from 0-26mph in 8.2 seconds.

Features you can expect in a MINI Convertible

interior

The MINI Convertible has a comfortable and hard-wearing feel, with a leather-trimmed steering wheel. In the driving seat, you’ll the fabric upholstery offers plenty of support and comfort.

Reflecting the MINI Convertible’s close-to-the-ground style, you have a low seating position which helps you feel closely connected to the road. The multifunction steering wheel has a group of soft-touch buttons which help you engage the car’s infotainment and digital instrument cluster. And for welcome styling, there are piano black keys on the centre console and silver chrome strips across the dashboard.

If specified originally, the MINI Convertible can come with a digital instrument cluster. It shows key information about your drive, such as speed, distance driven, mileage, remaining fuel level and revs.

The MINI Convertible’s cabin has a good variety of cubbies and storage options to keep the interior tidy. There is a glovebox which can hold small handheld items and a narrow slot on the centre console. There are also door bins and cubbies in the rear, as well as a cup holder.

Technology

There’s plenty of technology onboard that helps keep you safe and aids your driving. There’s electro-mechanical steering with a speed-dependent steering assist, LED head and rear lights and a cruise control system with brake functionality. You’ll also have weather and light sensors which automatically turn on your wipers and headlights based on changing conditions.

The infotainment system is managed through an 8.8-inch infotainment system on the centre console. It comes with an in-built sat nav, Bluetooth as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It is based on BMW’s intuitive iDrive system, making the menus and features easy to use and navigate. There’s also a backlit ring that runs around this screen which adds to the premium cabin feel.

You can also connect to your car using the MINI app. This app allows you to remotely lock and unlock your car, change the air conditioning functions before you start driving and pre-programme your driving route in advance.

Safety

The MINI Convertible has never been tested by crash safety experts, Euro NCAP. However, it borrows much of its design inspiration from the MINI Hatchback which was last tested in 2014. It achieved a four-star rating, with an adult safety score of 79% and child safety score of 73%.

Among its safety features, you’ll have two ISOFIX safety points in the rear outer seats and deployable roll hoops that protect passengers if the car rolls. There are also front and side airbags and electronic stability control which improves your traction as you handle corners.

Trims available on the MINI Convertible

MINI Convertible Classic

On the Cooper body, the Classic trim is available with a Melting Silver body paint with matching mirror caps, and 15-inch alloy wheels. Inside, you’ll find a sport leather steering wheel with a piano black interior trim. You’ll also have cloth seat upholstery. In the Cooper S version, you will have 16-inch alloy wheels, a Walknappa steering wheel and cloth sport seats. There’s also an 8.8-inch infotainment touchscreen.

MINI Convertible Sport

The Sport trim comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, black roof and mirror caps, a roof spoiler and a piano black exterior. Inside, you’ll find Dinamica and cloth upholstery, Anthracite headlining, a Walknappa steering wheel and rear park distance control. You’ll also find adaptive suspension, Bluetooth and rear parking distance control.

MINI Convertible Exclusive

This trim comes with either 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels, leather sports seats and an aluminium interior trim. For added styling, you’ll also find signature MINI badges across the interior and exterior and floor mat badging.

MINI Convertible Resolute Edition

The Resolute Edition is a limited edition of the MINI Convertible. It comes with 18-inch Pulse alloy wheels, black mirror caps, and a Rebel Green and Resolute Bronze exterior paint. Inside, there’s signature Resolute Edition door sills, signature interior trimming and chequered upholstery.
